I read somewhere that the artwork for the Mr Bungle debut on Warner Bros was totally a different image than the dead clown autopsy art we all know and love. I don’t know the exact details but the band had contacted a photographer who did some very disturbing pictures involving real corpses and body parts, like old embalmed stiffs and neatly arranged still life’s if dismembered arms etc. I cannot post the actual photo here but it can be easily found. I doubt WB would have let the band use this image as it is quite extreme and it turned out the photographer wouldn’t let Mr Bungle use it because another band had hijacked it for their own sick as fuck album. This was done without permission and the photographer decided to not lease out any of his work for LP art. The band that used the bizarre image without clearance was Pungent Stench on their second album the utterly depraved and brutally hilarious “Been Caught Buttering “ . Look it up and imagine a Bungle logo superimposed somewhere on picture and you have what they were considering for the debut’s artwork.

My introduction to Mr Bungle was the song “Bungle Grind” from a rare cassette only compilation called Northwest Hardcore around 1989 or 1990. The tape featured some other noteworthy bands like The Accused, Wermacht , Melvin’s and Dehumanizers. After that I got the debut album and a nice cassette bootleg of the Bowl of Chiley demo (it is a fun recording, definitely more ska less metal)

In the early 90s maybe 1992 I went to see Napalm Death,Sepultura, Sacred Reich at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas TX. This was when Napalm Death were touring to promote the Utopia Banished album and had just got the new drummer. Sepultura were blowing up big and lots of people attended this show in the notorious cowboy venue that was made famous from a legendary Sex Pistols performance in 1978. The crowd was pumped up with several circle pits and lots of headbanging. There was a group of Nazi Skinheads inside that were intimidating and sucker punching random people . Well, at some point after Sacred Reich or Gammacide’s set we are treated to a wonderful spectacle as Barney , Shane, Danny of ND and Max and Igor of Sepultura along with some road crew and Sick of It All(didn’t get to play) guys proceeded to forcibly remove the entire crew of skins from the venue. It was really amazing that they came out from the back stage and rounded up all these big skinheads by the neck and tossed them all out, no refund. Everything was made right after they gave that crew the boot. Napalm Death and Sepultura both delivered epic performances that night .
