Welcome to the unedited video version of the Being Known Podcast!
In a world in which we experience such deep desire and such great grief, we find coursing through all of it our unquenchable longing to be known. But we don’t want to stop there, for we know in our bones and blood that we desire to be known in order for us to create and curate beauty and goodness in the world - together with our friends and, in our best moments, even our enemies - in every domain of life that we occupy.
We hope you enjoy these episodes and find that they inspire you to do the hard, beautiful work - together, with us! - of being known.
Our desire is that you won’t just receive information (which we hope will be helpful), but that you will sense in our very conversations what we are exploring with our words.
Thanks for joining Pepper Sweeney and me, along with Amy Cella - and Noah Needleman’s music - as we discover, together, what it means to be truly known.

S11E3: Unrepaired Ruptures: Trauma, Memory, and the Call to Restoration
Trauma is more than a single event-it is the accumulation of unrepaired ruptures that we carry in our bodies and souls. In this episode, we explore how these ruptures-whether from minor conflicts or deeply wounding experiences-shape our lives and relationships.
Drawing from biblical stories and contemporary examples, we discuss the ways our unresolved pain influences our decisions, interactions, and sense of self. From the silent grief of barrenness in the lives of the matriarchs to modern challenges like road rage and smartphone dependency, we examine the pervasive impact of ruptures.
With thoughtful insights, we point to the hope of repair and the courage it takes to face the cost of healing. This week, Curt and Pepper invite you to reflect on your own journey and consider how God's redemptive work transforms even the most broken parts of our stories.

Connections: Imagination to Incarnation is intended to draw us out of our straitjacketed imaginations and into an increasingly incarnate presence with others, just as God has done over the arc of the biblical narrative. We want the participants of the Conference to experience what it means to begin to move more fully into a posture of incarnation, such that their imaginations may become that mu...

