Sucks you've had these issues with SJC. I've been playing them for about 5 years and never had an issue. Maybe its because I haven't gone the custom route, but either way I love them. But they're not for everyone, and there are plenty of options out there!

I have a cheap Tama 8x14 stainless steel that stays in tune. $ 130 on Amazon. I'd be super pissed if i shelled out all that money and it went out of tune in 5 minutes. Ive had 8 snare drums from different manufactures over the last 35 years and not 1 required lug locks.

Just get an LM402 or 400 and call it a day. You shouldn't be stressing over a snare like this. Why do people mess around with another other type of snare? The snare was perfected in the 1960's with LM400 series and there's no reason to ever get anything else.

I got a black grip tape 6x10 side snare from SJC, and I guess I got lucky, because I’ve had it for over two years now and have yet to see any problem. But it’s a side snare, never had an SJC regular or custom snare, I have my DW Collector’s as my snare and won’t ever change snares. Thought about getting the Jay Weinberg snare, and decided against it, looks great but I have no need for 48 damn plies. I’m really sorry about your snare man, it’s a shame that SJC is like this with their shells/hardware.

I just spent £7700 on a 4pc custom kit from SJC. I hope they turn out to be fantastic.

i've got 50 dollar snares that don't do that. my one off tone custom drums snare doesn't do that. watched both your videos on this and i agree completely. SJC should feel responsible for anything that leaves their shop, whether it's a production line snare or a 1500 dollar custom job. it's called a warranty. hey your lugs are slipping and the drum is going out of tune in a quick hurry? here's a new set of longer rods, lets see if that helps. still doing it, how about new hoops? still doing it, lets try you shipping it back to us and we replace the lugs, and make sure this doesn't happen to you again. that's what a stand up company would do. shouldn't matter where you live or what plague the world is having. took them almost a year to get the drum to you and you play for 2 minutes and it's essentially broken? bad form SJC.

Omg I thought it was a broken snare or something. Well if is that the biggest problem with this drums then they are still the best in this price range. Buy some dw for 2000$ and your problem will be solved.. or not.

The thing with SJC, is that the only thing special about them is their finishing department. I'm not going to dish hate out on them, because I met Mike and Zach once, and they were nice guys and incredibly fun to talk to, so I don't feel like they deserve hate, but their drums don't exactly give me the "wow" factor. Their drums do sound good, but so does every other drum kit made with Keller/Nordic shells. I mean, you could get a snare/kit from INDe, or WFLIII, and get the same incredible sound as SJC or Truth, for considerably less money, since they all source their shells from the same place. Except you'll probably get more resonance from INDe or WFLIII, since they utilize thinner shells and lower-profile hardware. What I will give SJC though, is that they're geniuses when it comes to creating off-the-wall finishes and designs, and that the family vibe they have going on with their customers and artists alike, is admirable. Not to mention they're obviously great at marketing. I just wish they'd venture more into the R&D world and create something revolutionary, rather than hop onto trendy stuff as much as they do. But nonetheless, the snare in the video looks awesome

I was the social media manager after your situation and stuff like this happened with other drummers more than you think. My friend got a brand new custom snare and the throw off snapped right off when he got it. Same thing for the overseas made drums like the Alpha series. I no longer work for them for my own reasons, but I too could not support them after learning about how they handle certain situations.

Sjc always gave me the same vibe as ocdp…use other cheap drum shells made by bad drum builders, throw their badges on it and sell it to people. The og classic drum companies are classic for a reason, Ludwig, Sonor, Tama, pearl, Gretsch and now Mapex are all great companies

I feel your pain , I ordered the Jay Weinberg snare , it came with the bottom head busted , lugs rattling in the box , someone didn’t realize how heavy it was obviously dropped it during shipping. 1700 bucks down the drain . I got new drum head from Sweetwater but I had to put it on , I’m not a pro tunner so I’m sure it sounds horrible, those snares aren’t selling well now , a year later , I jumped the gun thinking I was getting something special, yea right

I've used SJC for years and this guy just bought at a bad time and lived in a location that is hard to get to, sjc also handmakes there drums with a tram of around 15 people and when there are alot of people contacting them for drums it's gonna be a while because it's a first come first serve order

So surprised SJC didn't immediately apologize and ask for the drum back to fix the issue or at least put the lug locks on for you. Crazy shit man. All my NEW Yamaha drums/snares have never detuned, ever. Sad...

A tension rod lock that THREADS to the tension rod from the bottom of the rim sounds like it would work for you. There's a guy in my state that makes his own locks and he can be contacted through Instagram. I can DM you his info. The problem you're dealing with is more than likely the threaded inserts I'm the lungs are not within the specs needed to work with the tension rods. Threaded inserts can cost very little but you need to buy quality inserts. I suggest buying them from Tama, DW or Pearl. Gibraltar might also be an option since DW now owns Gibraltar.
