Tudor history as vines
Hello everyone :)
Welcome to my video celebrating the 1 year anniversary of this channel!! I wanted to do something really special to celebrate and the best I could come up with was this, so please enjoy.
ps. pls don't come for me, these vines are meant as a joke but also a lil revision so have fun!
EXPLANATIONS OF THE VINES (so this video counts as revision):
0:09 Henry VII won the English crown at the Battle of Bosworth 1485, thanks to his strong support from the French and crucial support of Lord Stanley.
0:16 Before the Battle of Bosworth, Henry VII spent 14 years exiled in France. During this time, the Wars of the Roses were raging on in England between the Lancastrians and Yorkists while Henry minded his own business in France.
0:22 Edward VI was crowned King in 1547 after Henry VIII's death. He was just a child, so England was subjected to regency rule where Edward was basically controlled by the Duke of Somerset (1547-49), and then the Duke of Northumberland (1550-53).
0:28 England was super lucky to join the Holy League in 1511, which was a group of countries who joined together because they hated France at the time.
0:35 Henry VIII always wanted to wage war since one of his principle aims was to be a glory king. However, England did not have the money for this so Henry was limited in how many wars he could start. Unlike Francis I who had plenty of money, which fed into the rivalry between the two young kings.
0:41 Pretty self-explanatory, Empson and Dudley were Henry VII's trusty men who travelled England forcibly collecting debts owed to the Crown.
0:46 Mary I was a big Catholic (born to Catherine of Aragon) and Elizabeth I was a big Protestant (born to Anne Boleyn). Elizabeth was actually imprisoned during Mary's reign (1553-58) for supposedly supporting Protestant rebellions so basically they were not two peas in a pod.
0:51 Catherine of Aragon and Prince Arthur were married in 1501, but unfortunately Arthur died in 1502. Their marriage was an advantageous alliance between Spain and England which needed to be preserved, thus Catherine was held in England until Henry VIII was old enough to marry her.
0:58 In 1549 the Duke of Somerset, in a desperate attempt to prolong his power, kidnapped young Edward VI to Windsor Castle, idk what his plans were with this one, but it didn't work. Somerset was executed in 1552.
01:04 Charles V literally controlled all of Europe, it was crazy! He was Holy Roman Emperor which is a big deal in and of itself, but he also controlled Spain, Burgandy, and the Pope?!?! Charles V was probably the most powerful man in Europe during the Tudor period, and he was Catherine of Aragon's nephew so big Catholic as well.
01:11 Henry VIII got very large towards the end of his life, and then one day in 1536 he fell off his horse. Was this the beginning of the end for him? I guess we'll never know, but according to Wikipedia the accident led to a "chronic wound" so yeah.
01:14 So imagine this: the leaders of the three most powerful European countries all die within a few years of each other, and the reins are left to their young war-obsessed sons. I imagine Henry VIII, Francis I and Charles V would be besties in modern times, but back then they were simple enemies.
01:21 Pretty self-explanatory, Henry VIII had 2/6 of his wives executed (Boleyn + Howard).
01:27 Henry VIII was obsessed with war and launched several invasions into France which pretty much always failed (1512, 1513, 1522-25). He did get within 50 miles of Paris at one point. I'm sure Francis I got tired of Henry's incessant war-wagings.
01:31 Thomas Wolsey did all the hard work and got none of the credit because Henry VIII hated doing any work other than thinking about war and money. Examples include the Treaty of London 1518 and the 1513 France campaign involving 30,000 troops.
01:37 Edward VI's attempts at preserving Protestantism meant writing his own sisters out of the succession and naming Lady Jane Grey as the next queen. Mary ignored this and took the crown anyway in 1553.
01:43 Mary = Catholic and Edward = Protestant so naturally there was tension, especially when he excluded her from the line of succession for being Catholic.
01:49 During Mary I's reign she executed 285 *heretics* AKA Protestants. Meanwhile, Elizabeth I continued being a Protestant and was actually imprisoned for supposedly supporting rebellions.
01:53 Field of the Cloth of the Gold 1520 = an extravagant waste of money to try impress Francis I. Wine fountains? Really Henry???
01:58 When Henry VIII was trying to get an annulment with Catherine of Aragon, Wolsey tried to convince Campeggio (represented the Pope) to support it. However, Campeggio had been instructed by the Pope to delay and refuse all attempts at getting the annulment, so it was doomed to fail.
02:05 Mary I was a big Catholic.

John F. Kennedy was the president who sent to Congress a strong civil rights bill that was eventually enacted as the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It was also his decision to outlaw the poll tax through an amendment to the constitution to be ratified by the states rather than face a congressional act being blocked in the Senate by filibuster. The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly for the amendment in August 1962. It was enacted after Kennedy's death as the 24th amendment in January 1964. The Kennedy Administration was also the first to institute affirmative action in terms of requiring federal contractors to expand job opportunities for minorities. The administration also appointed Thurgood Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, paving the way for his later appointment to United States Supreme Court a few years later by Lyndon Johnson.

Black American civil rights. African American has a connotation of newly American. Black American means “been here”. Long time, like white Americans and everyone else from back when. African American term is not a favorable term. It stands for something less than what it intends.

was LJG not written into Edward’s will, making her the rightful heir as Mary was written out against Henry VIII’s will? how would Mary be the rightful heir when she basically organised a coup? does the public actually care about a rightful heir?

02:10 Even after the divorce, Catherine of Aragon remained in England basically as a prisoner. This angered Mary I (her daughter) and fuelled her devotion to Catholicism. 02:17 I like to imagine Henry VII watched over his son from beyond and was absolutely infuriated at the mess Henry VIII caused. Breaking with Rome?? Having SIX wives?? Launching pointless invasions and wasting all the Crown’s money?? It’s a no from me. 02:23 Mary I = Catholic and Edward VI/Elizabeth I = Protestants. 02:29 Ooooh the Princes in the Tower. Legend has it they were murdered by Richard III because they had claims to the throne and Richard was a *usurper*. 02:35 So Mary executed 285 heretics mostly for religious expression. Examples include Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury who recanted his recants right before being executed. What a legend. 02:42 Before Mary had even been coronated 1553, churches began holding Mass again despite it technically being illegal under Edward VI’s legislation. The 1553 Act of Repeal undid all Edward’s Protestant laws. 02:50 The three Thomases. Thomas Cranmer was the Archbishop of Canterbury who strongly supported royal supremacy; Thomas Cromwell was the Vice Regent who handled all the legislation; and Thomas Wolsey who had started it all before being executed in 1530 for taking too long. I don’t know if these three knew what they were doing when breaking with Rome, or if it all got carried away from them, like a car with balloons. 02:57 Edward’s 1553 Devise for Succession named LJG as the successor and excluded Mary and Elizabeth. LJG by no choice of her own was queen for 9 days before Mary I claimed it. She did her best okay! 03:04 The Tudor dynasty was super fragile, and a minor as King (Edward VI 1547) was NOT ideal. How could a child lead men into battle, or exploit his people through taxes? A child king was how the Duke of Somerset and Duke of Northumberland rose to power. 03:09 Henry VII (Lancastrian) and Elizabeth of York (Yorkist) ended the Wars of the Roses with their true love 1485. I imagine their conversations went something like this. 03:16 The Field of the Cloth of Gold 1520 was Henry VIII’s big chance to impress Francis I. And a big waste of money since nothing really came of this party, but hey, wine fountains! 03:20 Did Henry VIII really want to break with Rome? Given that he returned to Catholicism in the later years of his reign, I’d say no. But eh, he wanted a son.
