Instead of "Gates" Ya know....This could work again! If you were glued to NCIS, CSI, et al...Just make some tweaks to fit the time. This is grim but there's PLENTY of material to discuss. Much to discuss.
I was way too young to remember a soap opera known as the edge of night because somewhere in the 70s, my mother used to always watch the soap opera back on Philadelphia WKBS channel 48 over 45 years ago .
I used to love these soap opera openings as a kid for so many. The few I actually watched were Dark Shadows and the Doctors in the 70s. Most of the time I'd watch the openings and closings watching game shows or reruns in between.
This title is appropriate for the times we're in, with darkness ( unrighteousess) on the verge of overthrowing the light ( righteousness of God) . Satan is called the accuser of the brethren ( Rev.12:10) in the last days ( times of the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ going on in the world) before darkness ( the power and authority of Satan through his heads and people/followers) takes over completely, in an overwhelming attempt to overthrow the government of God Mat.24:-5,11,24; 1Tim.4:1,2; 2Tim.4:3,4; 2Pet.2:1-3; Acts 20:29,30 are happening now!!! Rev.13:8. Dan.11:32
Proctor and Gamble sponsored a few soap operas. As The World 🌎 Turns was another. The only ones I really watched were Dark Shadows and The Doctors. I was into all the medical shows in the 70s though. I remember laughing at the FDS commercials from daytime TV when I learned exactly what it was for back then. PU...😆 🤣 😂
The opening of this show terrified me when I was a kid. I used to hide behind my Dad's recliner in the living room and cover my ears when this came on.
The credits were filmed from Covington, KY, looking into Cincinnati, OH before Riverfront Stadium opened. You could see the Central Trust tower from the stadium.
Since it was 1970, I was looking for Riverfront Stadium. Cincinnati's skyline is pretty nice to look at, especially in this elevated view from across the Ohio. "Edge" gave the city some nice publicity in the opening and closing credits; I didn't like later on when they switched to LA's skyline
That closing riverside shot of Cincinnati is pretty neat. I imagine Edge watchers were thrilled when it premiered in color in 1967 and the old outdated Cincinnati shot was gone.
Ii read that due to the late afternoon airing - what do you expect from a program called "The Edge of Night"? - it had strong demographics among men coming home from work and small children coming home from school (although some of the latter said they were scared by the theme). IMO opinion P&G should have used some more men and children oriented items in their line for commercials (e.g. use Crest toothpaste instead of Thrill dishwashing liquid - I doubt anyone makes it anymore - and Sure antiperspirant instead of Prell shampoo - my late Mom used to use the tube form of that shampoo which someone else makes.)
I can still hear he sound of the music and the dramatic acting in the background as well as the advertising of detergents and other products. While my mom stayed tuned in, I played with my Hot Wheels and green army men on the floor without a worry in the world except having to take a nap. That music brings it all back.
Cincinnati is where Procter & Gamble has there headquarters. Since Procter & Gamble products sponsored so many soap operas throughout the years, it doesn't surprise me that they'd used Downtown Cincinnati for a backdrop to one of these shows.
That is a great shot of the Cincinnati skyline from across the river as it turns from day to night. The skyline silhouetted against the sunset from river level in the closing credits is an excellent shot, also.
Growing up in Cincinnati, here is some useless 'Edge of Night' Trivia about the downtown scene showing the two prominent buildings in the foreground. The red lettering in this video at the top of the building that is next to the Carew Tower read, "CENTRAL TRUST BANK". Today the signage reads, "PNC".... Useless Trivia..... My Great-aunt Agnes lived in the Carew Tower downtown when I was very young and The Edge of Night came on right after my 3 o'clock children's show ended. The opening intro/music with the Carew Tower shown on TV scared me to death because the Carew Tower scared me when my parents would take me down there to visit "Aunt Agnes".
@@cobaltmidnightoilamp6748 You better believe it! When I would be taken downtown to the Carew Tower to visit "Aunt Agnes"--- even her name was ominous, I was afraid to go to the bathroom because the toilets all had black toilet seats unlike the white ones we had at home and that also scared me to death. I used a metal coffee can because I was too afraid to go in the bathroom.... LOL! Today as an adult, I never tire of watching that ominous opening scene/music showing those downtown buildings.
@@cobaltmidnightoilamp6748 Yes! As a young child, I was told that Aunt Agnes lived in the (then) "Netherland HIlton" Hotel which was part of the multipurpose commercial structure known as the "Carew Tower". I remember one time on a visit looking out her living room window down at the busy city street below which I assume was W. 5th St.. When I was VERY LITTLE, I thought that Aunt Agnes was the person who turned on the outside top tower lights of the Carew Tower at night with a switch she had out in the hallway--- through a child's eyes.... Those nighttime outside tower lights on the Carew Tower always mesmerized me as a little child when viewing them from far away in Delhi. In 1975, I actually stayed at the hotel for three nights when I was a member of the Cincinnati Reds Rooters Club and attending a special Reds Rooters Weekend sponsored by Stroh's Beer. That was when the Reds won their first of back-to-back World Series Championships (1975 and 1976). Sorry so lengthy!
This really takes me back to the good ol' days. My grandmother used to watch all soap operas on channel 2(CBS). By age 2,I was hooked! Back then, if you would asked me what happened on the soaps, I would tell you and what was going to happen tomorrow!
i was born in 1962, from 1964 - 1970 until my mom went back to work full time in 1970, she would watch one life to live, general hospital, edge of night___sometimes as the world turns and days of our lives, she would change the channel back and forth___she would do chores in the am so she could watch the soaps in the afternoon while she did laundry, iron, i remember on commercials she would go put the clothes away or put another load in the washer___my mom use to iron the sheets, the days before perma press cotton
I remember coming home from school and my mother would be watching this. WOW, does it seem so primitive now!! Damn, I may sound like an old man, but the '70's was indeed the last great decade in America. It was like being a kid in the 1950's. It was about simple fun with friends and visiting with family and neighbors. We are slipping so fast into a banal, cold, and dangerous world. It's as if society is in a trance.
The variant of the WCBS test pattern seen at the end, was emitted from a monoscope. The greyscale gradations were achieved by finely spaced concentric lines. That layout dates to about 1955-56, although the way the calls and COL were positioned dates to 1950 and the type font for the calls to about 1948. Would appear the greyscale on the special "bullseye" pattern, in its original state before the numerous processings, would have been 36%, 50% and 64%, with the grey outside the height circle being 57%.
CBS ought to open up their vault take out every soap opera ever shown, let the viewers decide which ones to watch and which to cancel, would be better than they broadcast now
Mr. Kramer also handled the "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite"; after he departed the network in January 1972, the newscast was V/O'd through May by Norm Stevens, then from May 1972 to the end of February 1979 by Bob Hite. Beautiful theme
If "The Edge Of Night" were paired with "Search For Tomorrow" that would be sonething to behold
Stay tuned for Gomer Pyle, USMC, Coming up next on over most of these CBS Stations.
The opening is so eerily similar to the PSA; It's 10PM, do you know where your children are? The intense voiceover frightened me as a kid.

