Restore it and put it alongside the USS Intrepid in NY as a Maritime museum,then little by little put replicas and recreations of Ships from past centuries….it could the Disneyland of ancient Ships….

Such a good-looking ship. hard to think it was built in 1972, I always want to think all it needs is a new engine. I imagine the hull is pretty worn out and the parts harder to come by.

I find this surprising as it was announced the Gilliland was waiting to be drydocked after the New Jersey left drydock.

My dad Was on the Shreveport for a meu he was on it when it ran aground in 2000

This was my first command when I joined the Navy. She was the reason I stayed in and chose the BM rating. Miss her dearly and sad to see her get scrapped. I wish Yorktown, Va would have taken her as a museum ship. RIP CG-48.😢. My time was 1994-1998.

So sad...she looks old and worn out when she was once so full of life. I was part of the commissioning crew on Nicholas...and now I feel REALLY old.

I was a Marine afoat on WesPac out of K-Bay, I think around 1980. Best chow by far of any gator ship I was ever on!

Makes me sick to see this class of warship being cast aside.

Good morning and Happy New Year. I HAVE SOME VERY VERY BAD NEWS. PLEASE READ!! Court date set for Tuesday January 16th at 8 am Philadelphia courthouse. Please go there and help😢😢.. The SS United States is facing serious and immediate threats. The vessel’s landlord, Penn Warehousing, doubled the ship’s rent during the coronavirus pandemic and has sued the Conservancy, demanding back rent and the removal of the ship from the pier. The Conservancy has been unable to secure an alternative berth, and a trial is scheduled in mid-January. An unfavorable judgment would devastate the Conservancy and likely compel us to relinquish control of the vessel. The Conservancy’s board is now evaluating various contingencies on a very tight and demanding schedule. If Penn Warehousing wins a judgment against the Conservancy, the SS United States may have to be scrapped.

I was station on that ship back in 90. Part of a Marine detachment.

I did a lot of work on their 16V-149 genset's while they were at anchor in Ibiza, Spain while attached to USS Shenandoah AD-44. Must've been summer of 1989, I think.

I was stationed aboard her just a bit before her first birthday; still had that new ship smell. Last of her kind. Sort of sad to see her go but all good things...

I was on this ship from 73-76 we spent much time in other countries. I started in the boiler room then to undesignated electrician E-3 where I spent many hours at the electrical switchboard in the engine room. My Capt was Warwick, we were getting supplies by cable from another ship, after we transferred needed supplies we performed emergency break away. Our captain was renamed after he ordered too much left rudder so we collided and left out antennas on the other ship and we got some extra catwalk. he was called Captain Crunch from then until he left about 6 months later. I enjoyed my short Navy life.

i served on the nashville fro m 1976 - 1981, best times of me life. HT2 hine.

I helped build this ship. I was the final QA for the radio room before it went to the shipyard for the build. Wow I’m freaking old.

back in 2013, i deployed with the San-Jac in our strike group. it was us (USS Bulkeley), USS Mason, USS Gettysburg, USS San Jacinto, our CV USS Harry S. Truman, and our Sub USS Dallas. San-Jac certainly was a beautiful cruiser and my ship unrep'ed with her simultaneously a couple times.

Spent a few nights on this one back in 2012 or something like that. I want to say it was docked either in Norfolk or New Jersey, can't recall. I was in the reserves and we went there for some training assignment. Still have my cap. Although I have never been out to sea, I spent 8 years in the reserves. Good times for sure. Got to see Hawaii too. Oh, the stories.... ;)

Great Video! Do these tugs stop to refuel on these trips? How about the towed vessel is there anyone on board to monitor for any issues whilst under tow?

The money that goes into dull skyscrapers that dull our cities should suely be able to be spared to bring this glorious ship back to her original shape. Imagine the 2 buildings on the 2 opposite docks -one as a museum style departure building with additional exhibits etc and the one opposite with period style cafes and restaurants to overlook the mighty ship .It would be a great drawcard for the city of Philadelphia . Constructed in the real style of that grand era-1940s and 50s. It's popular again and being done in most cities and it was SO AMERICAN then! As a footnote-Its grand seeing the old Queen Mary being so well restored at the moment -I wish that the land immediately onshore might be developed with as much good taste.

i rode on her to afghanistan in 2001. great memories on the gator! we actually landed in pakistan. rode back home on her in 2002.
