2024 on (and unfortunately off) the bike
All things considered, I had an amazing biking year! Just under 400,000ft of descending. Fell off in feb, broke my wrist and couldnt ride for over a month. Then did some gravel until it could cope with mtb again,

Top section of the risca trails were the best, fun and fast! I really like the way Wales seems to have lots of smaller trail drops that Scotish trails don't seem to have. When you cross the road they got narrower and more blind due to the vegetation so wern't quite as good. Its a steep push back up so i only did the lower sections of two of the trails. 0:00 Turns in the Ferns 1:20 Busy Lizzie 4...

Wanted to try the high pivot back home after riding the ebike version in Canada. Realy liked it again, its so smooth and silent when going downhill. It still pops off jumps and trail features etc, not quite as easily as my Patrol, but its much plusher feeling for it. Hard to know if I want to change, the price is offputting as its more than my Patrol cost in 2018, but has all lower spec parts 6...

I love my Patrol so have been very keen to try a Relay. Unfortunately, it wasn't what i'd hoped, especialy after riding a Trek Slash a few days earlier. I usually do over 5000ft climbing in a day on my Patrol, so 5000ft out of the Relay is effectievly useless for me and the #1 reason i wouldn't buy it - it would actually reduce the amount of trails i could get in!! yes, its still very good. I use dLOG - M. but the importnat settings are Exposure and ISO page on auto: but limit between 1/400-1/8000 (I use 1/200 as a low setting in Dark scotish winter trails, everything else 1/400. This stops the microblur on hits) ISO - 100-3200 (100-6400 if winter and very dark, but more noise) Sharpness -2 and Noise reduction -2 (Noise -2 is important to stop the ghosting effect)

    I just picked up the same back a few weeks ago, Slash + 9.7. I have a full power Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay; I was able to demo the Slash+ for a weekend from my LBS and it blew me away. Sure the motor is not as powerful as the RM, but it didnt need to be, it felt more like a regular bike, with a bit extra. Being lighter helped negate the lower power. The big thing that sold me on this was how playful it is, I am guess that is the combo of the Mullet design with the high pivot, slow speed handles great, high speed handles great. Feels smooth in the chunk just like it feels smooth in the flow. The suspension is overkill for much of my riding but great to have when the big chunk comes up. While high pivots are not the best at climbing, the motor negates that.

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M Місяць тому

      Jealous! Its a fantastic bike, and the best of the lightweight ebikes i've tried. Yes, i thought the motor was all i'd want, you can still put it in boost and its easy, just not quite as fast uphill as a full power

    Could not stop watching the entire video :) Nice flowy trails, nice controlled riding. I am puzzled with the rating of the trails. The last one, Dai Hard, aside of 3-4 noticeable step downs (aware of the GoPro Effect, those steps where big enough that you had to push not roll) the trail was flowy and mellow. Snakebite was nice, Rim Dinger and other one with some roots on landings. People can get a sense of safety and security after riding these "Red" and they would be very very surprised after visiting anything in Swiss or France labelled Red. But, it's nothing new, the same situation is with skiing. Some stuff in Austria/France which is labelled Blue is borderline dangerous for beginner skiers. Nice riding, once again!

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M 2 місяці тому

      cheers, it was a good day out! Yes, Dai Hard was a step up form the reds in terms of the large mandatory drops, the rest of the trail was very similar. I found the reds I could just ride fast without needing to worry, Dai Hard would certiainly be too much fo people who were only comfortable on the reds. Its always hard to grade trails, i think they were graded fairly accurately (I think Red in alps is actually a double black? it is in Canada anyway) wheras reds here are easier than black, equivilent to blues everywhere else.

Some of the risca stuff was good, mainly the higher sections, Abercarn area(and across the other side), I didn't record anything in the end, just didn't get on with it! I decided not to do Dyfi, purely because im rubbish at jumps, and i think it would have been a waste for me to just roll everything for 1 day. BPW definetely was the better option for me

    Do you have a problem with cold hands? If so, how do you deal with it?

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M 2 місяці тому

      yes, same with my feet. For gloves I have 100% brisker for kind of cold days, then a set of 100% Brisker waterproof for very cold days (they are even thicker and have an extra inner lining), and then I have a set of i give up massive gloves for when its beyond saving. the problem wiht them is the inner lining is almost impossible to put on if your hands are damp, so don't take them off. I've found though, its keeping the rest of yourself warm makes a big difference, proper layers and a neck buff thing. and then for my feet, i wear thin summer socks under waterproof ones (makes the waterproff ones easy to get off too!) but you need a shoe size bigger mabye.

    Great video, what fps are you using?

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M 2 місяці тому

      its 30fps The main advantage of that i see is that if you also add videos taken from your phone etc, they are at either 30 or 60fps, so the frame pacing matches. If you have some of the video at 24fps, and some at 30 - you can either render it all at 24 or 30 fps, however whichever video is at the different framerate to the render fps will have stutter due to framepacing.

