Damn, that was the night I had to stay home from church (on a Wednesday) because of the chicken pox and got to watch the “Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special” on TV. It was also the day that Pan Am 103 was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland. Kurt had five years and some change to live.

I’m a filthy, godless atheist but all those other bands needed a serious dose of Jesus Christ what with their awful band names. Cat Butt? The Throw Ups? My Christ. At least Tad Doyle saw the light and just used his first name as a band name the way our non-existent Lord would have preferred. “Nirvana” is a bit too buddhist for any decent Christian’s salvation purposes, but the name does conjure up visions of peace and perfection, the likes of which we only experience after dedicating our lives to Jesus Christ, Who may not actually exist, but would have done Kurt a whole lot better than Courtney Love. And not “done” like sexually-get your mind out of the gutter. And not “done” like “done in” either. Courtney didn’t kill Kurt-she just complicated his life the way most women do. There’s a lesson there: never spend your precious time or hard-earned money on anything other than hookers and fine Colombian blow if you are a rock star.

This Nirvana show at Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ was only 30-45 minutes away from my house. Nirvana played at J.C. Dobbs, Philadelphia, PA the day before on July 12, 1989 so Nirvana had drove passed my town to get up to Hoboken to play at Maxwell's on July 13, 1989. Also at this show Susie Tennant brought Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and J. Mascis (Dinosaur JR) to this show. This was the first time they Heard Nirvana. After the first few chords of "School" Thurston and J went to the front row of the stage and stayed there for Nirvana's full set... After the show Nirvana hung out with Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, J. Mascis and Susie Tennant. August 1990 Nirvana (with Dale Crover on Drums) played 8 shows opening up for Sonic Youth on their Goo West Coast Tour. After Recording Nevermind between June 10-20, 1991 Nirvana played 8 shows opening up for Dinosaur JR on their Green Mind West Coast Tour. August 20 - September 1, 1991 Nirvana played 10 shows opening up for Sonic Youth on their Goo European Tour (which some footage of these shows can be seen in the Film "1991 The Year Punk Broke" by Dave Markey).

I saw them on 7-6-89 at the Uptown Bar and Grill in Minneapolis, MN. I believe they did all of these and they added Plateau by the Meat Puppets. Kurt changes his voice to suite Plateau song, I got kick out of the contrast. For all the emotion he put into the other songs this one his sense of humor was evident in his voice. He would have been a natural storyteller and actor. I think one reason I think his lyrics are hard to pin down and seem to contradict is his sense of humor. The moment he gets into a serious vein, he saves himself by attacking it with humor, sometimes dark sometimes not. I miss him, R.I.P. Kurt.
