First FIRE UP after decades of sitting. Can we get this old Model A running?

Can we get this old Model A Ford engine to run? I've had this chassis kicking around for a while. The body was kept by the previous owner for a street rod project. It is now time to tear this thing apart but before we do, let's see if we can get the old girl to fire up. the last inspection sticker on the windshield was from the mid 70's and I am guessing that it hasn't ran since then. JB weld will hold for many years on that crack bud, put it inside and out
You're probably right about that but it would be a band-aid on a shotgun wound. Everything else was extremely worn or barely held together. It found a new life as yard art.
I just bought a 1936 ford 2door humpback, your video was very helpful in explaining mechanical brakes. Enjoyed the video....Ralph
Congrats on the purchase and thanks for watching.
Too bad the new owner doesn't put an engine in it then put it to work on the farm, or at least drive it around. But like you said, at least it's not going to scrap. Yes, nice Home Depot lumber!! 🤣🤣
It's pretty rough and not really worth fixing in my opinion. You can buy them running and ready to go for pretty cheap up here.
@Maine_A_S -- Cool!! They're around here on the West Coast, but not as plentiful. I've owned one in the past but sold it in lieu of other projects. Wish I hadn't sold it now.
@@ironcladranchandforge7292 Can't keep them all I guess.
PASS IT ON
I did. I mentioned that at the end.
Very cool. You do great work. Enjoyed the video. I am now a new subscriber.
Thanks.
@@Maine_A_S No problem
Mine was an early '28 AA front axle, transmission and worm drive rear axle. The frame was 3 inch heavy wall angle having a 2 cylinder Wisconsin mouted up front. Front crosmember was an oak barn beam providing a center pivot point cut and welded into an inverted V front AA axle (crop clearance). Sprockets and roller chain connected the air cooled engine to the Ford input shaft, an axe handle engaged a clutch. Came with Wheelhorse rear rims / tires up front, I made adapters to use New Holland hay binder (Farmall Cub) rims with 3 rib tread, rears are still the split rim Ford.
That sounds like quite the build. They used what they had.
Working on Model A's is the best!! What's the build date on the engine?
There wasn't anything stamped on the engine so it may have been a replacement or maybe from an industrial use.
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching.
So if this the third installment of the Doodlebug Trilogy and we use The Fast And The Furious franchise as a gauge does this make it Toyoko Drift (I never saw any of them)?😆👍
Haha. I didn't see that one. I can't compete with their special effects. We can call it the Slow and the Subdued. Or maybe All Slow and No Show.
Hi, that flywheel became lose due your are missing the 2 flywheel dowels part no.: A-6387. The dowels avoid the twist on the bolts and the bolts keep the flywheel in place the dowels catch the twist of the starter, and give rotation action the rigidity. Regards from Curaçao.
Hi. The dowel pins were there but they stayed in the flywheel when it was removed. They were a little worn so I swapped them out.
She was purring like a rat rod . Sweet !
Thanks for watching.
I needed a replacement block for a 1930 Model A coupe. I bought a used block that had been in a combine per my rebuild shop. There was no number stamped on the block as most farm equipment from Ford did not put a serial number on the blocks. Restamped the old number on the block and kept going with the rebuild. All good.
That could very well be where this one came from. Hard to say.
Great project. I’m sure you know this but for the novice… if the oil pan has sludge the area under the valve cover with be sludged up too. Must clean and make sure the oil drain back holes (3 Of them) are clear of sludge, the main bearings depend solely on these drain back holes for lubrication. It’s good practice to spin the engine over after cleaning all the sludge to make certain that the pump is pumping oil to the area and that oil is getting all the way to the back drain back hole of the engine . While the valve cover is open check valve clearances too . .015” on all valves. My 29 had negative clearance on the front and the rear exhaust valves (had to by 2 new valves as they were slightly burnt from not closing. I lapped all the valves and now she runs like a top!
Great advice. Thanks.
It runs!!! A coat of paint and she's rebuilt!😉
Rattle can rebuild.
A laser stripper would clean that up so well.
Weld The Crack Up
I can't weld cast and it really isn't worth the effort on that trans.
@Maine_A_S You can Braze it Grind a V in the crack
@@bluestreak3864 true. This rig is really better suited for yard art at this point.
love this old stuff
It's fun and fairly simple.
Nice! She's almost ready for the dirt drags!
Pretty close
check the timing using the pin at the front of the engine
That's how I do it. Also using a test light.
Get the gas tank up higher. Its a gravity feed system
It's higher than the carb so I figured it would siphon but I guess not. I'll have to rig up a taller stand fir it.
👍👍👍
Thanks
I know that engine is worn but that runs pretty good to be that worn out. That would be a good candidate for a rebuild
It seemed to get better the more it ran. It may end up being a decent runner with a little more time and tinkering.
Almost sounds like the firing order is off when it backfires.
It think it was running lean for a lot of it. A little more tinkering and a better fuel supply will probably help.
Why not just seal off each spark plug hole, one at a time ,while you crank the engine, to see if the valves are closing. I have learned from experience that it is always wise to drop the pan for a look and a de-sludging. Great video.
It seemed pretty easy to just look in each hole and watch the valves. I agree on the pan. I was hoping to avoid it but did end up dropping it. The second half of the video should be out next Saturday.
@@Maine_A_S I'm looking forward to the next episode. Sometimes they surprise you at how easily they start up, other times it is a fight to the finish
That is a Chevrolet truck hood and radiator shroud.
Thanks. I figured the hood was chevy with that style vent.
Suspension type does not matter and toe can be adjusted with a tape measure.
Some suspension types like a twin I beam to change toe at different suspension heights. I like using these over a tape measure.
Uh...what happened with the engine knock?
The flywheel was loose.
In Sweden these were called EPA-tractor
Interesting. What was the meaning behind that?
@@Maine_A_S it was meant to convert old cars to tractors, as it was a shortage of factory made tractors, banned from new licensing 1975, replaced with A-tractors which still are licensed 19 mph, EPA was started to bild in 20'ties, makeshift, replacement tractors so to say
The rear end would be a worm drive ,which,if it wàst broken has a bronze crown wheel and they do NOT use gear oil burmt a special worm drive oil which wont eat bronze .
Thanks. The rear seems to be alright but time will tell.
That is my dream truck just what dhe looks.like. mike at 77 years😅