Post Show Conversation for S9E6: Suffering: The Story of the Present Age
You triggered me with the parking lot conversation!! 😂 I can pull halfway out of a parking spot and someone (almost always young) will walk behind my car. I so badly want to yell, “If I’m already halfway out of a parking spot, I’ve already shoulder checked!!!” Everyone feels entitled to just go and make everyone else wait. Love your content and fun repartee!
First time listener. Thank you for your work. My goal is to work through the fear and shame and live in joy.
Could you speak to the situation where I am in long-term therapy and have had ruptures with the therapist that he and I have discussed this situation with him at length. I find that I have not forgiven him nor forgiven myself so the sensitivity that produced the rupture is still there. This process needs to include this step too. It doesn't just magically happen.
This is so helpful ❤
Do you have plans laid out for conference next year for those of us who need to plan ahead? Will it be in Fairfax? Around the same time?
I’ve been struggling with rupture and repair with my mom and sister because they have abused me my whole life. They are narcissistic and have no sense of how much they have hurt me. Zero insight into their harm they have caused me and my own family. How can repair happen in this situation when the perpetrators aren’t sorry, don’t take responsibility for their behavior??
I am so excited for this season!!! We need healing in our world and it starts in our sphere/circle of connection. This is so timely.
Challenging assignments but grateful for the challenge.
We know you can do it and would love to hear how it goes!
This was sooo good being here live! Let’s go! 🎉
Thanks for coming to the conference!
It is the kintsugi of relationships!
This is hilarious!😂
oh my gosh I just got to the part about the dad walking into the family room when someone else is upset and holy cow that is my dad to a t
This is so well done! I'm a violinist in a high school orchestra so this is such a personal episode for me!
Re-listening to this years later. It’s helping me make sense of what humility is and how it affects my relationships with God and others. The story of the rich young man came to mind (Matthew 19). The thought of making himself vulnerable caused him to have a visceral reaction. Saying he went away “sad” is a huge understatement in my mind. And I’ve been thinking about Isaiah 30:15-16. A good rewriting of it might be “In vulnerability is your salvation. In vulnerability is your strength. But we say not a chance. I’m out of here”
This concept of lossing a small thing causing us to greave other losses and traumas is great. Five Iron Frenzy is the music I listened to growing up has a song a out lossing a blue comb as a kid and how that represented the loss of his parents marriage and other childhood losses... Fun to have some psychiatrist back up for his silly songwriter style. Here's their song... m.ua-cam.com/video/W6iE83n-MdI/v-deo.html&pp=ygUdZml2ZSBpcm9uIGZyZW56eSBibHVlIGNvbWIgNzg%3D
I'm writing this and feeling some of what you all are discussing in the comments on the program afterwards, especially about "Cora" and her experience in the community. My therapist doesn't do much with body work, and it feels like a big deficit for me after hearing about what Cora has gained. Perhaps he will be more willing to be open to that as I talk with him about this podcast you have provided. For Dr. Curt: Maybe the rich young ruler you referred to is seeing Jesus talk to him and longing to respond, but just too afraid, too aware that responding will show his neediness. I've been there.
the genogram has been very helpful in unlocking this generational picture... and giving freedom... so grateful!!
I am the one in three. I am beginning the journey of healing, rewiring, reframing, finding soothing, safety, security, being seen. Thank you for this voice you have raised on our behalf. God bless you.
Thank you so much!! Information is empowering and SO helpful to understand myself better and AND know more of the details of how we are truly fearfully and wonderfully made!!! THANK YOU!!
I am watching this on November 5, 2024..... and am struck with the connections this has to the election in the USA...my home country. Thank YOU for the truth reminders!!!
Any word of the next season? Miss your wisdom and encouragement.
We finally have a date... January 22 is the release date of season 11.
@@BeingKnownPodcast Such a great gift, since today is my birthday. Blessings on your holidays😍
Thank you, Amy, for persevering!
You are so welcome! We appreciate you listening!
Miss you all!
We'll be back with new episodes beginning January 22, 2025
I too started with the first podcast since I was introduced to Dr. Thompson’s work a few days ago . A lot of what he said resonated with me. Thank you for creating this podcast.
Wow I can relate to the rigidity...being an oldest child and wanting to maintain emotional order...and in some ways I had a dad like Kurt...a big teddy bear that you didn't want to anger (even though we rarely saw that anger come out). When my dad's dad died when I was about 8, I remember a growling session he had with his brother because the hospital and Dr were incompetent in their care. I too have a lot of hidden anger and also a fear of angering people.
I found it interesting how you described how our stories change by telling them to people. How our brain changes with the telling as shame is removed.
I finally am watching all of your podcasts. My sister shared this podcast with me a few years ago now. I even signed up for the emails. Yet didn't get here till now! This is such a great set of videos that I wish to share. Thank you so much!
Thanks for listening
Wow so practical! and I am so glad that we can relate to our minds with science and relationships.
This is so good! I use this in CrossYoga's teacher training! (Christian Yoga) :-)
WOW!! That is a wonderful way to use this! Thanks for sharing.
Oh it was your birthday yesterday Curtis! Happy birthday and happy birthday to pepper 13 days ago!
Don't forget to say your wife is part of your community
I’ve just learned about Dr Thompson via some friends serving with me in Uganda. I’ve just started my journey and looking forward to learning more interpersonal neuroscience and how it will transform my heart and mind.
Ooohhh! Love you guys!! You bring light into the dark confusing places. Learning how to discover beauty in the midst helps to move onto the new track that is there waiting to be discovered. All very life giving ❤ THANK YOU
This is so helpful!❤
Listening and kept trying to figure out the word "oitposts", typo should be "outposts" in the title for the episode!
Thank you!❤
Signed up for an Enneagram webinar & after listening to Curt, a Dr talking so clearly about being ”a follower of Jesus" I had to know more. So I started at this first podcast. So much is more clear to me now as to why, I as an artist, loves the act of creating & nurturing others to create. Also, BTW, loved the intro: ”...I start on One, but you don't say One?" Hilarious
Psalm. Art and Praise at the same time.
Is that what is also known as subconscious? The implicit memory?
Until all these little griefs add up an then there is an explosion
This is AMAZING
Love your videos!!❤
What about if you learned in childhood that God is at war with you rather than you believing you are at war with God
This gives bones to “Father to the fatherless”. Psalm 68 Bones in my relationship with the trinity (and the people in my life) I’m still developing.
❤such a wonderful message. Thank you!!
Sounds amazing! Wish I could be there!
Great start to refresh our memories of all the great content that our brains have absorbed, but then leaked, because...life rolls on; Jesus know what we need and when it's needed.☺
Happy Birthday Pepper!🎉🎂 And early Happy Birthday Curt!😅😅
😂😂😂😂
That was great!
