Ontario Outdoor Explorer

Outdoor exploration of Ontario Canada through hiking, camping and canoeing. I will do do both solo and friend and family trips to various provincial parks, conservation areas and crown land. While I would love to do the longer expedition trips I am mainly a weekend warrior as I do have to maintain a full time career. I am primarily a hobby photographer and will try and provide more information on the plants and animals that I find along the way. Come along for the ride!

Five day backcountry canoe trip in mid fall on Ramsey Lake in the Sudbury District where we get dropped off and picked up by the last remaining running Budd Car, a 3 carriage train /engine. We started at the North East Arm of Ramsey lake and headed south for 2 days before getting into Island lake and then eventually into the hogsback channel and back to the small rail town of Biscotasing. Stars over David Thomson Pond

On the East Side the Algonquin Park is a small pond just off Highway 60 that I believe was called David Thomson Pond after the renowned Cartographer who explored and mapped a very large part of Western Canada on behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company. His Dedicated Wife accompanied him for much of his explorations. Had a Clear night forcated so captured this last week. Enjoy!

Quick weekend tip up to Algonquin for a wet Car camping experience at Mew Lake. Did some of smaller Trails (Beaver Pond, Spruce Bog Boardwalk, Hemlock Bluff), Hiked the loop around Provoking Lake and took in several waterfalls. Unfortunately had some technical issues with Camera mic, so had to make due. Enjoy!

Amazing video Doug. Great camera work. Thanks for cutting wood for the winter trip!!
No wonder you were so wet!!!
Yep was a bit damp... 50% Snow 50% Sweat....
thanks for the video!!
Glad You Enjoyed it. I need to get back to hiking the Bruce. Just never enough time.
What site is this?
Hi, This was on the South side of the Island that is on the south west side of the lake. When you come in from the portage from Kitty Stay to your left.
I don't know you but I am so deeply happy that someone else cares to really pay attention to all the nature in this city. I wonder how many hours you spent getting this footage. This is very inspiring. I'm always seeing things right in the middle of the city's east end arroud Danforth and Greenwood -- hawks, turkey vultures and woodpeckers, quiet troops of skunks, a possum, the very unusual rabbit and, of course, our tubby prankster pals the raccoons, who seem convinced that, as long as they master the art of freezing and and strategic creeping we won't notice that big ball-shaped overstuffed-anteater silouette. So many people miss hawks landing on streetlights, because they wouldn't think to look. There is so much here.
I Couldn't Agree More. While I do Live in the West end and most of this was captured in Halton, (Usually on my way home from work) I do know there is an incredible amount of green space right in toronto and all you need to do is spend some time looking for it. Thanks for the Kind Words and yes this did take a fair amount of time and there is lots of footage that was dark or to shaky to use (600 mm lens moves alot even on a tripod) Cheers!
Well done sir!
Thanks! Much Appreciated !
Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍14
Thank you so much 👍
Another fantastic video, Doug! The nature scenes are beautiful and so calming. It’s seems incredibly peaceful.
Glad you enjoyed it! Much appreciated!
😢😢😢 I saw this in Canada
ya the clouds cleared just before totality so got lucky others weren't so unfortunatly
Just found about about your channel after we became friends on Facebook :)... Booth lake is also one of my favorite lakes in the Park. Looking forward to check out all your videos on the channel. Subbed!
Welcome aboard! Thanks For Subscribing!
Glad to meet you on the portage on day one as you were heading in. Over all, looks like you had a good trip except for that lost lens. 😢
Thanks Good to Meet You as well. I just really need to go to the gym more :) I have already gotten a replacement lens so will be back at is soon. It was on sale the week after so was goot timing i guess... Hope you had a good Trip as well Take care!
Salut. really epic ~adios~Ontario.
Thank You! Enjoy!
paddled by that site many times nice view but its not far enough in the bush for me .
Agreed, We there were a couple of guys on this trip that I hadn't triped with before so wanted a short paddle. Next trip is 4 night 5 day on the north west side of Algonquin,. Definitely more remote. Hope you enjoyed the video
Winter camping is something else, nothing makes you appreciate a nice fire like freezing cold temperatures.
Couldn't agree more! and gathering the wood also warms you up.
Thanks for showing us the Island! Planning on heading up there for some fall fishing and camping for a couple of days.
You're Welcome! Hope you have more luck than I did fishing, just keep your eye out for poison ivy. Wood for fires might be a bit limited so you may want to bring in some. (Locally purchased of course.)
@@ontariooutdoorexplorer1201 Great! thanks for info 👍🏼.
Wonderful video, great music, beautiful scenery and a lovely tribute to your dad, Ken Begbie.
Many thanks, Glad you Enjoyed it!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Another amazing video, nice relaxing background music! It's nice to see your dad with you in this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's Amazing... Watching from 'Bangladesh'
Thank You Much Apprciated!
Great Video! I'm planning to do a canoe trip to wolf Island in August and camp for a couple days.
Have fun! Just be on the lookout for Poison Ivy. and if fishing hopefully you will have better luck!
The Osprey is feeding on the mate of that King Bird...
Possibly, but I did see it land and it wasn't carrying anything. There was also an osprey looking nest in another tree to the right, but it may have been a Heron nest as there a small rookery just beside here on an adjacent island.
Give A Hoot, Don't Pollute, Woodsy 🦉 Owl
Could Not Agree More!
LOOKS LIKE A KING OF BIRDS!
Pretty small for a King but definitely perched on a throne
Cute
Yep he is quite cute. Watch him for over an hour before it got too dark to film, missed him leaving his roost.
Planning the Spring trips, solo and duo, and your video is exactly what I was looking for. Starting part 2 now, thanks man! Keep on paddling, stay safe out there.
Awesome, thank you! It was a great trip though a challenge at some points. Stay Safe as well!
Beautiful! Love the reflection of the Moon off the lake when it was close to setting
Thank you very much!

