Astro Blast - Dragon Data - Dragon 32 - XRoar - Space Pilot - 2,575 points.
Astro Blast is a fixed shooter arcade game for the Dragon 32. It was released by Dragon Data in the UK in 1982 or 1983. This game was originally released by Mark Data Products for the TRS-80 CoCo in 1982. Because the Dragon 32 is very similar in its hardware, it was common for CoCo software to be ported to the Dragon as well.
This game is a close copy of the 1979 arcade game Astro Fighter from Data East. Your ship at the bottom of the screen has to shoot waves of fighters that move slowly down the screen, firing as they go. If any fighters in the fleet get passed you, then the whole fleet attacks again from the top of the screen. Unfortunately you have a limited fuel supply, so you cannot afford for many of the attack waves to get by you. You do get a chance to refuel by shooting a mothership that appears after a few waves, you can then dock with it and refuel. After that you get to do it all again, but it is a bit harder.
This game is ok. It would have been better rated at the time as the graphics are not bad by the standards of the day, the game moves quite smoothly and there is some animation - such as on your exhaust. Sound is alright and so is the gameplay, though it is very samey so I am not sure how much replay value it would have had.
This run was made using the XRoar emulator running as a UK Dragon 32 (PAL). The date of play was the 22nd December 2024, the Skill Level was set at Astro Pilot (the default) and the score reached was 2,575 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen, Skill Level Astro Pilot.
00:33 Game start. The game is in black and white, but you can get a colour setting in the XRoar emulator, so you will see those versions online too. It is the same game.
00:53 First shield lost.
01:01 Second shield lost.
01:02 Wave 1 destroyed.
01:24 Wave 2 destroyed.
01:48 Third shield destroyed. Game Over! Final score 2,575.

Space Ace is a cockpit shooter written by Mike Singleton and released by Petsoft for the Commodore PET. It was written in 1982. In many ways this is similar to another PET game I played recently, Star Force, as both are cockpit-shooters but this one has some interesting play features. You have to destroy the enemy ships that move about the screen. How you do this is a little unusual. You have t...

Star Force is a cockpit-shooter for the Commodore PET. It was released in 1979 by Astar International, but the author is not recorded other than as S.M. This is believed to be Satoshi Matsuoka, who also worked on NES games with Satoru Iwata at Nintendo. The date of release means that Mr Matsuoka would have been at school at the time, which makes the quality of this game all the more impressive....

Super Glooper is a Pac-Man clone for the Commodore PET. It was released in 1981 and written by D.E. Anthony. The game features the standard formula of a maze, four ghosts, power pills and a tunnel. Interestingly, the maze is very similar to the arcade maze, just tipped on its side, so in this version the tunnels are at top and bottom, not left and right. Although the game has a good maze layout...

PET Space Invaders 2 is a game by Jim Orlando for the Commodore PET. It was released in 2022. This game is a version of the 1979 arcade game from Taito, Space Invaders Part II. Very much like the original Space Invaders, the game featured a few updates. At least one of those is featured in this PET version, where shot invaders occasionally give rise to one or two 'daughter' invaders. I didn't g...

Ski is a game by Mike Singleton for the Commodore PET. It was written in 1982. I don't believe it was commercially released, so I don't know how this was distributed - perhaps direct from the author or via one of the software libraries at the time. The game principle is very simple - get your skier down the course as quickly as possible with the minimal number of crashes. You are up against the...

Another Commodore PET game of uncertain origin, this is one is called Radler (Cyclist) and was written by Stefan Kruse. This is a weird one. It is quite pro-environmental, with the emphasis on 'mental'. In the game, you control a concrete block (the cursor like object). You have to guide this left and right to hit the cars but avoid the cyclists. I guess the aim is to make the environment a bet...

How do you switch difficulty from a to b.
In Stella, click 'Options' / 'Game Properties' / 'Console' and there should be the A and B options for Difficulty switches. Alternatively, in game, F5 and F6 change the Left Difficulty switch and F7 and F8 change the right Difficulty switch (a little box appears at the bottom when you press them to tell you what it is now set to).
Hey, i'm the author of the game and discovered your video a few minutes ago, very nice landing pal :) Thx for the review ;)
Thanks for stopping to take a look. I was exploring the Aquarius library last year and tried every game I could find. I never saw one at the time (I used the Oric) and it is very nice to see that there is still an active community for this old machine!
Ich glaube, dieses Spiel ist sehr schwer zu schaffen, weil die Pseudo-3D-Perspektive unübersichtlich ist.
Ja, die Ansicht ist schwer zu verstehen.
Lol
The "ocean currents" are a ludicrous addition to the game! 😮
I think without them the game would be too easy 🙂. And this was the 1980s - games were not fair back then! ;-)
@@tgphighscoreruns4111 oh, it absolutely would be too easy without it. But they should be less sharply variable and there should probably be some sort of visual gauge on screen to show the direction and strength. It shouldn't have to feel so much like shooting in the dark!
There's a blast from the past. I remember it's rather unique take on two player mode, where one controlled movement and the other was the gunner.
I never saw this on the Electron (or Beeb) back in the day. I did play it on the Oric however, a version which is far too easy and boring.
You seem able to shoot straight with the ctrl key, but it doesnt work for me. The only key that shoots is altcar, but it also causes the ship to turn left, making it impossible to aim at anything. This game is certainly not worth the time to try to fix, but I am a bit annoyed that I can't get a fair shake at it! (Also played on Pantheon, got 17, not bad considering I was spinning like mad!)
There is an Acorn Atom software archive you could try as well.
Lovely surprise, cute display, with a nice atmopshere.
It's a very nice Rogue-like from Rax. It's now available on itch.io as well!
I had completely forgotten about this program; thank you for bringing it back to my attention.
Well it was a long time ago! I remember the PET at school in the early 1980s, and a Lunar Lander game on it. We used to type simple BASIC programs on it as well. The school also had a BBC Micro and of course we paid a lot more attention to that, as it had better games ;-).
just discovered this game it is so much fun
I hadn't come across it until recently either. I don't remember it at all back in the 80s.
Excellent
Thanks, old magazine listings are quite interesting to explore.
I like under/water themes in video games and this one is no exception. Also way to go with ramping up that high score. I think the most played pinball video game for me was demo version of Big Race USA back on Playstation. I've gotten myself full version later on GOG, but played it only for a bit. Turns out childhood glee has a way to make even demo version more fun than the finished product, especially when it's played with friends.
Nostlagia - it just can't be beaten! I'm enjoying playing games on obscure computers that I remember in magazines in the 1980s. These machines are - shall we say - very basic and I am sure that younger people could not bear to play such games, but if you were there at the time, it brings back all that nostalgia!

