My name is Morad Chughtai. I'm an orthopedic surgeon here at Florida Orthopaedic Associates and I specialize in hand upper, extremity and microvascular surgery. It's essentially the full breadth and depth of anything that can happen to a patient from their clavicle to their finger. The hands are really important, and they work really well for a large majority of your life.
The hand is basically a direct extension of your brain and it's the end actuator of any of your thoughts. The first thing I do is I have the patient sit down and I just, I just listen to them. And I try to understand what their main problem is, how it's affecting their life, and what stage they are in their life.
A lot of non-surgical and medical issues first stem in the hand. So, people with numbness and tingling will come to me referred for a carpal tunnel. That could be from diabetes, and they didn't know that they had diabetes. So, something as simple as me listening to them and ordering a lab, can change the trajectory of their treatment. Make them aware of something that they didn't know about, that needs to be taken care of long term.
When you take care of people with hand problems, whether it be surgery or non-operative, the results from that are really impactful on a patient. Take somebody who has got a spinal cord injury, for example, and is dependent on others for their health, just by doing a nerve transfer or a tendon transfer can take them from being dependent to independent.
The amount of function gained by that patient and the quality of life that they get is really life changing for them. And that can be really rewarding. Just being with them, being by their side through the recovery process and watching the healing occur is really rewarding.
There hasn't been a hand surgeon over here and I look forward to being the hand surgeon that everybody can refer to. Patients don't have to drive a long distance or find a surgeon who's available because I can take care of them.
