A Conversation About: Music, Religion and the Black Atlantic
Organized by Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Centre for Religious Studies and Theology at Lund University & Oscar Signe Krook's Foundation. The talk discusses the rise of both highly politicized music of the Black Atlantic tradition, from Reggae and Bob Marley to Afrobeat and Fela Kuti, as well as hip-hop in the US and Americas more broadly and how these often irreverent and always "weaponized" genres went up against the rise of highly conservative forms of Islam and Christianity that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s across West and North Africa, from Saudi-inspired Islamism to American-funded evangelical trends among Christians. Finally, Aidi and LeVine look at the intersection of religion and pop culture in the neoliberal global era through music in contemporary African and African American music, exploring the continuities and challenges of producing, consuming and politicizing popular culture today on both sides of the Atlantic.
Participants:
Hisham Aidi is a lecture at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He is also a fellow at Columbia’s Center for Contemporary Black History, where he edits the journal Souls. He has also worked as a journalist, contributing to various magazines (ColorLines, The New African, Middle East Report. He was born in Tangier, Morocco to an Arabic and Berber-speaking family. His latest book Rebel Music - Race, Empire, and the New Muslim Youth Culture (2014) won the American Book Award in 2015.

Dr. Rania Maktabi, Associate Professor, Østfold University College, Norway A decade has passed since female citizens in Kuwait were enfranchised in 2005. Political rights for women, and the mobilization of stateless Bidun in Kuwait after the 2011 Arab Uprisings, are two factors that impact on the politicization of pressures to reform the patriarchal nationality law in Kuwait formed in 1959. Here's the mindless bubblegum song which got up Qutb's nose so distressingly - that he totally rejected the entire epistemological premise of Western Modernity on the abject awfulness of it ....*"Baby, It's Cold Outside"* was written by Frank Loesser in 1944 & popularized in the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter: ua-cam.com/video/ZXU8DPEkKVk/v-deo.html I can't help but empathize with Qutb's outraged aesthetic sensibility, in this particular case.

Also Said Qutb love of Martin Heidegger exported Heideggerianism to Iran. Martin Heidegger is one of the very rare western Philosophers teached on Iranian Universities. His rejection of modernity and his open admiration of the Nazis and his Death Cult Philosophy directly influenced the Death Cult of Islamism. But Qutb also read and admired other haters of modernity postwar WW II like Ernst Jünger and Alexis Carrel the same right wing Intellectuals who a quoted by today's german right wing Party AFD when they fear monger against all of Islam... They lie anyways... because they don't have a problem with Islamism, like they like to claim as long as it is in countries of the middle east or Persia... they hate only Muslims, Non muslism Arabs in Germany. And its so important to show this same Far right wing Writers Islamist and Nazis, New far right wingers admire all together. The First the thing German right wing Party did after the syrian war was sending delegates to Assad to make a Deal to send refuges back... even people who would have killed by the Syrian Regime... the AFD loves to make Deals with Islamist... Now after the attacks of Hamas... there is no word about supporting non-radical Muslism against Islamism... they claim to be solidaric to Israel only with their arguments of deporting Muslims from Germany... while they still would do deals with Assad this islmist open Isreal hating Dictator ! The truth is radical Islamist ideas and radical right wing ideas profit by each other.

Palestine was never a land a people or a country. Jews were indigenous to the land of Israel for 3500 years

  • @إسرائيلوطريقالحريرالقدسالعاصمة

In 1948 it was **defensive**!!!? And this is a sample of a "reasonable" Jew? I guess they can get away with anything. Israelis are now victims of Israel!!! Never waste an opportunity to be a victim eh! It was communism before. "I am a Bolshevik" Ben Gurion. Now its "Fascism". Its never Jewishness that's the problem. Funny like that.

Both Qutb and Khomeni were Terrorists , The Godfathers of Modern day Sunni terror groups and Usuli shia terror groups. And The Islamic Golden Age was mastermind by the Ismaili Fatimids of Egypt , North Africa and the Lavant plus the Mu'tazili Abbassids of Baghdad and Persia . Both have nothing to do with the Sunnism of Qutb and Usuli Shiism of Khomeni . Ismailis view the divine Law in an Esoteric manner , they called it " Batini Ta'wil " and they trash the Literal Meaning of the law Mu'tazilites View the divine law in a rational manner , they trash everything going against Logic and reason . Both Ismailis and Mu'tazilis rejects the divine laws as understood by Sunnism and Usuli Shiism .

You have no idea what you are talking about. Mu'tazila thought was very influencial on the Jafari-Shia school, which rules modern day Iran. Its no coincidence that Iran is doing so well in all fields regarding science, technology and innovation, its by far the most successful islamic country regarding that. Also the Jafari Shia-Ulama which governs Iran and other Shia lands such as Iraq and Lebanon is very open towards a lot of diffrent islamic and pre-islamic intellectual thinkers, from the Golden Age and later on. Khomeini himself was deeply influenced and educated in the thought of thinkers like ibn Sina, Suhrawardi, ibn Arabi or even Plato.
