The Fire Within - Brian Balmages (performed virtually by the NC All State Honors Orchestra)
Ryan E. Ellefsen, Chairperson
Video production by Nathaniel Yaffe.
Originally scheduled to be an "in-person" world premiere of a completely different work for full orchestra, the entire organization switched gears on a dime, and I wound up writing them a completely new piece specifically for this performance. The result is beyond outstanding, especially given the technical demands of the work in a virtual environment. A HUGE congratulations to all involved, from our online rehearsals all the way to the finished product. Bravi tutti!

This video was created in response to the massive feedback I received from an earlier video. This particular message is designed to be played just before or during a concert to the audience. Many musicians spend time sharing the importance of music with each other, and my hope is to create a small platform to help people share it with audience members who support music, and perhaps some audienc...
Save music in our schools

I recorded this a few days after the Atlanta Public Schools announced that they are removing elementary instrumental music from their schools. They don't get it. Maybe this video will somehow help. Even if it just helps one person, it's worth it.

My first "home-made" video outside of the studio. Just three days before Christmas, I heard this arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" in my head. Rather than leave it there, I decided to share it with everyone through my piano. Enjoy!

We just performed Forever Joyful last night. I first ran across this piece my first year of teaching orchestra at my current school. I first performed it with our Advance high school level group. Four years later we performed it with our junior high level group and they sounded great and absolutely LOVED it. You're right. Band or orchestra or any activity at school may be THE reason school is bearable. The place where they feel safe and cared for. It's a place that makes them feel confident and courageous because their director got excited and exclaimed, "YES!!" that one time they got that really hard lick down. That set off a reaction in their brain that cannot be turned off. I just got a text from a band student of mine from 1994 reminded me of the time we talked about the 6P's. Proper Prior Prep Prevents Poor Performance. My elementary band director wrote that on my Straight System Snare method book...which I still have. She texted me because she taught the 6p's to her daughter, who is now a band director, and said her daughter gave her band kids the same 6P's talk. That's four generations of band kids who have now shared that talk. It made me feel all warm inside knowing that this students from almost 30 years ago credited me for teaching her the 6P's and that she was so moved by her daughter using it that she had to track me down to tell me. Pretty cool. Good video!!!

5 years later, it hasn't gotten better. Due to the pandemic, some of the hardest hit are people who work in the arts and entertainment industry. And you're not wrong, I am one of those students who looks forward to band class every day. If the school took it out, it would devastate the around 200 kids who are in the band program. Also, I very much enjoy your pieces. Raging Machines, Among the Clouds, and Elements are some of my favorite pieces composed by you.

This energetic and energizing composition is riveting to hear, and the excellent performance under such demanding circumstances deserves great respect. The composition itself is a fine addition to the repertoire for string orchestra. Brian Bslmages, always amazing under pressure, perhaps a second and a third movement in your spare time? Seriously, I would love to hear more. Thanks for this delightful listening experience.

Mr. Balmages, I want to thank you for this video. Music is one of the most important things that people can discover, and keep discovering over time, gaining new tastes and feelings for music. My oldest brother joined band a long time ago. I followed. I became a clarinetist, a conductor, and more recently, a composer of shorter pieces. It was a journey that I enjoy embarking on every day. My UA-cam channel is dedicated to my biggest passion right now, which is conducting, and showing people that they can express to the world that they can do anything that their hearts desire. A long time ago, I learned how to conduct your piece entitled "Evocatio", and as ominous of a piece as it is, it was one of the hardest for me to learn how to conduct. My high school's symphonic band played it years ago, and I was drawn to it, to add it to my conducting repertoire. I was inspired by my former band director back in middle school, and I have made a lot of progress over time. It shows that in me. So again, thank you, Mr. Balmages, for this inspirational video. Music is one of the only things on Earth that will never die down. It keeps going because of the people who enjoy it, make it happen, conduct it at concert performances, and keep it as alive as it ever was. Thank you.

Brian: "if I was happy, I'd probably try something like..." Also Brian: *instantly churns out a 5 second impromptu masterpiece* The longer piece you played made me feel like I was in a field of flowers and grass somewhere in the Czech Republic with somebody I love on a soft spring day, but that we could both feel the love fading away from between us and into the landscape. I think the diminishing love aspect of how I felt was caused by the recurring downward sequences of notes.