I will!
Used to love this!
Never played it back in the day, only got to try it recently. Classic 3D style graphics from Software Invasion.
Nice "Pac-Man" style game!!!

How do you get all the fuel on this level? Does it even matter if you do?
I would learn the position of all the items on each track through play. Then I would recite them as I played, so I was always ready for what was around the next bend - like having a Rally Driver co-pilot. There are not a lot of items on this short track, so it is easy to learn.
@@tgphighscoreruns4111 do you get anything for getting 10 fuel on every race
@@RandyBandit34 You need to collect all coins and the required number of fuel cans to get a full rating for each track.
Oh, hey, I know this game as Circus Atari!

😳 errr...... Teenage coding catches up with me 40 years later 😂
Well, you certainly did a lot better than any of my efforts in BASIC! And I never learned any assembly or FORTH. Its hard to get across to younger generations just how magical it was to play any sort of game on a television back then. Just like reading a book, your imagination filled in the gaps that the hardware and coding could not fill! I love looking back at this time, the multiformat magazines, the machines that were all so different from each other even if they used the same processor. No 'standard' system to focus on and nobody knowing which machines would become standards, it was all very exciting in a way that I don't think can ever happen again.
Why is this so flickering?
I don't know, I've probably got something set up incorrectly.
Super cool!
Very cool looking game!
An old classic! Also available on the Amstrad CPC I believe.
Awesome!
I love it. Well made! Surely one of the best games for this old system.
Great score 😀
Thanks, I was shocked to see it was second - I'm sure people can do better than this. It was also a nice surprise to see Marco at No.1!
"You have to get your black cross-hairs into the centre of the green cross-hairs" thanks, this is what I wanted to know. I reached stage 3 but was unable to reach stage 4 until I read you.
It took me a few goes to work it out! Thankfully after playing thousands of old school games I have a fair idea how the programmers ideas work!
Why do I hear Arnold Schwarzenegger saying out loud…. Get to the Choppa!!!
I think we all hear that when we play Choplifter!
Respektabel! Ich dachte nicht, dass so ein Spiel auf der kleinen Vectrex-Konsole möglich sei.
Ja, das war eine sehr gute Arbeit!

Hi - I am playing the same game (also on Steam). However, I can't get both flippers to work at once and they are very glitchy. I've tried to reinstall. Any ideas? Thanks.
Hello, just tried running on my PC. Flippers work ok (and both together at the same time without any sign of glitches) using the left and right cursor keys and/or the left and right shift keys. I don't use a controller for this kind of game.

Now that's a addictive game, that every 'retrogamer' should play. Imade a video in my channel too (PT-BR) covering the basic, checkit out later! 🎮
Awesome play! I managed to get a 3.9B on this table several years ago; the double score is extremely OP
Great game. There were other minigames like tron or lunar lander... The fun being first having to guess what to do !
Nice one mate !!! Never played this before...
It is quite a good version.
I hope you liked the game :) One of these days I should probably tweak the duration of the jump so it follows the global acceleration of the game, because at some point it become impossible to deal with the metal beams, as you saw at your final death.
I remember that I once tried this game through the MAME emulator, but never seriously... I like the very concept of the game and the idea, and that's what is missing in the games that are made today: a good idea, concept and simplicity! To play a modern game today, it takes weeks of practice and tutorials to even get started...That's probably why I stick to classic (good old) games!!! P.S. I could not resist to try it today so I just did it!!! Wonderful game!!! Totaly something different from anything else I've tried until today!!! Brilliantly designed and perfect gameplay!!! After dozen attempts I finally got it!! The most important thing is to adjust your speed along the track, maximum speed can give you much bonus points at the end of the course but it's mrore risky!!! Also with mid-speed you can manage to jump at little green "jump platforms" and it brings you 300 points for each platform!!! So, I expect to beat my score soon cause' it' s not so hard but takes some practicising!!! Waiting for your next best score impatiently!!!!
