Why Does This Exist?! - Patagonia Atom 8L Sling Bag - REVIEW - EDC, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck

This popular EDC sling left us scratching our heads. This is a bag that doesn't really excel in any areas other than construction and sustainability but that is accompanied by a truly frustrating design. Overall, we found that the bag seems to lack any cohesive vision for how it might be used, presenting the owner with two pockets (one divided) and seemingly no thought as to what might be store...

      Good question. I am a pretty big fan of the signature carhartt brown color but I wasn't very interested in the design of their bags. IRL this bag kind of shifts colors depending on the situation. It sometimes looks brown, but others it looks copper or even just yellow. I also wanted a single color design that wouldn't show dirt as easily as most of the lighter colors.

    This bag is NOT for everyone. For example, my partner likes the "black hole" bag style. Everything just goes into the bag, she will dig through it later to find what she needs. Lots of things go in there throughout the day. The Atom 8L is not for her. However, it IS the perfect bag for me. I only carry with me what I absolutely need. I like all of the things I'm carrying around to be organized and easily accessible. This bag is perfect for me. The front most pouch contains my wallet, keys, and other things that would normally go in my pockets. The back pocket(s) carry my small travel instrument, my notebook, and some other small items; leaving me a little room in case I find a small thing I just need to carry with me outside of my pockets. I also really love the shoulder strap. I wear a lot of tank tops and wide necked shirts and the padded strap really does make a difference for me carrying my bag around on long days. It's exactly what I needed from a bag. But this bag is not for everyone. I think it just depends on your bag needs and how and what kind of stuff you take with you.

    In my opinion in bags if you do not compromise I have to carry a large weight , as a woman I carry a lot, my only leather wallet is pretty heavy, but thank you for few points you highlighted, very useful. Shame as these are well known brands and products should be well thought through, but often they are not, yet we pay a lot of money for a their imperfect products.

    “We have a front pocket of indeterminate use” - No no, it’s very determinate. That’s where your keys and other quick access items like a wallet can go. Hence the internal key clip and general wallet-size of the pocket. “The back pocket has a divider in the middle for an unknown reason” - No no, it’s actually there for an exceptionally known reason. It’s a tablet sleeve. Like Patagonia states on the website description for this product. This type of sassy faux-uneducated review style is so cringey. We get it, you personally don’t happen to like this bag. Don’t pretend like there aren’t good reasons for why certain features exist. Lame.

      You can feel any way you want to about the video. That is fine. However, may I ask why you are looking up review videos on a bag you clearly already own and like? If you know and feel these things, why don't you make your own video?

    • @michaels9574
      @michaels9574 2 місяці тому

      @@RideorDieGaM I don’t own the bag, I’m doing research on it and unfortunately stumbled upon your “review” in the process. Another hilarious thing about your assessment of this bag: in your replies to various commenters pointing out similar flaws that I have, you claim to know and understand that this bag is primarily aimed at light hikers, but you focus so much on what mobile gaming platforms will fit or not fit in what pocket as if that’s something that anyone other than you is concerned about for this product. I’m glad you found the tomtoc, a *tech sling* for the very hyper specific use case you personally happen to think a sling should satisfy. Why you ever felt that this Atom sling would be something you’d get use out it is beyond me, let alone why you took the time to craft this annoying and intentionally off-putting review of what is essentially at this point a classic of the bag world that only you apparently happen to have a problem with.

    • @RideorDieGaM
      @RideorDieGaM 2 місяці тому

      @@michaels9574 The review includes an attempt to fit some daily use tech items someone might want to carry because I didn't see that in any other videos and seemed to be a common question. If you look at Amazon reviews there are tech fit questions on almost every bag. It's not indicative of my use. I rarely, if ever, take these items out of the house. As I explained, we have used it for hiking and daily use multiple times and it wasn't comfortable and didn't fit basic hiking items, like a water bottle, camera, light jacket, etc. without bulging. Unfortunately for me, I thought I could rely on peoples media literacy to bridge the gap between the fit test and the bag assessment. I was wrong. I still own this bag and I still consider it for daily and hiking use and unfortunately every time it has come up short. The tomtoc is a better sling because it's more comfortable and daily use items fit in it better, tech or not. I didn't get paid to make this review. You didn't pay to watch it. You're complaining about something that you didn't have to watch with with the few precious minutes you have on this earth. My opinion is not the only one on UA-cam. I'm failing to generate sympathy here. If you would like to heap fawning praise on a very popular product produced by a large corporation in your own video, best of luck. Maybe this is the push you need to bridge the gap from upset commenter to upset video creator.