a bottle of dish soap looks the same 50 years later.
"This portion was brought to you by Safeguard; the soap your family really needs..."😂

this show people is on CBS on channel 2 on tv but it does not come out on tv anymore so please remember this show ok people.
Memories....
I loved hearing this end theme when I was a kid. It meant that the "Buckskin Bill Show" was coming up next.

Two of my favorite actresses were cast members on this show. They were Lori Loughlin (who portrayed Jody) and the late Dixie Carter (Brandy).
The storyline of Adam Drake, his presumed deceased wife, Nicole, and his new love interest, Brandy, was quite engaging
The opening of this show terrified me when I was a kid. I used to hide behind my Dad's recliner in the living room and cover my ears when this came on.
Philly Cinephile, I even suppose it traumatized you @ that time.
Me too.
What childhood memories
YES! The same thing for me when my Mom would be watching it!!!!!!!
me too!!!!!!! those were scary graphics!
The theme music is great and Harry Kramer's voiceover is simply the best. It manages to be stern yet soothing at the same time.
The organist went in on the Hammond B-3 at 1:29.

What city skyline is that? I recall this show from way back!
Cincinnati. (used as the city backdrop 1956-1980)
Great soap opera
“NIGHT” stood out whenever I saw the logo as a child.
"Soft Water Thrill...the only dishwashing liquid that softens water." Not quite accurate--ALL dishwashing liquids have to soften dishwater! 🤣

I had a crush on the 2nd Mike Karr (Laurence Hugo).

they glory days when you could live on a one person income!
This was back when tv was fun and real. There was no cable at that time.
Amen. I grew up in 60s and remember tv rabbit ears. 📺 we had 3 maybe 4 channels at best.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Love this classic from the past. The piano style is beautiful. I wasn't born yet when this came out.
Wow, they sure sell a lot of soap on these soap ope... oh, nowwww I get it!

Taken from a top of the Death Hi8, Ky. Overlooking the Cincinnati's Skyline! Stunning!
Marc Abramson, that is so COOL, as I recognize the Cincinnati skyline.🏙
Used to watch with my grandmother. The opening sequence used to scare me when I was small
me too, i thought it sounded like a horror movie opening

There is a graphic t-shirt on Tee Public website.
The ringtone would be perfect for as soon as you leave the house
