Welcome to the Hideaway

Welcome to the place we call the hideaway! This building has had many names… it has been called a workshop, shack, darkroom, photography studio, and drum assembly room. That is buck outlaw on the wall in the hideaway. He would say words like. “If you’re gonna be dumb, you got to be tough.” he’s my father; he was a fantastic craftsman! He passed away woodworking, doing what he loved! Buck helped...

How to sharpen a chain saw blade with a file (QUICK)
Being a former cabinetmaker and furniture builder, this is a fantastic video on the process of rehabbing a drum shell!
Hurts to see him put an emad and pinstripes on a kit like this, but I like the restoration.
the kit sounds great, really controlled sound
Excellent channel, very interesting, I learned a lot, thank you, subscribed
We booked The Hideaway to break up the drive from Florida to TN and fell in love with the property. We wish we were able to stay longer and will be back! The yummy lemon brownies were amazing!! ❤
Can’t believe my luck in booking the Hideaway! And hoo-boy that lemon brownie is a knockout, yessir.
Thanks for staying! 🤘🤘
nothing like a happy customer. cheers!
Hi...I have 2 mid 60's Ludwig kit's I'd like you to re-do the edges on...!...How do we hook up...?
Handsome Max❤
Cool information thanks
What's that big plate on the side of the tom?
Well golly! Love the accent eh,guess where I'm from?
My '69s have clear maple interiors.
Dig it!
Good sir, now i am stealing your design idea, thanks
Uhh,, two part epoxy thickened with fine saw dust! Make it like peanut butter apply it and it won,t run.
Amazing video:) beautiful place, I feel honored to be here. Your fathers legacy lives on❤I have only met Sylvia so far and already know I love you guys your dad as well. Thank you! Best Airbnb ever!
Thank you! 🤘
A amazing place
my ocd is triggered by the tilted Ludwig badge... jeeez... :))
putting the old heads on new sanded shells makes no sense, the drummer should get new heads for eye opening better sound now. the old heads were on the drums for years and have been molded by the faulty bearing edges; now making perfect edges means the old heads are not level anymore, and might actually sound worse than before. Had customers complain that they could not tune their drums after I fixed the edges, but that was due to the old heads being really messed up. New heads, and the drums sound better than ever. Drummers should realize this. Some think that keeping the original heads is actually an acomplishement, but jeeez...
@@adorodrums Agree 100% ☝️ Fresh new heads, properly seating those heads putting pressure in the center to get rid of the wrinkle and actually seat the edge. Tune by ear from there then use a tune-bot to be more precise and fast if you're into that
Some people like old shells with modern (doble 45) edges, but I personaly don't get it - I'd buy new drums instead.
well.. a lot of old Ludwigs had double 45 edges from the factory. I have a mint 1970 3-ply.. clean and somewhat sharp double 45 factory edges. But yeah, a lot of us like the worn out flat and round Ludwig edges... even though they are often way off the factory edges.
@@HR2635 Re-doing the edges is a must. Most of the times there's no need to use the router. 3-5 mm. wide flat edge might be finished (round over) by hand with no problem. And it becomes buttery smooth edge which follows the contour of the collar of the drumhead.
I normally build 8 lug snares because I dig the openness. I've been wanting to build a 6 lug 14" prototype so this video was helpful.
Bet that 13'd sound even better up a little higher.
the next time you go to flat sand the drums edge .... rub a pencil lead around the entire edge ... as you are flat sanding you can take a peak after a few moments to see if all of the pencil lead had been removed = FLAT !
How much for the ghost pedal that’s on on the shelf
its not for sale 😋
Really interesting Michael, thanks. Question: when you recut like you did, how much would you expect to take off from the drum? In other words, if the floor tom is 14" high and you recut the bearing edges, what would it measure afterward, 13.5"? Thanks.
its not that much. about 1/8-3/16 less per edge sorry just seen this!
One ply ambassadors gets the most free vibration giving the shell the ability to sing. Forget about multi-ply heads on vintage drums. Your taking away from the allure. Great vid
I used an old hoop on one rack tom on a newer model PDP centerstage kit, and even that made a difference. Some of the Roger's vintage hoops have less lugs too.
Fabulous work
i feel the pain, i'm a part time drum builder/restorer but may day job is running/maintaining a wood and vinyl fence fabrication shop. break downs and the scramble to fix them are a frequent occurrence lol
Nice! Love the drum stuff but this was interesting! Thanks
Thanks so much it was super fun to show every one!
Awesome!
Where do you buy your walnut can’t find other hardwoods in this area….
Hey Kelly! I had a whole tree cut up for me. Walnut is hard to find unless you wanna pay to pay 6 or more a board foot. How much do you need?
Ok yeah that’s pretty cool! Just always wanted to get some and use on a project
@@kcarr1021 guitar?
Wouldn’t that be cool 😎 but you know every body does those oak walnut dovetail boxes there cool
Come by the shop I’m sure I have some scrap wood you can have
Man, I need this shop!
German shepherds too ;) Great video. Thanks
Can't go wrong with those old Ludwig 3-ply shells. My '69 and '63 kits sound amazing for their age.
well.. you can go wrong.. actually quite a few of 60's 3-ply sound pretty bad. The good ones are amazing, the bad ones... ouch. I restore drums too by the way so I have had probably 30 ludwig 60's kits coming through. Never buy a 3-ply without hearing it first. Some of them have ZERO low end.
Great job! Wish you can recut my 1965 Ludwig drums.
Michael, you tell a great story and your Vlog could certainly be made into a reality show. But sweetheart, don't ever do the dumb ass chimney pull again.
Glad to see Keith is another "red Mustang" guy! I have a red '66 GT I share with my dad. Awesome drum Mike. Beautiful!
oh man! i love mustangs!! THANKS BROTHER!
