Most anything outdoors. I have gotten older, and have a lot of knowledge, that I would like to share with friends, family and anyone else. I will be combining my love for Amateur Radio, Camp, Backpacking, Bushcrafting, Stealth Camp, Survival and other DiY things I can come up with to make the outdoors more fun, Safer and easier! Thank you for your interest.
Poncho Shelter! Can You Put Up a Plow Point, From Inside the Poncho?
As a prior service person ( Army ). I have the tendency, to want to go outside in rain and snow, and play with my toys.
I know that isn't normal for most folks.
But for the folks here, like me,
Especially Army or Marines
This is Normal! lmao
I will be doing this again!
Enjoy, God Bless!

Well the video isn't real good! The audio is even worse. This part of the video aired in September of 2019 The "How I did it" , and the "awning", parts of the video aired in the first week of October of 2019. I actually have video from previous years, but were just used as an memory aid, and not meant for UA-cam. So you can imagine how that video turned out. I knew nothing about taking video, a...

4lbs Shelter Kit Setup, and It Works!

These smaller shelters are designed to do one thing. Give you a dry place to sleep! Just barely enough to keep you covered, but light weight, very light weight. Total weight of this shelter, is four pounds. The weight is for everything you see, but the bag it's carried in. It could easily be made into a bed roll.

Building a Small Brick Fire Lay, In the Woods, at Studio A .

A nice little project. Someone, in the past, had a round fire pit, made from these bricks. They where under several inches of debris, I found them the hard way. I tripped over them a time or two, so I dug them up. Now they are useful again.

The best thing about being able to put two tarps together like this is, If the weather is good and you only need a little coverage, put up a half shelter, easy up, easy down! Or you can use one for the shelter, and the other for an awning like I did in my Stealth Shelter video ua-cam.com/video/QMXCSWpDCI4/v-deo.html

Although not really an original theme, The Army had been doing this for years, hanging it from a ridge line was. When I first started messing with tarp shelters, they weren't everywhere like they are now. I like a smaller shelter, so it only made se...

How Long is that Piece of Cordage, Know at a Glance, Color Coding My Cordage

I like to precut my 550 cord, to different lengths. I don't always need a 20 or 30 foot long piece of coradage. Although I do need to know how long a certain piece of paracord is, so that I am selecting the length I need to get the job done. Anyway, this is my answer to being able to identify the different lengths, at a glance. Yep an original idea from the old man!