Awe it's just a baby
Lol Not Exactly... about a 900 lb Bull... would have loved to find the antlers he shed.
Good on you guys! I was born in the North and this is what we did in the winter! Test your metal! You know what nature taught you!
Well said! As Long as you can stay dry you get used to the cold fairly quickly. I was surprised how we adjusted considering the weird warm winter we have had especially in Southern Ontario
Great video! Do you get to Algonquin often?
Not as much as I would like, I grew up in Whitney so it is home away from my current home.
Brutal temperature. Well done camping in those conditions.
Thanks 👍 Was pretty rough but your body can acclimatize fairly well surprisingly, just need to keep dry
As usual, great trip and great video. You brave!!!
Thank you!
Great trip!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Just retuned from 2 Nights back county in Algonquin. Hope to have Video up by end of the week. Stay Tuned
Great pack!
Thanks! only a little concerned for Friday night as -22, but should be OK.
Nice fish!
Thanks! There were a few good sized ones but mostly these small guys, Caught about 75 of them but most went back.
Another great video Doug! I guess no one was brave enough to jump in the lake with Kyle🙂.
Glad you enjoyed it, and No, the ice only went out 2-3 weeks prior so not yet swimming weather. He even said the first 6" were ok but putting his legs down was cold.
Great video Doug
Thanks!!
Great photos and videos. You have a real talent at capturing Ontario's beauty. Keep sharing your knowledge and experience with others!
Thanks, Glad you were able to make it. Had a good time and hope you did as well.
Awesome trip! Hope to do it again next year!
You are Always Welcome, Glad you had a good time
Great review, keep going.
Thanks. Hope to more this summer, but haven’t books any sites as of yet. Busy with other things. Thanks for watching!
Great Video Doug. Thank you for the amazing trip!
Glad you enjoyed it, We will get out again at some point!
Great video. We are heading to Pen next weekend! Would you have any tips f or catching trout?
The weather was warmer then usual for this time of year so I think they are deeper and not as agressive. We just trolled with spoons and crank baits. The 2 lake trout were caught around midway down the lake. Others were having luck as well doing the same method but may have been deeper. So add weights to get deeper might help. But there are shallow sections the are around our site across to the other side of the lake is a fairly shallow sand bar and even washout weights I did catch some real-estate...
@@ontariooutdoorexplorer1201 Awesome thanks for the response. Will make sure we fish deeper than normal.
Good Luck! and Let me know how you did. Thanks for Watching.
Amazing video Doug. The shots of the moon are great. Thanks for organizing another wonderful trip.
Always fun my friend!
Doesn't seem to have a place to get out and rest during this paddle on the Oxbow. Difficult to paddle for 14kms without a lunch stop.
You are right there wasn’t anywhere to stop with out trespassing but the current is pretty consistent and it was only a few hours so could do in a morning or afternoon. I am not sure if there would be anything further past where we stopped that you could get out.
How did I miss this?!
Lol i guess I was stealthy….
try the tarp instead of the sticks. Faster.
I assume you mean make an initial mound, cover with a tarp and the add more snow? Never though of that, or seen anyone else do it. thats a great idea, Thanks will look at that next time
@@ontariooutdoorexplorer1201 check my video, the quinzee one.
lol, all you need to do now is to invite Steve Wallis and drink some beer in your front yard quinzee! not exactly stealth camping but it's close!
Ya that sounds like a great plan, Sadly the snow has already started to sag in on itself and I don’t think it is usable and we are to get rain this week… so much for winter. Thank for watching!
FYI, I hope you saw the root cellar at end of portage from Perley to Burntroot. The wavy lake didn't give you a chance to see the anchor on anchor island or the alligator on the western shoreline. Also, the portage from LaMuir to Hogan is wide because of the Canadian Federation of Anglers for their fisherpersons to cart their motor boats from Hogan to LaMuir. There is also a cart trail (road) from Big Crow to Hogan. Again, another good video. Also, I am glad you are using Jeff's map as he is a good friend of mine. LOL He and a friend started Unlostify and Jeff is still putting out quality maps. you have a new subscriber!
Thanks again, No I didn’t see the root cellar. I had hoped to see the Alana or but with the wind as it was and to be honest was a little wiped so wanted to get some rest in camp. Jeff’s maps a Great and I know Unlostify is working towards an Algonquin map. It has to be a ton of work to do. His original map is what I am still using for any planning for this coming season.
Petawawa River starts at Daisy Lake on the west side. Done your trip a few times and have started at least 1 trip from every access point over 56 years. Corbeil is a french name that is pronounced Corbay. My grandfather also died on the Pet on logging drive. Nice video that brings back the ole days.
Thanks, I have done most of my trips out of the 60 Corridor having grown up in Whitney. looking to do more for the North and west sides and have done only a few visits to the east side but did work in the park a few summers and worked on the eastern pines hiking trail
Nice video. Good bumping into you on your way out of the park, and thanks for the cut firewood. We used some, left some and at least left as much gathered but uncut for the next people to enjoy.
Thanks. Great to hear you got a site. Was busier than I thought it would have been. I always try and leave wood for the next group. Glad to hear you do the same!
