Hello, my name is Jay, and I'm just someone who loves outdoor adventures, and great scenery. Although I have had an account on UA-cam and have been watching videos for several years, I just recently (2020) decided to start making my own videos. I happen to live in an area known for great scenery and outdoor adventures (East Tennessee), and I've enjoyed others' videos showing us all great adventures around the world, and figured, I could learn to do this too, so here goes...

Strange Experience In The Smokies
About 2 years ago I had an unusual experience in the Smokies and pretty much kept it to myself......until now.

Parson Branch Rd - Revisited - July 2022
Переглядів 3692 роки тому
I decided to go back to Parson Br Rd to compare the road condition from May, when the road opened, to now, to see if the conditions had changed. Sorry about the music and subtitles, but I had family with me this time, and there were too many conversations going on, and it was just easier to edit that out.
Parson Branch Road - IS OPEN!

The wait is over! Parson Branch Rd is finally open, and I take us on the road, which has been closed for several years. This video is a full length drive through, unedited, so you can see actual real time required to make the trip. The road is accessed from Cades Cove, and drops you out in the Tail of the Dragon on US-129. Enjoy!

It's such a beautiful spring day, and I just had to get out and enjoy the day for a little while! Join me on an unplanned ride that ended up taking us through parts of Maryville, Wears Valley, Townsend, Walland, and the Foothills Parkway. Great views of the Great Smoky Mountains!