Great job putting your content together. Your video is interesting to watch. Just subscribed. 👍👍👍
Thank you
The main reason doodlebugs were made was because it certainly was a cheap way to get a tractor during the Depression, because they could not afford to buy a tractor, and during and shortly after WW2 when you could not get new tractors easily because of the war effort.
Thanks
😎👍
Thanks for watching
You narrate well sounds a little like sleeping music
Haha. Thanks, I think.
When I was a boy back in the 50s, I had 2 neighbors that has these. they had the original hood and cab on them, but the both had 55 gal barrels on the back. The barrels were cut in half lengthwise and were placed in the bed side by side, then filled with dirt for weight. they added plows on the front and used them to plow all the neighbors driveways. This was in Fulton County, NY, back in the day when they really had snow.
That's pretty neat. I was thinking about putting a plow on this one but it's pretty rough. It would be fun to clean the driveway with.
quality says 1080, yet the video is blurreed
Pop in the 50s and 60s too! My Dad made one and I remember it very well. Looked much like this one! He had 2 transmissions in it to make a lot more pulling power for firewood for us! In VT.
My Dad was born 1919. He bought one from his neighbor that had a damaged piston. He repaired it himself & said with the two transmissions he could pull anything as long as it could get the tires to bite.
always enjoyable to see these old cars and enjines thanks

Doodlebugs are pure AMERICANA...........................if you have one don't scrap it.
They are pretty neat. I wish this one was in a little better condition.
Just found your channel! Enjoyed it! I will check back.
Thank you.
a short rescuevideo in the beginning had been nice! Now we only must belive on what you tell us.
I agree. I always enjoy watching the rescue videos also. Unfortunately it's not always possible to do one.
The reason they did that is to get gas rations,it was a way to get fuel !
I knew they converted cars into trucks for the rationing but I've never heard that about tractors. How did the rationing work for off road vehicles?
looking forward to it!
Thanks
Excellent!! Can't wait for part 2. I once owned a 1928 Ford Doodlebug that was cut down from a Model AA truck. Kind of wish I still owned it. Are you planning on keeping this Doodlebug? They're a lot of fun running around the property on, or even putting back to work.
I can see a cut down AA being better suited. The A frame seems pretty weak for doing much work with it. I'm not sure what the plan is yet. I thought it would be fun to put a plow on and clean the driveway with it but this one is pretty rough and wasn't put together very well in the first place.
Is that a tractor rear end
It's out of an old White truck.
Fun project 👍 I always save the ATF when I service my automatic transmissions to use for loosening up old stuff like your transmission. Just fill them up to the top if I have enough saved. Run it a bit and drain it. Save the dirty atf for my oil burning heater.
That's a good idea. I don't have any used stuff kicking around but I'll toss a few qts of el-cheapo ATF in it and see what happens. Thanks.
That Whites rear and original rims is impressive.
I really like the rear wheels. They are pretty crusty though.