      @RideorDieGaM 3 місяці тому

      Thank you. I do pull this bag out regularly when I'm considering what EDC solution to use for the day, and have considered creating a follow up review, but ultimately I arrive at the same conclusions every time I use it. The primary problem for me is that any water bottle over 12 ounces dominates the available space inside. I think having a separate water bottle sleeve or pocket on the right side would greatly aid the overall usability of the Atom and I imagine I would use it regularly.

      It does. I some times bring both my old and my new 15,6 laptop in the laptop pocket. I bought my 23 liter in Berlin in September. In January, my wife bought the 32 liter in Singapore, but findes it a little bit big for every day use, so she bought the 23 liter in Kiel in Germany a few weeks ago, Now i use my 23 liter for PC, chargers, toiletries, a water botle(on the inside) and a food pack and i use the 32 liter for my clothes. Unfortunately Dechatlon doesnt have any shops or ship to my country, so we have to go to a country with a Dechatlon store to buy from them. At the moment we have 2x23l, 32l, 45l, 50l and 65 liter Backpacks from Decathlon. Next time i will buy a Travel 500 Organizer 40l

    • @RideorDieGaM
      @RideorDieGaM 6 місяців тому

      I don't disagree, but my plan with buying these games is to have them throughout my life and play them gradually over time. The Nintendo Switch is my favorite system, ever. I didn't have the means to buy and play most of the games I wanted on the SNES and GC, which were my former favorite systems and now they are too expensive to buy and play. I think now that the development cycle has slowed down so considerably, we'll be waiting longer and longer for actual new good games to come out (not remasters), so having a deep back catalog will be helpful. Not to mention that this is probably the last console generation where a decent amount of the catalog is available physically. I expect to be purchasing far fewer games in a landscape where they cost over 70 bucks and are download only in an eshop that Nintendo will eventually discontinue support for.

Like the rest of the controller I can really say that I don't think that much about it when I'm using it, which is amazing because the d-pad is something that would normally drive me crazy. I can say at least that if you just used the d-pad for a game that it should be a much more comfortable experience than some others. Hope that helps!

    I use this to carry my 14 inch macbook pro and a few accessories, whenever I travel to work. It's the perfect compact size. I'd love a backpack version that was probably 9-10L max, but remained compact like this

      Exactly! Why no one is making something like this, and for me - i'd like a simple lower pocket, a bit protective for small mirrorless camera. That's all I need.

      @@tzachmost hopefully we see it one day. I love compact backpacks, that are super lightweight and easy to carry. I bought the Fyro T22 backpack. That won't be out until the end of the year. I bought that for when I have to carry the extra items, like food and drink to work, when I can't be bothered ordering. So that backpack will be perfect for that. Whereas this one is perfect for just my laptop and a few accessories. This would still be big enough to fit a food container anyway, but I bought the big one for when I need more than one food container and more than one drink also

      Used to have a 9L Columbia backpack that could hold a similar amount of stuff to this Tomtoc - I think it was advertised as a kid's model though. Only got it from a garage sale for like 10USD but was still sturdy enough to last 3 years of regular use 🥲

      @@alquanna there’s always Alpaca Metro 12L. I’m thinking hard about this one, but it’s 110€ for me, a bit of an ouch

      @@tzachmost that's about £76 for us in the UK. Looks like a great compact backpack. With 12L you can add a couple of extra things, rather than a small tight 9L but this tomtoc sling feels smaller than a 9L. Tomtoc don't usually give accurate numbers

      I agree! I actually have an OLED and a regular switch, but I travel with the regular switch since it's already a little battle damaged.

      It happened because you went out and got what you chose to have and had the means to do so, sounds like a silly first world problem to complain about getting exactly what you want. Own it, enjoy them and be grateful that you can when others can’t 💪
