    I do like the equal and opposite torques picture. I think an easier way to picture this is by imagining you have a tensed up spring attached to the adjacent segments about the joint. They would tend to rotate the segments in the opposite directions. Then you can imagine the muscle replacing the spring and undergoing a concentric contraction.

      Great question! They are very similar but don't mean the exact same thing. Tropic hormones are hormones that act on another endocrine gland or tissue to cause secretion of another hormone. Trophic hormones are hormones that act on another endocrine gland, tissue, or cell specifically to affect the growth, function, or nutrition of the cells it is acting on. So both tropic and trophic hormones act on other endocrine glands and tissues, but tropic hormones cause release of another hormone and trophic hormones cause an effect like growth in the target gland.     If a muscle has a smaller internal moment arm would it have to produce more force to generate torque at the joint? For example if the internal moment arms of the lats decrease in a dumbbell pull over when the arms are over head would the lat muscles have to generate more force and work harder to produce torque at the shoulder joint and complete the movement?

      Yes, exactly. The more mechanically disadvantaged the muscle (shorter moment arm), the harder the muscle has to work to overcome the disadvantage by producing more force.

    Dang. Seems like there’s no simple method to avoid cortisol. What’s a good way to reduce cortisol production? I do my best to get enough sleep, and often wake up before an 8 hour block feeling refreshed and ready. Any tips?

      Hi there, a great way for most people to reduce cortisol is with exercise. To lower cortisol, the root of the problem needs to be addressed. If cortisol is high due to chronic daily stress (not an isolated situation), then exercise can help tremendously. When the body is chronically in a fight-or-flight state, good, hard, exercise can help the body "close the loop" on the stress response. Think of it like you are tricking your body into thinking that the stressful event is over by exerting physically like you would if you were fighting or fleeing from the stressor. If cortisol is high due to other reasons (besides chronic stress), then medical intervention might be needed. In that case, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor to determine the root cause and a treatment plan. I hope this helps!

      I looked into grounding. I watched grounding movie on UA-cam. I spend time on my lawn (no weed killer, etc) and I also use a grounding mat. I can’t do without it. It helped me lower my cortisol and sleep better.

      Hi there, thanks for asking. Not all stretching is an eccentric contraction. It is an eccentric contraction when the muscle is lengthening while it’s contracting, as is the case during the “stretch” phase of the stretch-shorten cycle.     Are internal moment arms the only thing that determines mechanical advantage? Are can things like the Length-tension relationship and muscle size also determine mechanical advantage? So if a muscle has a larger moment arm is smaller than a muscle that has a smaller moment arm but is larger could the body choose the larger muscle to perform the task as the size can compensate for the small moment arm and produce more force than the muscle with the smaller moment arm?

      Hi there! Mechanical advantage is determined simply by the lengths of the different moment arms. There are many factors that determine the forces acting at the different points on the levers (like muscle size, length-tension relationship, and so on), but it doesn't change the mechanical advantage. Each muscle will have a different moment arm at a joint since the insertions will be located at slightly different points, so different muscles will have a different mechanical advantage during different actions, which is part of what determines which muscle is the prime mover in an action. The many variables that factor into the amount of force a muscle can exert on the bone are what allow muscles to overcome their mechanical disadvantage (in the majority of cases). How much force a muscle produces doesn't change its' mechanical advantage, it just means that they are producing enough force to overcome the disadvantage they are at due to their moment arm.       Thanks for asking! Cerebral blood flow can be observed using cerebral perfusion imaging, carotid duplex, or cerebral angiogram. Cerebral perfusion imaging is done with an MRI, CT PET, or other types of imaging. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a specific type of MRI technique that is commonly used for measuring cerebral blood flow non-invasively, especially for TBI. Carotid duplex can be used to look for problems in the carotid (which would limit blood flow to the brain) using ultrasound. Cerebral angiogram is where they insert a catheter into an artery and inject contrast dye, then take an x-ray of the blood vessels. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
