I have been using the pond detox. Great product. Makes my fish want to feed even at 4 degrees
Great to hear mate
👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
Thanks for your comment 🥰
Another great and informative pod cast. 👍🏻 Can't wait to see Dave dressed up as 'Professor Science' 🥼🥽🤣
Us too! 🤣🤣🤣
Very good information. Another fantastic video. I’m learning so much about water quality.
Glad it was helpful!
Really good info for everyone, excellent stuff. Cheers 👍
Glad you think so!
When I kept KOI in Cheshire for several years, I was surprised by the calcium in the electric kettle, but once the water was circulated and mature, I didn't notice that much difference. Blanket weed, which is not found in Japan, similarly disappeared as the pond water matured. More crucially, the annual schedule of keeping there is still a mess and ignores the feeding period, and that has a great deal of room for improvement, doesn't it?
I think the main issue we suffer with Atsumi is water temperature. Here in the UK, if you don't have a heated pond you have a very small window in which you are able to feed the koi consistently due to our poor inconsistent climate. The same problem is the result of why we also have our koi shows when we do. If the dealers that attend and support the shows can't meet their margins, then there is no point in them attending. This would likely be the case as British people don't like journeying out in bad/cold weather and also don't tend to buy as many fish during the winter time. So whilst you are correct that the feeding period is interrupted in the UK, in all fairness the majority of UK hobbiests are lucky if they even get the feeding period started!😳 but all in all, due to the issues we face because of the points mentioned above, I don't see how the UK will ever alter in the ways that things are done.
@@UpNorthKoiPond Those are exactly the same answers that I received from Mr Waddington at the time. If you are fine with KOI as a consumable as it has always been, then there is no need to change it. However, in recent years, many people have expressed the wish to grow small tategoi to size and to bring them to maturity by themselves, in which case it is essential to set a complete feeding period. In recent years, Southeast Asian countries, including China, have shown remarkable growing and finishing skills that surpasses our own. From this point of view, you should be aware that these are the backword country, including Europe, which is not so enthusiastic about developing own KOI by yourself.
Atsumi San, you need to join us for a podcast!
Atsumi San, you need to join us on a podcast I think it would help a lot of people.
@@TheKoiPerspective Superb idea Joe…. 👏🏼 👍🏼
Please do one on ozone
Thanks, something I’m working on!
Loving these pod cast's lots of mostly easy to use information and some things that really make you think, well done guy's 👍. Gwen 🧓
Glad you like them!
Teabagging! That's an entirely different topic surely.. my money is on Dave being your in-house expert.. 👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Classic.
@ 🤣 loves Dave’s sense of humour
Very informative series of podcasts. Keep em coming Joe !
More to come!
Very interesting watch guys. 👏🏼 👏🏼 Andy helped me out last year and now having a Big blue from him has made a huge difference. 👍🏼 I am definitely going to try out the Complete Pond Detox this year too.
Good to hear!
Another great watch full of facts. Having an RO system made by Mr finch has been a game changer. When you see the difference between how koi look when you buy them in Japan only to see them loose quality in our water. It’s not just appearance but koi health that has improved as a result.
Thanks very much Andrew for your kind comment!
I have a baby blue I’m using the flow 1.8 litres per hour is the a good flow ?
Hey Mate, not sure on that one, may be worth giving Andy a quick call to ask!
@ could you please give me his website so can contact with him many thanks mate 🙏👌🎏🎏
www.finchfiltration.co.uk/
Thanks Joe. 1 hour show for an aid promotion for a product that I have yet to be shown of its effectiveness. I am disappointed that no one is showing tests of that product.
Huh? Have you gotten the right video Ivan?
The nasty after taste of tap water Andy is easily solved by heating the water and adding a teabag or 2,🤣🤣🤣
hahahah! I'm more of a coffee man myself!
I have also been having similar problems for the last 2 years or so. After listening to this I feel like I understand what’s going on a bit better. Keep the chats coming Joe.
I'm glad its of use to you Matt, part 2 next week!
Excellent, looking forward to part 2👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Is there a need for a big blue, if water keepers are using the likes of, Complete Pond Detox or a lacto bacteria?
The problem with that is that you put the chlorine in, cause the fish the stress then remove it. It’s about being proactive instead of reactive
@TheKoiPerspective Super Job. Can you envisage an issue with, ST'ing the pond*, topping up with rain/tap* water, then treating with a pond detox? Still viewed as reactive? Personally, I've been parasite free for years here on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, unheated with new additions over this time.. could I just be lucky?
