Our latest history documentary series begins with Episode 1, diving deep into the foundations of the Viking Age. 05:48 - DEFINING THE VIKING AGE AND ITS MISCONCEPTIONS
10:54 - BRONZE AND IRON AGE FOUNDATIONS

1:18:02 - CONCLUSION
In Episode 1, we step into the age of mythology, beginning with the Norse creation story, where Ymir emerges from the icy void, and the gods Odin, Vili, and Ve form the world. We’ll explore Yggdrasil, the great tree connecting the realms, and learn how Norse spirituality shaped life and death beliefs. According to Neil Price, a leading historian on Norse culture, the Norse mythology we’ll explore provides insights into the very foundation of Viking history.
But our journey doesn’t stop with the gods. We also reveal how Norse people lived and navigated their world, from Iron Age Scandinavia through to the Viking era. Vital to their survival were innovations in viking craftsmanship and Norse shipbuilding, giving rise to the legendary longships that enabled their seafaring culture. These Viking longships-known for speed and adaptability-allowed the Norse to expand their trade networks and explore lands as far as the British Isles. Such craftsmanship laid the groundwork for an era of exploration that set Vikings apart in Nordic history.
The Norse oral tradition also played a vital role in maintaining Viking values, as skalds (poets) recounted tales of bravery, honor, and resilience. From Loki the trickster to the epic battles at Ragnarok, these stories carried both cultural and spiritual weight, preserving the identity of Norse society through each generation. Our series, Storm from the North, isn’t just about Viking raids or Norse mythology; it’s about understanding how a complex, resilient people lived, traded, worshiped, and ultimately expanded.
📅 Join us from November 7th on for a history series unlike any other. Storm from the North goes deeper into Viking history and Nordic mythology, uncovering the reality behind the myths. We’ll explore Norse trade routes, paganism, and even the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok.
It’s a history documentary and Vikings series dedicated to giving you an authentic look at Norse life.Subscribe to our channel to join us as we bring Scandinavia’s legends to life. This Norse documentary series will transport you to a world where the lines between myth and history blur-a world where the Vikings lived and thrived. The Vikings are coming! There is debate over the existence of Hengist and Horsa. Vortigern is a title of a post not the name of a person moreover hengist means stallion and horsa means horse. Most historians these days consider these characters as mythical or legendary. Besides there is little to no physical evidence of their existence. So these stories are excluded from modern Anglo-Saxon historiography.

Sorry buddy, I missed your comment. It is hard to say who were they leftovers. Identities changed very quickly in that time, and we even do not know exactly how they saw themselves as we have no their own written sources. nice work mate.....more or less what u describe here are well known facts about the franks and their relations with the romans. just a few remarks that u may missed them in this video. childeric the father of clovis was burried as a highest roman official as roman imperial cloths were discovered in his tomb. also u mentioned something about the relations of clovis and the eastern roman empire (not byzantine) but u should also mention his acceptance of the roman title of patricius that emperor anastasius conffered upon him after he defeated the allamani in 507 ad. as for charlemagnes' coronation in 800 ad it was a clear sign that italy and the catholic church wanted no more to be ruled by nova roma = constantinople as they were from 476 - 800 as officially from 476 to 800 ad the eastern emperor ruled at least nominally the western empire as the western elites with the franks burgudians ostrogoths and the visigoths included recognised constantinoples' overlordship minting coins bearing the eastern emperors' name at least until sometime well in to the 7nth century......(heraclius' coins were founded at arles in 613 AD)

In the book, written by British historian Dan Jones, Powers and Thrones on page 61, it is stated, that there was serious invasion crisis in 367-8 called Great Conspiracy, because of troop mutiny on Hadrians wall. That was preceded by massive series of coastal raids by non- Roman aligned northern British tribes...But from the early fifth century on, Britain was steadily settled by warbands and migrant groups from North Sea area. There was no single, co-ordinated military invasion such as the Romans had landed in the time of Claudius, or the Normans would stage in 1066. Thank you very much for your comment. We are here to discuss history. Because history is no math, it has so many different aspects. If you are interested in Middle age history, I highly recommend Dan Snow book.

