I remember being young and I watched We Were Soldiers with my Pepaw a Vietnam Veteran. He had tears coming down his face and I did not understand why until I was older and listened to this song again knowing the lyrics and I had tears as well because I understood what he was sad about even though I could really never truly understand his pain. Thank you Veterans for all you do and have done to keep our nation safe.🙏

It's about a Sergeant Mc Kenzie of the Seaforth Highlanders, he was from Moray in Scotland and was killed in action at the Battle of Arras, trying to defend an injured comrade, he was bayoneted to death. It was written by his great, great grandson, Joe Kilna MacKenzie, who was a founding member of a Glasgow band called Clann An Drumma meaning in English "Children of the Drum". It was originally a poem which was put to music. The poem title being "the Ballad of Sergeant Mc Kenzie". Sergeant Charles Stuart Mc Kenzie was killed in action on the 9th of April 1917 and is buried in the Highland Cemetery, Roclincourt in Pas-de-Calais, alongside other men from the 51st (Highland) Division...rest in peace boys...