No such thing as luck in Koi keeping, if you’ve been buying from the same dealer and the dealer has same breeders that could be contributing to a healthy environment
Hi Joe just love your passion for koi keep ing . Having been involved in the hobby with the Bkks in the 70s and with other early pioneers Notability Hilda and Eric Allen , Peter Wadington still plying his trade Dennis Wordsworth At Shirley Aquatics well into his 70s This was way before You Tube. This hobby has always drawn people who go the distance and beyond also the five minute wonders that have more money than any one .The people who use comesense and knowledge are the only ones who are going to take this hobby forward so we need more Andy Finches Paula Renyolds in an era when it appears more money than ever is being spent on bespoke koi pond high grade koi Filters Treatments for all manner of Parisites that appear to be around In the hobby today
Totally agree with you Jeremy, we are in a changing dynamic since the Covid-19 boom, a lot of people joined the hobby and have recieved mixed information from a vast amount of people with different opinions. That being said my ultimate goal is to put content out for people to do with what they like. I am not an expert by any means and wouldn't want anyone to perceive this podcast as that I'm trying to position myself as one either.
Hi Joe the content from your podcast was highly informative and l will be putting to use when l aim to have my koi pond after five years in the build in 2025
All the best Jeremy!
guess i have just been lucky. never had a problem getting rid of parasites with my shower, and not had any parasites for a couple of years. pond only 4 years old though? loving the style of these podcast. enjoying them
Thanks mate, alot of people out there run showers extremely successfully! as always its just preference
As a complete novice, I found this a great conversation! I now want to learn more about water quality and testing!
I honestly think nowadays we need to consider purification more vital than filtration, as stupid as that sounds!
Another great video full of info guys. Really helpful to all us novices out there. Please keep them coming 🙏
Thanks very much Paul, glad you’re getting some value from them!
Very interesting and informative. Andy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to water quality. I believe the late Peter Waddington said it best years ago "first you look after the water, then you look after the fish". (Quote may not be exactly word for word but you get the idea.) He was right. Looking forward to Part 2.👍🏻
Yes I agree with that statement!
Is our general Japanese perception wrong that the majority of chlorine and other harmful ions can be detoxified after treatment by aeration in a pre-tank without pouring directly into the pond?
A lot of UK hobbyists have had to close their ponds down over the years due to the water companies making the water worse and worse. I think it may be why so many keepers have problems with parasites and other issues, I’d like to try your method but some things like copper and metals I’m not sure you can detoxify with oxygen
@@TheKoiPerspective I've personally pointed out the problem of protozoan parasites, but isn't the fact that our Japanese method of controlling outbreaks by pre-disinfecting rather than killing them with PP or other chemicals once their presence is confirmed a major reason why this hasn't been widely adopted?
@@atsuminaoki9910 I absolutely agree with you on that, and something I have started to do in my own pond now.
These pod casts are so interesting and in-depth i will do my best not to miss one in the future, actually sit with a pen and paper because my memory isn't brilliant these days, invaluable information guys 💯 👍. Gwen 🧓
Glad you like them!
What a fantastic in-depth look into the water. This is an awesome pod cast Guys! I am learning sooo much. Can’t wait for part 2.
Comments like that make it all worth it, thanks Susan.
Andy is such a great and knowledgeable guy. Helped me understand what purification I needed and great after service, he’s an absolute credit to the hobby
I had the same experience with my personal pond, part 2 with Andy next week!
My kh from my tap is 16 My ph from tap is 8.9 My kh in pond is around 7.5 My ph in pond is 7.9 My tds is 600 in pond I do regular topping up but only what the nexus using with two boils and dumps 3 times a week 😂
So long as your fish are ok! Thats the main thing! Part 2 out next week!
@ cheers Jo was a really interesting topic picking Andy’s brain mate wealth of knowledge my fish are fine at the moment cheers pal
Another great Pod guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I agree with Dave on the size discussion it’s great to go big but it must be in balance, water volume, mechanical and bio filtration capability and as Joe said, if heating, related costs. When I built mine, Lau, James, Lee and others were all building and gave me loads of ideas of what I wanted and what I didn’t want. Keep up the good work guys 💪🏻👌🏻
UA-cam is a great platform for getting building ideas isn’t it? Thanks for the kind words
Surely you are blowing the chlorine collected out of your dechlorinator at that pressure ? Especially if u using same dechlorinator for a trickle in aswell 🦊
Hey Rob, what’s this in relation to mate?
In relation to the burst of water when cleaning the drum , if ur dechlorinator is being used as trickle in & ur drum every time it runs is surely blowing the chlorine out that has already been collect ? 🦊
Bcus flow threw that dechlorinator is so fast ? Only a thought 🦊
I think we meant that we weren’t pre-filtering the water and it wasn’t through the dechlor mate for the drum, atleast that’s how mine is set up
Ah right 😇 I don't run a drum , but when I finally get 1 I will certainly run cleaning straight from mains , as saves another pump that can go wrong 🙈 just making sure that not too much over spray goes back into pond 🦊
Cant praise aquaairation highly enough the vid i done on my channel of the easy pod upgrade is bight n day done me nexus two
Good products aren’t they?