I was really surprised after seeing you hoist the ridgeline taut from underneath the poncho!! I would have just hunkered down at the base of a stump or small tree and waited the storm out. Options, we always need options!!
I just try and show folks what's possible.
Another clever video, thanks for Sharing .
Thanks for the kind words Steve, gotta share with The Virginia Bushcrafter
Thanks for another great video. I truly enjoy watching your shelter builds and how you explain how and why you construct them in different ways.😊👍👏🤗
Thanks you, glad to have you here
I need to make up some pre rigged ridge line.
Every little thing you can have, already done, will be a blessing if you ever have to set it up for real. Thanks for stopping by for sure.
They are handy..Gary gave me one at the meet-up last year....
That's not to bad, a lil practice and you prolly barely get wet.
I like about any shelter that involves my poncho lol. Have you ever heard of " Far North Bushcraft and Survival " ? From a guy name Lonnie and his wife Connie. When I first started watching outdoor type videos, He had one of the best channels on YT.
Good job mate! Emergency shelter at its finest
Thank you much
And now your a You Tube Star🌠 What an accomplishment!!! hahaha Just keep teachin' brother.. Someone out there IS listening and learning...
@@Plain-Ole-Chuck I don't know about the star part? But thank you for the kind works. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@RAYANDERS-w4t Your welcome.
Cheers to you with the sleeping pad, I need something with more cushion. But I am definitely with you on the woobie, it's my blanket choice when nighttime temps are 60° or above. And I love that it still insulates even when wet.
I hear you on that woobie! lol
I had my Wife sew across the bottom and up the side, about a foot. I can use that rascal as a sleeping bag or a top quilt now. I recently bought an air mattress that is 7" thick! I'll make a video on that sometime soon. Oh it's nice, a little heavy, but nice. Thanks Sue.
that is a great setup with tons of room
@HarshmanHills Happy Thanksgiving my friend
Nothing says love like a fried piece of Spam. A beautiful day to be outdoors, a little snack and little nap, don’t get much better. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, your videos are a blessing! Semper Fi!
@stevemick6569 Thank you for the kind words. Have a great Thanksgiving, Semper Fi, Marine. God bless.
Fried spam on a hike, with cherry tomatoes, I don't think there's a finer meal to eat outdoors! The nap after such arduous labor is just icing on the cake!!!🤣🤣🤣
@josephmorgan3715 lol! That's right! If you can't take a nap, what good is it? Thanks Joe, happy Thanksgiving.
I'm not gonna lie. Although I love Spam and absolutely love cherry tomatoes I couldn't concentrate on the meal with that pad and pillow in view... All I could think of was a nap hahahaha
BTW Nice tip in heating the pan to sterilize Been doing it for years.
@Plain-Ole-Chuck I had a lot going on there, a nap was definitely part of the game plan! Lol
@Plain-Ole-Chuck Thanks Chuck.
@@Plain-Ole-Chuck Happy Thanksgiving!
Good move.i find wind is the worst. One of those metal perforated dustbins are great .just cut slots for the pot handle and remove the bottom so you can gently roll it up
@@peetsnort Nor a bad idea, thanks
It would be only under the most desperate of circumstances that I'd call that home for the night. And with the rain we get you'd better pray for a dry night! The older I get the more I like my hammock, climbing up off the ground is a b*tch 😂😂😂.
This thing has been tried in the rain, on multiple occasions, placement is everything though. And yes sir, it is getting tougher by the year, the getting up part. I will probably give it all up in a few years. Until then, gotta keep showing folks all of the options. Have a great Thanksgiving.
@@GrandFatherOutdoors We get crazy rain and storms in Kentucky, not sure where you are. I'm going to keep going as long as I can, it will be a sad day when I have to give it up. Meanwhile, good for you for getting out there and have yourself a great Thanksgiving and Christmas!

@theholisticmachine1493 That's not a fart! That's the air pillow groning under my weight. Does sound a little like one though. I heard it when I was editing, that's how I know what it was.
@GrandFatherOutdoors haha....good stuff man..... I appreciate your videos...👍

Hey Ken, good to see you youngman.
Pretty slick Grandpa! Semper Fi!
@stevemick6569 Thanks Steve.
Bravo.
What kind of canister is that? Never seen one like that... Is it refillable?
I forgot the name of it, I think James has one too. It's refillable, slightly heavier than the other type of canisters, but smaller, and will last a pretty good while. It also has a place for a camera stand on the bottom ( for use with the lantern ), which I utilized with the chopping board. Camping Moon BKTC-28, It and the refill adapter was around $50 on Amazon
Me too never seen one like that
@@irmuggle Camping Moon BKTC-28 on Amazon, with an adapter to fill and refill it, for around $50. They ain't cheap, but I'm glad I spent the money.

