Girl in a Canoe is a channel created by Malia Zimmerman to highlight the Polynesian sport of outrigger canoe paddling. Malia grew up in Kailua, Hawaii, and learned to paddle and surf on outrigger canoes and surf skis at a young age. She's been fortunate to have many well known coaches including Denise Darval-Chang, head coach of Hui Nalu; Donna Kahakui, women's coach at Hui Nalu and Lanikai; Kamoa Kalama, head women's coach at Kailua Canoe Club; Bruce Blankenfeld, Canoe paddler and coach, Polynesian Voyaging Navigator; and his daughter Tia Blankenfeld; Steve Cho, Nani Kalama, Lindsey Richman, Kari Hirawa at Marina Outrigger in California; Tai Okamura of Waikiki Yacht Club; and John Puakea of Hawaii. She's taken a number of workshops from Tahitian and New Zealand paddlers.

I was out paddling on my Outrigger Canoe in Kailua bay January 7 and this baby humpback whale came to say hello. I was playing music on my phone and I think he was curious. Great video, thanks for posting. I have the same boat, I remember when my huli rate went below 50% of my outings, so satisfying to feel the progression and find myself bracing without even thinking about it.
Awesome! All we can do is try to get better each time we’re out there, right?! I love my kahele canoe. It’s 6-man season now, so I’ve been less on the OC1 and more at our team practice these last couple of months, but I am looking forward to getting out again on the kahele in the coming weeks.

I was trying to learn to fly my Ama before my birthday, and find that balance between having the Ama off the water and also not over my head on the other side. In the process, I definitely had my share of hulis!