Hahaa, good point. I am not almighty. Actually we do not know how they did they look exactly. In all history books or videos we have to create pictures in some or another way. In older times painters did them, today in the times of AI, AI is creating them. But it is good point. I have the same problem, when I was in the first year of my history study at university. And professor for Medieval history, now late dr. Janez Percic (maybe some Slovenian fellow historians will remember him), take us to watch movie Jean d Arc. And after the movie, I was... loool, no way, that she was so beautiful in real life as was Milla Jovovich in that movie... So, I really like your point, but I do not have clear answer to you. Firstly, we do not know how exactly did they look like, and secondly, if we are making movie, we have to make visuals in one or another way.... Really thank you for your comment.

Hi, I’m Europeanhistorian, and I’ve been teaching history for over 20 years in Primary school. For most of that time, I’ve been fascinated by the Middle Ages and the events that led up to it. I have always liked reading about the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the barbarian tribes and kingdoms they create. With the emergence of new technologies that enable us to create faceless youtube channels ( I am a shy guy for the real camera;) ), I decided to create a youtube channel and cover the whole history of the Middle Ages. I know some of you, let's say “old school youtube guys and girls” do not like faceless channels, but it is what it is. Sometimes we have to take advantage of new technologies, even if we like and explore “old things” that happened a long time ago. Please comment, what you like and especially what you dont, because this will help me to improve future videos a lot. Should I go more in-depth? I would be very thankful for any advice about video making, as here I am a total beginner. I never make and edit videos until now. So, subscribe to the channel and help me create a comprehensive guide to European Middle Ages as this is really great period in European history. Just total history, nothing to sell to you,

Hello, thank you very much for your comment. In my last videos I strictly use AD, as I think that Anno Domini is most appropriate for Middle Ages. At the beginning of my channel I was overhelmed by editing and all that stuff, so I was not put too much attention to the detail. Thanks for the comment and I will do my best to use only AD...

It is a mixture of legends, and the authors desire vision but are not supported by evidence. The history of Alfred the Great seems to be copied from the history of Cnut the Great which is supported by many historical documents.

    • @Europeanhistorian

In that period all histories have problems with sources. I came from Slovenia, our lands in the Early Middle Ages were settled by different Slavs tribes, and we do not have any written documents by them. So, everything we know about them is basically from two outside documents. One is Paul Diacon History of Lombards and other is Conversio Bagoarium et Carantanorum, which talked about Christanisation of the Slavs and Bavarians. So, all these histories are some kind of desire visions. Thank you very much for your replay.

@@Europeanhistorian I like your tone of voice and the audio is great... Also the pictures. Just try to change a bit the motion... I'll send you a channel that the guy does a bit of the motion, but in a way that doesn't give head ache. But please keep doing the videos... You'll get better at editing the videos. Other than that, the content is really great! Check his videos editions: Middle ages madness.

@@brusamp Thank you very much mate. I really appreciate your help. As I said, I did not know anything about the editing, so I understand that motion of the video is not good enough or can be annoying to someone. I have almost finished video about the Anglo - saxon period and I used same techniques as in the recent videos but I will sure study some other motion techniques when I start new video about King Alfred the Great tommorow.

As a HUN-garian we are all descendents of the HUNNIC EMPIRE of ATTILA the Magyars and the Huns were related as blood brothers!! After Attila most Huns settled in East Europe by the KARPATHIAN MOUNTAIGNS in TRANSYLVANIA!! That area was part of the KINGDOM of HUNGARY for almost a 1000 years!! Today sadly its part of ROMANIA!! Thanks for this excellent Historic video reflects more the HUNS and not so much their leader ATTILA!!!
