Episode 229: Guillermo Del Toro (feat. Chloe Waryan)
The spooky season is here! Why not indulge in the twisted fantasy worlds of one renowned, revered Mexican filmmaker by the name of Guillermo Del Toro! Of course I needed to enlist a super fan of his and I was lucky enough to have returning guest Chloe Waryan back on the show for another truly delightful discussion.
Chloe may very well be my go-to guest every October (well at least for next year so we can finally talk about Mike Flanagan). Not to mention, you're in for a surprise when Chloe and I introduce a bonus segment after the movie reviews that I know you'll enjoy!
We start out the first ten minutes with some recent horror discoveries from Chloe and a quick review of a documentary I got to catch at the Chicago International Film Festival. For more reviews from there, do check out my Substack linked below! Before Thanksgiving, you'll be treated to a brand new Michael Mann redux episode so stay tuned for that. Thank you so much to Chloe for coming back on and to you for listening.
00:00 - 11:34 - Introduction / Recent Horror Recs 11:35 - 42:05 - Cronos, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone 42:06 - 01:02:47 - Blade II, Hellboys, Pacific Rim 01:02:48 - 01:24:29 - Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak 01:24:30 - 01:49:49 - Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley, Pinocchio 01:49:50 - 02:11:21 - Surprise Segment / Top 3 / Outro

Episode 228: Jeremy Saulnier (feat. Mitchell Beaupre)
Переглядів 13Місяць тому
It's been six weeks since a new episode of the show but this will be worth the wait, given not only the director we're covering but the guest is one of the best film critics working today. Letterboxd's very own Mitchell Beaupre returns after his debut a couple years ago for a nail-biting discussion on one of our premiere action-thriller directors working today. Jeremy Saulnier has a terrific ne...

In high school, I think I may have been a little too obsessed with Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2 to where I did camera shots like these?

Bonus Episode: Longlegs & In a Violent Nature (feat. Patrick Ripoll)
Переглядів 183 місяці тому
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on! Patrick Ripoll (of 96 Greers) joins me once again, returning to discuss two horror films that left me a bit perplexed. About six years ago, I asked Patrick to come back on to review David Gordon Green's Halloween along with the Suspiria remake simply because I wanted to hear his thoughts. Upon walking out of both Longlegs and In a Violent Nature, I had that sa...
Episode 226: Christopher Nolan Part II (feat. Erik Childress)
Переглядів 64 місяці тому
Once again, the format has changed a little for an experiment. Not quite a magic trick if you will, but Erik and I hope to "incept" you with our collaborative ranking of a director's filmography (not a draft, repeat not a draft). Last time Erik Childress was on to talk Christopher Nolan, it was way back in 2011 - the very first year of this podcast. Now the time has come for a sequel especially...

Episode 221: Alain Resnais (feat. Kate Blair)
Переглядів 189 місяців тому
When I first saw Hiroshima Mon Amour, this particular director went on the long list of names I wanted to cover. Alain Resnais is an internationally acclaimed film director, associated with both the Left Bank Group and the Nouvelle Vague. His preoccupation with the themes of time, memory and history, and his dazzling exploration of cinematographic technique, made him one of France’s most distin...

Episode #24: Paris, Texas and Southland Tales
I remember seeing this in theaters with my friend and his dad back in the 80s. My friend kept telling me to tell my 7 year old sis that...well, you know. of course NO!!! lol Fun Fact: The passenger in the car in the 2nd scene is Jerzy Skolimowski, he was the Russian fellow that was interrogating Black Widow in the Avengers. The more you know!!!
This isn’t near the biggest laugh
Great conversation
What movie? This is a little scary 😢
I wanna watch this movie again. Been decades!
Harvey Korman was hilarious. "I'm a medical professional, I would never violate doctor-patient confidentiality." (Mel tells him his problem) "Hey everyone, guess who has high anxiety LOL"
Promo-SM
brought it back
It’s kinda wild that you can’t find much evidence of Wabash as a band online anymore.. griffin was doing something really special at this time, I hope they’re doing well.
The opening scene of the camera closing in and breaking the window and then slowly withdrawing set the tone for this movie.
Lol, These days at airports, security would tackle you down if you act like that! 😂 0:21
🤣😂🤣
Good review, my first idea was that Ned was staying at someone's house nearby before the first moments, Ned is not dead, not saved. He's still weeping tears mixing in cold rain outside of a door that will never open. He's there now. Forever. ❤
So nice of her brother to say so and that she took it as a compliment.
for me zardoz benefits from repeat viewings
i feel the eternals costumes hark back to ancient Egypt and the eternals view of themselves as gods. they do tell you why Friend gets aged, refusing to join the group mind in 2nd level meditation gets him declared Renegade, i think he did it knowing the penalty because if he had the entire plan about Zed would come out
one of the things about zardoz is you can read it many ways, from a critique of the british class structure, looking at the end of empire i have also seen both pro and anti feminist readings of it more recently i have seen the Eternals compared to elon musk and the like
Lol
This movie screams 1970s!!!!
Muito muito bom parabéns 😊😊❤
High Anxiety is my 2d favorite Mel Brooks movie, after Young F.
Think that’s me in the yellow hat. Good times.
Pretty sure I was there. So many good shows at The Foster home.
Memories
Wow 14 years ago. The best video on youtube is 14 years old
Oh sht 🤣
💕💕💕💕👏today is John's Bday.. maybe that's why YT recommended this to me ❤❤❤ lovely cover mates!! -R
This movie used to come on HBO every other day in the summer, when I was in elementary school.
My Mom and I was just talking about this comedic genius. I like all of his movies. 😂😂
Gotta love Mel.
How can ya not? 🙂
Yawn...
“What’s your sign?” “It’s…….unlisted”
Nah for me the funniest scene is when the bellhop brings in the ‘stinkin’ newspaper to Richard showering
I personally like the werewolf and sharp pains scene.
Like what you see?
absolutely mental, brilliant 🤣
Big fan of this movie... And yes it was highly underrated
I AGREE.
"Here's your paper! Here's your paper! Here's your paper!" "...That kid gets no tip."
Not remotely funny
No
Yes
Nice job Jim, sounds good!
The sad thing is, there are people like this in real life.
Yes, but, not that I mind, @Jabberwockybird.
🌟 P R O M O S M!!
Do you love me baby tell me loud, loud loud loud loud loud loud loud, ahhhhhh whisper sweet nothings in my ear, tell me all the things I wanna hear, do you love me baby tell me loud, loud!!
"Don't be so gauche! We're all doing it!!"😳
Is this part a parody of something from a Hitchcock movie?
Always look forward to these episodes. Happy new year, Jim.
That means so much, thank you and Happy New Year to you! Here's to another great year in film!
Wonderfully done! Kudos! What a cozy-cool place you have 😁
I found this song last year it has got to be one of my all time favorites now
Wish I was there
Wow. Very well done. Truly enjoyed the whole episode. Wishing for you to get more exposure, so more can hear your interviews. Besides YT, is this a podcast? Your voice makes it easy for the listener to like.
