Yes. Ok, she manages some passages well but over-forces the low register. Just listen to “del mio camin”, then refer to the same phrase in the 1959 Callas recording. No comparison whatsoever.

i went to Caballe’s final Vespri at the Metropolitan Opera and it was magnificent. One of the greatest performances I have ever heard in my over 50 years going to the Met. And of course the audience went wild with curtain call after curtain call. There is no one equal in the world of opera in 2024.

A few truths about the Caballe voice: at its best and in the right repertoire, one of the most beautiful sounds you could ever hear from a human being; in the wrong repertoire (e.g. that awful Phillips “Lucia”) a bit of a screaming machine; she had the most exquisite pianissimi of any singer; her top notes when sung forte or fortissimo were abrasive; her vocal line and cantilena were always beautifully controlled in the middle voice; the lower register and lower middle voice were hollow; she was incapable of coloratura staccati in altissimo; she had no real coloratura in altissimo, so her cadenzas in bel canto always seemed to have a low ceiling on them; her trill was more of a fake shake; she went on too long and sang well below her best in her final decade, almost to an embarrassing degree; her verismo roles in her prime showed her voice at its absolute best.

Si la memoria no me falla, he leído que Domingo no se encontraba bien en esta producción, y se saltó el aria en una de las funciones, mientras que Caballé lo apabullaba con sus calderones y fortísimos. De ahí y de La Africana vienen, al parecer, sus diferencias, aunque luego ella las atribuyera a que Domingo no quería cantar con ella porque estaba gorda, como si no hubiera cantado con muchas que estaban todavía más gordas. Aquí Caballé se sale y Domingo está más que apretado, pero en su disputa hay que reconocer que se comportó de un modo mucho más elegante que ella.

The pitch is off in this video. The first note should be D natural, and the final note a high C natural. The notes are a half tone higher than they were performed.

I am a passionate fan of La Superba and will defend her to the ends of the world but I do find her extreme high notes when performed forte a little much (especially post 1965) but I’m impressed she could achieve this so late in her career. The Orange Norma had to be the absolute crowning glory of her career. She never had a reliable Db and her C could be questionable post the 1960’s but I think here she still retained a hint of the glory of her heyday!

Of course is not a High E-flat. She never had that note. It is a top D. On the other hand, that note is not in the score but thanks Monsi for that great accomplishment. Your Lucrezia Borgia, as a whole, is simply incomparable in my humble opinion. A true diva of Bel Canto. R.I.P.