I recently rented the non ebike version gen6 slash at home and tried it on less epic trails haha, it still works absoutley fine on smooth blue level trails and then obviously works really well on horrible rough sections with rear wheel catch roots.

    Review of the shop in the description. Really liked the bike. My next bike may well be a high pivot, after riding this and a deviate highlander, i love the way the high pivot rides. Range was excellent, eco matches you to 150w, so coming from a non ebiker, this feels amazing and almost doubles my speed if im climbing normally. Range in eco: i did 4500ft that day and still had over 50%left ( i did the whole descent in turbo, which included some flat out level/climb sections) Significantly better than the less than 5000ft i got out of a Transition Relay. Legs wise, i felt like id hardly done a climb! Negatives: The price vs spec, it had entry level fox rhythm suspension and shimano brakes. To be fair, they seemed to work well on the day. The non ebike gen 6 slash xt is the same price though! When did Trek get so expensive haha

For me, the relay is a 5000ft bike, the trek is a 10,000ft bike (both in eco) and you can even get a range extender for the trek. Just from feel, the TQ system is a much nicer pedal, the fazua "kicked in" more noticablely and was slightly louder.

      @@alex737M the Fazua is 120w vs TQ 99w in Eco. Fazua 430wh vs TQ 580wh. (Fazua release a 480wh same size/weight and the 210wh REX in 2025). TQ is said to derate in longer climbs with higher power output then eco, Fazuas reliability is still bad. Fazua loader then TQ…. So both systems have their merit/demerit. I prefer the Fazua if it works 😅

      Interesting, as the TQ on the slash definately matched me to a 150w max in eco(ive seen some screenshots of the app confirming this too), my mate rented a fuel exe, and the TQ only matched to 100w on that. Looks like they mabye increased the eco power on the slash to compensate for adding a bigger battery. explains why i thought it gave me similar assistance to the fazua on the relay then! The trek has a 25% larger battery, but seems to have 100% more climbing ability at the same 150W output in eco then! For me, the range on the relay would mean id constantly be worrying about the battery even using eco mode, wheras the trek, id say i would finish the day with battery left over.

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M 4 місяці тому

      No, i haven't tested that. But this trek was excellent. From what ive ridden so far, this was better than the transition relay by quite a bit. The price seems ok on this one too. The motor and battery combo on this worked really well, i'd say it would last 10,000ft climbing in eco! I'm coming from a non ebike, so the power in eco mode felt great, it matches you up to 150w in eco, which i felt was loads.

      Interesting! i was quite disapointed with the relay, but mainly the motor and battery combination seem to mean not much climbing. The ring controller thing was awful, and the LED wern't as good as the screen on the trek. I rode both in medium, the trek was longer and just felt better for me anyway. I was immediatly comfortable on it. And if you go tthe trek the TQ motor and that bigger battery should mean alot more range for you

    I had my first e-bike rental day up the Golfie last weekend. 5000+ ft on a Kenevo with range extender and still had 65% at the top of the top of Big Baw which was our last but one descent (we finished with Spanner). Not sure what I had at the top of Spanner as I had swapped my range extender with a lad that had used his. My real point is that the difference in battery use over the day was massively down to fitness. The first full fat had blown his battery by 1pm. When mine was showing 66%, the other full fat read 16%. Both these lads are of the larger size and unfit. I spent the day in eco and rode with a high cadence. What a feeling though, golf club to the bottom of the TVA in 12 minutes with a big smile on my face :) Its a shame that S2 Kenevo's have no room for a proper dropper post... Enjoy the trails, looks amazing.

    • @alex737M
      @alex737M 4 місяці тому

      yea, I used eco the whole day and would say i'm very fit, i'd do 5000ft on my own without an ebike and pass most people easily on the climb, i can quite often beat less fit people on full power ebikes up the spooky wood climb in glentress, so this bike actually would limit what i could do in a day normally!! I rented a kenevo sl a few years back and got 4800ft out of the 160wh extender alone. And the trek i rode did 4500ft in eco and didnt even use half battery. The fazua motor must not be particulary efficient, if id used the middle mode or turbo, the bike wouldnt have got very much climbing at all!

But the battery range is usless for me! Would be fine in winter when i have less time i suppose. I odnt thing the fazua system is anywhere near as good as the TQ. The controller especially though.. • @alex737M
      @alex737M 4 місяці тому

      yes, I think its youtube unfortunately, it removes alot of the quality due to the low bitrate the moment you go into trees or faster movement etc. I use resolve, ive started rendering in h265, and 30fps mp4, and the bitrate at 85000. (youtube bitrate is less than that anway its only max 45k for 4k30 which is why it goes to pixels with lots of things going on in the vid, but at least i have a good quality version on my computer)

Many of the youtube channels I watch from BC publish vids, but don't give locations for that reason. Finding this trail, amongst others in BC, is the result of 5 years of my research into the area.
