My favourite Murray Walker line isn't actually a gaff but it is a good one. In the 1996 Monaco GP on about Lap 8 or something he told us; 'THESE are the PEOPLE who are out already!!!' As there had been about 9 retirements by this point. Only three would eventually take the chequered flag

The BTCC ones were usually pre-recorded but that allowed Murray to be even more creative with his words. He had a great talent for it - before he became a full-time motorsport commentator he worked in advertising, coming up with marketing campaigns and slogans.

There will never be another who comes close. Nobody could or would have been worthy to hold a candle to him. His depth of knowledge on all categories of motorsport and ability to engross the listener will be forever unparalleled. We were privileged to have shared his enthusiasm. It is rare for the term 'legend' to be used correctly in this day and age, yet it still falls short when describing Murray Walker.

I was lucky enough to meet Murray about 25 years ago. Absolute gent.

Is it me or the 90's BTCC cars looked safer to crash in than most of todays cars, they take big beatings in those videos sometimes and the driver gets out intact and not even stun.

The events of Imola 1994 showed his true professionalism. There are not many races, let alone sporting events in general where the death of a participant has happened but Murray bravely continued with the full race commentary before delivering us the tragic news of both Ratzenberger and Senna in the evening.

He was voted the greatest British sports commentator ever by the Daily Telegraph beating such luminaries as Peter O’Sullivan, Bill McLaren, John Motson and Harry Carpenter. Not bad for what was once considered a “niche” sport…
