This is the second of our Aldi Exquisite Collection review, this time featuring two reds. The first is a Pinot Noir, from Marlborough in New Zealand, available for £6.99. The second is a Shiraz from South Australia, available for £5.79. These are two cracking wines for the price, well-made and very classic of their varietals from those countries. At this value, we give them both ratings of 9 on...

Discussing Pinot Gris/Grigio, how it's a "cousin" of Pinot Noir, and tasting one from Aldi
Переглядів 2406 років тому
Pinot Gris is better known as Pinot Grigio; in New Zealand (from where this wine hails), calling it "Gris" is an attempt to position it away from mainstream and bland "Grigio". We discuss how Pinot Gris is actually a colour mutation of Pinot Noir, so be bolder than we see many Grigio examples being. We taste a good and inexpensive example from Freeman's Bay in NZ, bought in Aldi for £5.79. For ...

    Yes, wine clasification in Germany is lots of confusion. What you have shown is only a part of the unofficial VDP classification. As you mentioned you are interested in dry riesling. VDP is the obvious way to go with the GG at the top. German Law: Table wein, Landwein, Qualitätswein and Qualitätswein mit predikät. A predikät is: hoghgewachs (only at the mosel), kabinett, spätlese, auslese, beerenauslese, trockenbeerenauslese, eiswein. The predikät is not a quality level of the wine. The grapes at the time of the harvest contain more and more sucker. Dry, off dry, fruity en sweet are also no part of the quality, but just different styles/tastes. kabinett, spätlese, auslese are also in dryer styles available. So yes the confusion is complete. Your best advise: look at the alcohol level. You missed to mention some parts of the moselwine region: the Saar and Ruwer wines are Moselwines, just as the Südliche Weinmosel. The south or upper mosel is not that steep, has some chalk soil (same as Burgund/Champaigne) and has the Elbling grape (brought by the Römer) and more Burgunderstyle. Grau and Weißburgunder, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir (spätburgunder) and lovely Cremants/sekt. The wines are more affordable and less outstanding than your topquality list. Yes Riesling is amazing, you missed also: "Staffelter Hof wurde erstmals im Jahr 862, Kröv" just round the corner from Bernkastel. lots of history on the mosel. For people who want to buy wine, most winery,s have an internet shop :). Cheers

    Absolute load of tosh. Drinking wine from a different shaped glass makes no difference to the taste of the wine whatsoever.

      it does really does, have done blind taste test before on this (with various different beverages too) but NGL I wouldn't go out and buy super fancy glasses for slight differeneces, as long as it has a "aroma funneling" effect (the largest difference IMO) and allows for large enough headroom you're most of the way there to a great glass

    • @dtonpbac
      @dtonpbac 5 місяців тому

      It doesn't change the taste itself obviously but it can affect how you perceive/experience the taste. But I agree that it's only minor influences. More effective glass/shape won't magically create something new that less effective glass/shape lacks.

    Pretty sure that the taste is not affected, only the aroma...

    • @Birdylockso
      @Birdylockso Рік тому

      I was going to say the same, but it is possible that the swirling in the different glasses produces different degree of aeriation. As such, it could change the taste in the mouth. But the psychological influence cannot be discounted, for example, the smell does affect the tasting experience. A real test would be blind folding with someone holding the glasses, i.e., double-blind, and rate each according to aroma and taste.

    How does the Performance range perform vs other Riedel varietal specific glasses? For example does Pinot Noir taste different, better, worse in a Vinum Pinot stem vs a Performance Pinot stem?

    • @0xmdilly

      As far as I'm aware, they're designed to suit the style. So TECHNICALLY there shouldn't be a difference between ranges

    Hi Campbell! What glass would you recommend for Rosé? Would the Riedel Chardonnay or the riedel Riesling work better? Kind regards

    • @campbellwilliams8717
      @campbellwilliams8717 4 роки тому

      Hi Lepia. That's a great question. Of the two, I'd definitely recommend the Riesling over the Chadonnay. The Riesling one is also suitable for more fragrant wines like Gruner Veltliner and Gewurtztraminer so should suit Rose well. The Chardonnay glass suits bigger, oakier wines where the larger bowl lets more air at the wine to soften it and let it open up more. We use the Riesling as a white or rose all-rounder.
