In early June 2021 I was out in Durango Colorado to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This video features one of the railroads K-28's #473 out on the line and passing through locations such as Hermosa, Shalona Lake and Rockwood.

    It's wonderful knowing there's still a "Mudhen" out there, and burnin' coal. 👏 Its adorable! I am the proud owner of four HOn3 brass Westside Model Company K-27 steam engines. 😊

    Must've been deadheading her over to Antonito in preparation for the 1 July opening day. Typically the 463 can work Antonito to Osier without having to doublehead ...not going to happen too often out of Chama. The 489 (converted to oil) was working Chama to Osier By this time they'd gotten some good rains (the monsoons) to help reduce the fire hazard. I suspect there were a couple of fire speeders trailing the move as well.

    The 473 was originally a coal burner, but in late May 2021, it was converted to an oil burner. The D&SNG is converting 4 of their 8 operable steam locomotives from coal burners to oil burners, those being K-28 @/473, K-36 Nos. 480 and 482, and recently restored K-37 @/493. The ones that will remain as coal burners for now include K-28 Nos. 476 and 478 and K-36 Nos. 481 and 486, however, the 478 is currently out of service awaiting a future overhaul to go back into service again in the not-too-distant future. What a great choice for the fourth engine what better engine to convert to burn oil than the very locomotive that was traded with the previous K-37 to run on the Durango and Silverton number 497. 497 was traded to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad for K-36 locomotive 482 in 1992. 482 is iconic because she has a documentary of her rebuild called Rebirth of a Locomotive

    It’s very sad that this railroad use to run coal, just because of one fire, the whole atmosphere of the train of coal burning is gone forever. I’ll never ride this train again and smell oil burning. So sad 😞

    • @HematomaFalafalPatrol
      @HematomaFalafalPatrol 3 роки тому

      That's a remarkably petty reason not to support the railroad. And there are more reasons for the oil conversions than the 416 fire. Besides, coal smoke smells nice until it coats the inside of your nose and you can't smell anything...

      It has infinitely more to do than "one fire." It's about the railroad shutting down for an entire month because of said fire and then being blamed and sued over it. You can oversimplify it if you want, but the fact is that oil burners have a logistical advantage in a modern operating environment over coal burners.