This must be one of the best Christmas lights displays that I have seen in a long time. I believe this is my first night time video. I'm fairly satisfied with my camera, but not so much with my handling of the camera. It's a learning process that never ends. I hope you all enjoy the video and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the info. I go to Cades twice a year at least for the last 10 years. I have never seen it open. I look ever time. My hopes are still up!
@@michaelmartin5975 I hope you have a great experience when you get the chance to go!
Thank you for the ride. It was wonderful. 🤩
New subscriber and loving your videos. Great content!
Enjoyed this, thanks for posting!
Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks for the beautiful drive!
Thanks for watching!
New subscriber here! Thanks for posting this. My husband and I have been tempted to take this road several times but haven’t because we didn’t know for sure how bad it was and whether or not we could make it in a car. We drive a Kia Cadenza and I don’t think I’d be comfortable going through the water crossings in a car. It looked pretty swift at some points! I think we’ll wait until we get our next vehicle which will definitely be 4WD! We’ve traveled Rich Mountain Road several times with no problems but this looks much worse! Enjoying your videos…thanks again for posting!
It’s definitely not a road I would travel without at least an AWD suv with a bit of ground clearance. The water crossings could be as little as a puddle, or more like you saw in the video. It all depends on how much rain we’ve had. Thanks for checking out the video!
Is this on Rich Mountain Road?
Yes, it is.
Scary experience. It’s not crazy at all. You hear people having those experiences often and especially in those mountains. Great video.
Thanks, but you’re pretty much obligated to be nice to me 😉.
@@SilverWolfAdventures , haha. Well, I don’t have to be but you’re pretty awesome so it’s easy to be nice to you.
Nothing crazy at all. I think we all have faced similar experiences and always they are scary
Thanks for checking out the video, and for the comment too.
Jay, I am thankful that the LORD was watching over you and keeping you safe that day. ✝️😊
Hi Jay! So good to see you again my friend. I missed seeing videos from you. That was a strange experience indeed!! I wonder what or who it was? Joy sent me a picture of you, and Tab with her and Donny and Will and Dawn. It was a very good picture and I am glad to have it. Stay safe and God Bless..
It’s good to hear from you. Take care.
Good to see a video from you....Very strange encounter!
Thanks for checking it out. It was very strange. I had that feeling of being watched right up until I left that area.
it was great seeing you and Tabitha last night with our other friends
We had a great time too and enjoyed getting to see everyone again.
Fyi I just did this today (8/12/23) in my 2021 subaru crosstrek sport. Within the first mile or so there is a hefty incline that was very muddy with deep divets. Had to turn my xmode on and almost couldnt make it up. But my Subie was a trooper. The rest of the road was good. Just had heavy storms here the past few days and maybe thats why the conditon of that portion of the road was bad and torn up. Until this portion dries or gets the holes filled, don't attempt without 4WD or AWD and ample ground clearance. The AWD, xmode for off roading, and just under 9 inches of ground clearance are the ONLY reasons I didn't get stuck.
Thanks for the update. I know which hill you’re referring to, and I was wondering if it got worse there yet. I’m glad you made it through there ok, and hope you enjoyed the ride!
Is there a gps address to get to this road? Thanks
Not that I’m aware of. As you enter the Great Smoky Mountain National Park from the Townsend, TN entrance you will come upon a T intersection. Turn right there, towards Cades Cove, and continue straight until you are actually on Cades Cove Loop. Once you’re on the Loop, you’ll travel about halfway around the 11 mile loop and you’ll see the only restroom stop on your right. At that point stay straight onto the dirt road. Parson Branch will turn right off of that dirt road just before that dirt road ends.
You enter off of Forge Creek Road. I don’t know if it still is, but it used to be closed November-March.
Great video! im wondering if there are any sharp drop-offs on this drive? I couldn't really tell with the foliage. I have serve vertigo and get dizzy in the mountains if there are.
Thanks! I can’t think of any real sharp drop offs. At the very end there is a short stretch where you can look down toward the water, but it’s not like a straight drop off at the edge of the road. My mom has issues with vertigo and she loves the ride up Tremont.
@@SilverWolfAdventures Thank you so much. Will be heading out to enjoy it in morning. Was going to attempt Rich MTN road but found out is was closed due to issues with a bear
@@beerlover5000 Hope you have a great time!
Is that one way up and one way down?
Yes, it is a one way road. You must enter from Cades Cove Loop and end on U.S. 129
Looks like it is in much better condition than the 2 times that I drove it. The first time I drove it, I took a hatchback. A mistake.
Here now in Gatlinburg, just left cemetery at elkmont , now gotta go to the sinks
That’s great! Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip!
Differently doin this the next trip to Gatlinburg. Coming out the end right or left to head back the way to Gatlinburg
Turning left will take you towards Fontana Dam in North Carolina. You will want to turn right. You’ll go about 8 miles or so (not sure exactly, but that should be close) and you’ll turn right onto the Foothills Parkway. At the end of the Foothills Parkway you’ll come out on Wears Valley Road which takes you back into Pigeon Forge. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@SilverWolfAdventures okay cool. Once I’ve hit Wears Valley I’ll know where I’m at then. Stayed at lot of cabins up in there.
My friends and I want to take our gravel bikes up this road, but have heard stories...we are comfortable with Rich Mountain, but haven't been up here yet. I was going to do this very drive for recon, thanks for saving me the trip! Not so sure about all those water crossings, but the road seems OK.
Thanks for checking out the video. Last season the water crossings were almost nonexistent as the weather got hotter and drier. I haven’t had the opportunity to get back out there this season yet. Safe adventures!
Just rode on parsons branch road this past Sunday in my 2023 Tacoma trd offroad truck. I had a blast.
Glad to hear it! I haven’t had the opportunity to get over there yet this season. I would like to get over there again before the water crossings dry up again.
So Peaceful back there! Wow. Thanks for letting us see the whole journey and not just an abridged version as other videos show; that helps everyone judge whether or not their vehicle could make this trip safely. But the key is how much rain there's been recently, because several days of downpours (or even just one very heavy recent downpour) could much more heavily flood out stream fords and add more mud than seen here.
Thanks for the comment, and for checking out the video. I hope to make it back out there soon to see the current conditions.
I know those roads
The last time I took this road was in 1984, it was nowhere this well maintained, lots of ruts and holes. It was closed for years due to storm damage and has only been open intermittently since then, it is closed in the winter.
