Ep.22 Precumbens Nana Cascade Design
Переглядів 12421 день тому
Initial design and styling on a Preumbens Juniper i got in New York a couple of months ago. I didn't know which direction to go with this one. It was going to either be an informal upright or a cascade. I just couldn't decide, so I wired the main trunk and would switch between the two. Eventually, I changed the planting angle, and it just worked as a cascade.

Wiring of a Hollywood Juniper semi-cascade litterati. I start off wiring the main branches. And the detail wiring the secondary branches. I'm using heavy gauge wire to try to get some drastic bends.

Переглядів 344Місяць тому
Our neighborhood got hit pretty hard by Hurricane Helene last week. We have been without power since Friday morning, so I haven't been able to edit any videos. I've been continuing wiring getting ready for the dormant season. So here is a video of the work I have done so far. I still have two videos to edit, so as soon as I get power back, I'll be editing those and getting them uploaded.

Heya Jordan, still happy doing bonsai!? My apologies, I did not notice the shoutout before in my youtube stats! Sub +1

Doing really well Jelle. I've made a lot of progress even since this video, I hope. I'm glad I found your channel a few years ago. I've learned a lot from watching videos from you and other Bonsai channels. Hopefully it shows in my work and will continue to do so in the future.

You can twist bark to position branch and bend same time but be careful not to much, max 90deg 2" apart.

I like that you are willing to use different plants. It's all about what you like and how you design it. Keep up the bonsai!

Thanks. It probably helps that I've only been keeping bonsai for two years, so I don't stop myself from trying whatever Trees I think look cool.

This will be my first attempt at a raft. Once I cleaned out the inside of the tree, it just made sense.

That first tree I would of took that long branch off.

    • @BeardedBackyardBonsai
      @BeardedBackyardBonsai Місяць тому

It comes from down low on the right side of the trunk and wraps around the back of the tree. It is covering up for the fact that there is a little bit of inverse taper where the second branch comes off the trunk. It's about the same thickness as the main trunk so you would lose about half the thickness of the main trunk if I were to remove it.

Thank you. Over the last two years, I've made a few mistakes and killed several trees, but I've learned a lot and started figuring out how to really let the trees tell me what they want to do.

Dang it! Here is another one I want and can't find! If ya get the right one, you get a flower and a berry show! They grow like weeds, propagate super easy and will keep you busy constantly pruning. I like em!

Most of the branches I planted off of this one seem to be doing ok. Most still have some green on them.

What did ya pay green thumb for that bush? I'm having no luck getting my hands on one. :-( I figure your cuttings will make good trees about the time your beard reaches your knees! ;-p Man they grow SLOOOOOW!

Try some rice fish. They can stay in their year around, even if the surface freezes over.

    • @BeardedBackyardBonsai

The comets that I have are cold hardy, especially where I am in South Carolina. Once I get my large pond built next year, these guys are going in the larger pond, and I will probably switch this over to rice fish. The comets have already doubled in size, so they should have enough fat to survive the winter. I'm in 8a, so winters are fairly mild.