@ 💯💯buddy gonna order the 220 ungrade on me new grow on when i av the money
Does anyone have a timer set up on their pump, so it goes off before feeding.
I thought about it for the skimmer issue Dave mentioned (Air Pump I presume you mean) but never got round to sorting it
@TheKoiPerspective I mean your water pumps, can these not be set on a timer to turn off just before feeding and then go back on 5 minutes after feeding?
Keep the good work up guys. Like the ldea of questions.
Send some in!! 😁😁
Nice one gents - Just building a new pond just under 30,000 litres ... pretty good debate .... and has given me food for thought. I have a bespoke aeration system from Brandon as you discussed in the podcast currently being built with the corner piece as you described ..... not convinced about bottom drain however have designed my own version - I am nervous about cocking it up at times however if I'm honest, but the ride has been exhilarating - had to sell a kidney to pay for it all. Only kidding !!!! Have gone for an XL Oase Proficlear premium XL filter system - overfilter as you suggested in episode 1 together with the Proficlear Premium Fleece system to polish the water..... when your down south ( Hampshire) feel free to pop in :)
sounds like an awesome pond and filter set up! - im sure you'll get it sorted. The aeration stuff from Aqua Aeration seems the bee's knees!
another good one! love these sunday talks 😁 I had air on my bottomdrain in my previous indoor pond. Had the same experience as Dave. The flow made a kind of votex in the pond and i was only getting big bubbles. My existing pond had normal bottomdrains, i have have taken the domes of, as Joe says it a huge flashpoint for the koi. Dave, about the airbar behind the skimmer. I made that on a timer, so every time the feeder goes on, the air at turns on and keeps the food away from going into the skimmer 😊
Glad you enjoy them as much as we enjoy making them! - more coming every week!
Congratulations Boys Amazing Video - love the banter - Just in the process of building a 30,000 litre pond on a wing and a prayer and you guys have highlighted every emotion I have gone through as a hobbyist - '' We don't keep koi we keep water'' is my mantra - Im so glad I caught you guys from week 1 ..... feel free to reach out if you want someone on who has jumped in feet first into the hobby since covid ( I'm on pond version 3) - with little or no experience but willing to give it a go and listen to some sound advice. I look forward to more content soon.
Well I’m glad we can be of service to you, we actually released a new video yesterday on some common discussions about what we would change about our ponds you might find useful!
Hi Joe!I'm sure your trip, including this one to Kyushu, was very worthwhile. If so, why don't you visit the Japanese hobbyists next time? Although you all discuss pond construction so seriously, you visit breeders, but no one has visited Japanese enthusiasts to inspect their ponds.
I would love to, I need to organise some time to do so! There are so much to learn from Japanese hobbyists
I could not agree more with Dave about bay filters
He’s not wrong!
👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Eyup Dave how’s those nylon trousers?
Big pipe work from bottom drain to filter and gravity fed is the way to go but each to there own. Fish will only grow to good water quality manual filter clean it every two weeks besides winter. Pays to salt a pond twice or three times a year any way just to keep your fishing looking banging 👍 ponds what are cladded in decking boards I love 😍
I agree with you there mate!
A good pound is above ground to save cost you can decide if you go for fibreglass or liner. Four foot is plenty deep enough un heated. Bottom drain good width and length for a good surface Area. All ponds in Japan are only four foot any winter over here your koi will be fine. Venturi a blade or six air stones in one of the back corners of the pond is fine. Best media for Baki showers is lava rock. 10 foot and above width for jumbo koi is the way to go really
Great points
Good that, cheers all 👍
Thanks Rich, hope you’re well mate.
I run multibay and great results
The ol’ reliable of koi filtration!
@TheKoiPerspective works perfectly just in the process of adding a bigger moving bed but no issues with the multibay at all cleaning is part of hobby for me that I enjoy
Very interesting point's of view and nicely done guy's 👍. Gwen 🧓
Thank you kindly!
Really enjoyed the pod cast. Looking forward to the next one. 👍🏻
Thanks mate, Andy Finch joins us on the next one!
Superb video gentlemen! Great conversation. 🫡☕️
Thanks Sid!
Great pod cast some really good info there I also have one bottom drain completely flat bottom 5 m long 2m wide also have a mid feed that can have a 4” oase flouting skimmer in but haven’t yet used it it was bottom drain to nexus mid feed to nexus then I took a nexus out replace with Cetus sieve it didn’t work out for me so now have mid feed to pump over a shower
Thanks Chris, not sure if you need the skimmer unless you have some form of debris entering the pond
@ I have loads of debris and dust but I dnt tend to use the skimmer anyway it all end up sinking and going through the drain anyway so it’s all good