They did a lot of work on it to get it ready to reopen last year. It’s a seasonal road and will reopen next month, around the second weekend in April, I believe. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@SilverWolfAdventures We are visiting in May and plan to travel Parson's Branch and return to Pigeon Forge via the west end of the foothills parkway. Have you traveled the Rich Mountain road, it is a good ride that takes you over to Townsend.
@@fredericktaylor2891 Rich Mountain Rd is always a nice ride too. Have a great time on your travels!
Love your videos ! I was wondering if you have driven parsons branch road lately? If so how's the condition of it ? It stormed real hard not long ago and I've heard it's rutted up real bad ....
Thank you for the kind words. Parson Branch is currently closed for the season, and scheduled to reopen around April 14th I believe. The last time I had a chance to drive that road, shortly before it closed for the season, it was still in pretty good shape. It only had a couple of spots that were getting a little rough, but not too bad. I plan to try to hit that road again as soon as it opens. Thanks again for checking out the videos!
@@SilverWolfAdventures I finally was able to make it up from Hendersonville ,TN and drive Parson Branch. The videos you posted last season really help me prepare. Although it was rough... we had an awesome time. I also drove tail of the dragon of course... and upper tremont road. I have videos posted of parsons , the dragon and Im currently working on tremont. Were already planning another trip for next year. Thanks again for the driving vids.... keep up the great adventures ! -GLENN
@@GlennsHardWired I’m glad you had a great time! I’ll be sure to check out your videos!
Time for a quick ride on the gravel bike! I have hiked this before but have never driven it.
Great video! I'm planning my trip in May and can't wait to take my new Wrangler through there. Thanks :)
What state is this in
This is in Eastern Tennessee. The entrance to this road is a little bit outside of Townsend, TN. Thanks for checking out the video!
Did this in my forester wilderness last summer as a short cut to TOD. Loved it
Thanks for a nice ride up. I remember sitting in high school gazing out the windows watching the highway being built. I still take a few rides up every year even though I drive by it several times a week plus it’s free now so even better. Nice to see someone else’s perspective as they enjoy part this wonderful area.
Thank you for checking out the video and for the kind words!
I’ve been up that road dozens of times on dirt bikes and snowmobiles. At the old reservoir where you turned around, you have barely started up it. It goes to the top of Prospect Mtn. It was the service road for the fire tower that used to be there. In the fifties and sixties you could drive a car most of the way up. The last top sections were a bit steep and required 4 wheel drive. It comes out in the back section of the parking lots for the highway. A few years ago i hiked up a ways and it’s a shame it has not been maintained enough for vehicles. It’s a great way to get up to the top. Good video. Brought back many memories. Thanks.
Thank you for the info and for checking out the video! I remember hiking up Prospect Mountain back when I was a teenager. I never knew about this road going all the way up the mountain in the past. Thanks again!
Happy to help. Next time you ride up the highway as you enter the parking areas go to the right towards the SAC towers that you’ll see up on the ridge. If you walk along the edge of the lots you should be able to find the old exit of Big Hollow rd. If you go to the highest section on the rocks at the top, you can find the anchors and base for the fire tower. I remember going up it and visiting with the fire ranger several times as a little kid. Hiked up BHR to get up there that was before the Northway was built. Got some nice vids to watch. Keep it up 👍.
Am I crazy for thinking I can take my BMW 5 series out here and do this? I wanna have it there for the Tail of the Dragon. This just looks like a dirt road basically. A few water crossings but it looks easy.
I’m pretty sure the 5 series would make it. I’ve seen a few Subaru Outbacks on the road and seemed to do ok. Keep in mind the road is now closed for the season and will reopen in spring.
I’m planning to take this kind of road with my jeep and my son’s silverado this thsnksgiving. Where this road will end and how many miles drive? Any words? Thank you
This roads is about 8 miles long and end up on US 129 (also called the Tail of the Dragon). It is not open year round, however, and I believe it will be closed around the 14th of November this year. It will reopen in the Spring. Thanks for checking out the video, and best wishes to you and your family!
what city near and state?
This is near Townsend, TN
I miss living in east tn this time of year. Great video thank you
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow, excellent video! I think I went through there about 25-30 years ago. So nice to see it’s still as beautiful now. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Godspeed sir!
Thank you for checking it out! Take care!
Great video! 😊
Thanks!
Great Video Jay!! Great to see another video from you. The scenery is absolutely beautiful! There is no place better than the smoky mountains. You know how much I would love to be there right now. Is that Parsons Branch Road and tail of the dragon that you and Tabitha were on? It was very quiet and pretty. This was wonderful! Thanks for the enjoyable ride and for taking me "back home".
Yes, part of the video was recorded on Parson Branch. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words!
Beautiful fall ride! I am missing the Smokies! I hear them calling!
@@taradalmatianshaver6828 ME TOO TARA !!!!!
@@SilverWolfAdventures you are welcome Jay. 😊 God bless you both.
@@smokymountainman4964 we will head back one time before the end of the year
years back it was more of a challenge, maybe they never changed the warning signs?
That could be true. My guess is that they had to fix the road to get the trucks in there that they used to clean out the dead trees, and that there will be little to no maintenance done to the road itself now that the trees are cleaned out, and it will get more challenging as time goes on.
I love this video
I love these kind of videos. Thanks for the effort it took to do. This month I'm going to take my FJ Cruiser down that there road! Hope I don't meet oncoming traffic...
its supposed to be one way
Thank you for the kind words. It is a one way road, so chances are slim of meeting oncoming traffic, unless you encounter someone that just blatantly disregards the signs. Your vehicle should do well, and I hope you have a great time!
Very nice video Jay! 😃 You and your lady take care! 💞
Jay So glad to see that you have another video out. I always enjoy riding along with you on your adventures. Thanks for taking us back to your home. It sure looks like a beautiful area as well.
Jay I might have told you this before but my brother used to live on Lake George in New York not to far from Ticonderoga
Are you going to tell us legions about feral people that’s supposed to be around?
Ummm….no. I find those stories a little hard believe.
If I can ever get back to Cades Cove I want to take this drive. I have permission from the park to have my ashes put in Cades Cove. Restrictions apply of course.
Simply beautiful
Where is this in Tennessee?
This is in the Smoky Mountain National Park off of Cades Cove Loop. East Tennessee, almost bordering North Carolina.