Is this the same thing you bought? We have Chuck wanting one now! lol
@ I don’t have one like that but I might have to pick one up
@@HarshmanHills OK, I really like mine.
If you had half dozen mid fize paper spring clamps....
One could hang the green tarp in diamond config over a hammock and the brown tarp on the front side if the hammock. Tie the front side of the diamond config to the support in the middle of the brown tarp. That would increase the property tax....
@garyantley Food for thought ! No more taxes though! Lol
@garyantley That right there is what this channel is about. Take an idea, and fabricate new ideas of your own, pass that idea along too. Thanks for stopping by.
Well Grandpa, that’s pretty nice setup, trial and error until you get what you’re happy with. Yep, I still carry my dad’s pocket knife. Can’t go wrong with Spam and Coke. Thanksgiving blessings to you and your family as well. Semper Fi.
@stevemick6569 Well Steve, I had a lot of fun, just messin around. Thanks for the visit my friend.
@@stevemick6569 Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
So you have a bedroom and a living room nice 👍
Cool right? It's not as complicated as it looks, once you get the bugs worked out.
great setup there
@HarshmanHills cool right?
Thank you thank you Ed. Answers a lot of my questions. Shows me a lot of what I was thinking won’t work. lol. My plan was to separate the two at the peak to allow for a small fire in the middle. After seeing it set up I can tell that wouldn’t be possible safety wise. Still a nice roomy setup. Great job buddy! Much appreciated
lol, Two hours of taking video, 10hrs of, on and off editing! Now we know. It was fun too try anyway.
I don't think I would do this for just an over nighter, but if I am going to be there a couple of days? Something like this would work.
Very, Very Intuitive. I also use my thermal-rest sit pad as a jnee pad as well. Thanks for Sharing
Wasn't sure it would work, I thought it would. If you plan to stay in that area for a while, this would make a good base camp.
Nice light setup, I do have a question about your mat . Does it sweat ? I have a cheap closed cell mat from walmart slid it in my hammock and by morning my whole back felt like ball sweat. The mat doesn’t breathe which makes it very uncomfortable. I didn’t have this problem with my klymit air mattress until it sprung a leak. Been looking at self inflating mattress’s but nothing seems to be the right fit except for the RCP one
Did you have the silver side up, or down? If the silver side is too close to the skin, it will sweat really bad.
@ it doesn’t have a silver side just a smooth side and a pebbled side, it’s one of those cheap 6 dollar will use to be about 6 bucks 😂. In cold weather a air mattress really works wonders in a hammock. What I’m doing now is working but you know we are always looking for the perfect setup
great kit that gets the job done.
lol, yup, more room for other things
Nice and Efficient Setup. Thanks for Sharing.
Thanks Steve
Good morning Grandpa! Great, quick and light setup. Take a little nap and enjoy the rest of your day!
The day I this video this, oh yeah, I took a nap lol
My lightest shelter system weighs in at ~5lb. Unlike yours it includes a mosquito net (lanshan mesh inner) and a (thin) inflatable sleeping pad. I've tested it down to 12c ( ~55F ) but it should be fine to about 45F unless I am hungry/exhausted.
5lbs is still pretty light for shelter. I'd be ok with it.
nice kit... I know I sometimes sound critical of these type of shelters but I sometimes fail to realize these are for emergency or temporary shelter.. I'm always thinking of extended camping. This would be worth it's weight in gold in a overnight or weather related situation.. Trust me these shelters are stored away in my head and the simple basics are always n my truck... Just in case
Add a larger , say 10x10 over it, like a canopy, and you get the best of both worlds. A lot of my smaller shelters, stem from my get home bag ideas. I'll soon be 65, and my body reminds me daily, that it's not what it use to be. So I need protection from the elements, but as light as I can get it. It's not home, but it will help me get there.
I think of folks like you and I, when I do some of these things. We both know it won't be as comfortable as home, but life is unpredictable, and something like this is way better than standing or crouching, waiting for the sun to come up and warm things up.
Take care Chuck, I got a video to make for you. If I can make it work, you're going to like the one I'm working on now.
@@GrandFatherOutdoors I am 65 and carrying unnecessary weight is a no no. I’d probably carry a 10x10 for better coverage in rain though and with my back being a pale shadow of what it once was a little more padding. Great set up though.
Great little kit to keep behind the truck seat!
Howdy Bill, behind the seat, in a roll, or in a day pack. Great place for a portable nap spot too! lol Set it up kick back, and check those eye lids for holes. Even on a rainy day!
