I have very similar experiences. I've personally mostly been buying specialized collections the past few years. I feel like over paying for stamps is something that most collector's do.... And many resellers as well. I've been on a show or two lately on whatnot of a guy selling tubs of stamps and unfortunately 90% is junk, resellers are the main bidders, and these buyers have no idea what they are doing or bidding on. Though it's nice to have some sellers on there..... It hurts when things are overpriced as it creates resentment in the stamp category... Which I'd love to be much bigger than it is. I guess it means I have to have more shows and keep costs low. 😎🤔

Thanks for the comment, and I can assure you I've seen many more than 600 varieties of single stamps and upwards of 2100 varieties of a single Canadian stamp which supposedly have almost no varieties. It's fine to disagree, but these are from true philatelists, specialized estates, and award winning historical collections that many top people have examined, including my mentor, the late Kasimir Bileski from Winnipeg. The varieties of the stamps we've encountered when dealing with Specialized estates is incredible. When talking about variety, much like all stamp and philatelic material, it's subjective, and biased in most cases, I may not agree with the variety selection myself however these collector's spend endless hours studying them. Your opinion in having just 23 varieties may be as stated in a catalogue or what you've enjoyed collecting. When speaking of the KGV variety of over 600+ I was referring to a specific collection from Victoria, BC that had more than 600+ varieties, including everything from errors, re-entries, ink pulls, types and dates of printing, printing types, ink sheen's oxidations, and color variations, sheets and block variations, specialized usage post marks and various proofs. For that specific collection it was over 600 in the 2 albums with write-ups on nearly all items. I hope that makes sense. Keep collecting fun and try to find the joy of philately. As a collector of U.S. stamps for 50 years now, I have to agree with you. They didn't make hundreds of different plates for early stamps and I don't count the slight changes to an aging plate as a different variety. If you want to count errors made to an aging or damaged plate as a variety and you've spent years looking for slight changes in plates and color batches then perhaps you might be that one person that has every possible variety. But that doesn't mean anyone else will consider your variety anymore valuable than the standard ones listed in a catalog. These days I've noticed price catalogs reducing their listing of varieties due to lack of interest.

Many hundreds yes.... And would love to downsize and get rid of our 15 x 20 storage unit full as well....

You can buy them on eBay or Unitrade websites. Some dealers will sell boxes full of lightly used albums for a hundred dollars or so.

Not sure about the question ❓ but stamps market value really depends on rarity, quality, and demand much like anything. Hopefully we can preserve this wonderful hobby and paper that goes into it.

Go to the local library and check out the Scott Standard Catalogues. There are 12-13 volumes and country specific in the specialized catalogues. You can see if the Library has Stanley Gibbons catalogues as well. Remember that most items if you're good, sell for roughly 10-20% catalogue value on the world market (eBay or Hipstamp or similar).

Unfortunately you might be right. We sell box lots everyday for roughly $50-100 and better unpicked estate stuff for $500-3000 depending on the material which is about as good as this market has become.... it's fading out quite quickly. More than 1/2 our inventory now has moved to the Sports Cards and other collectibles markets. We have slowly over the last 3-4 years started phasing out buying too many philatelic collections unless they are super Specialized. We're moving into other markets and materials. We love stamps but the future of our business is likely to move away from the Philatelic world..... Stamp Pickers Auctions is a subsidiary of Estate Pickers Auctions our company, so we have many options which is a good thing. Many stamp sellers and dealers don't have those options and hopefully won't fade with the market.... To be truthful, anyone that's still doing it must enjoy it and love it as a hobby which is what I'd suggest....

The best way to see if it's working on whatnot is to do some love shows. Our first show with stamps was fairly unsuccessful however the Sports and Non-Sports card market was great on our last few shows.

The postcards will do great as I've been on several shows lately that did well.

Seems like you have more knowledge than I do. We appreciate the comment however please don't be misinformed. We've only done just over 8 figures in online sales in the last two decades including approximately 1/2 being of philatelic nature. So after over 800,000+ successful online transactions, over 2 decades in business, we have it down to a science and there's not much I haven't learned, seen, or know in the philatelic world (though there's always much more to learn). It would appear you're more experienced and have more sales so my audience should follow you. If this is the case, tag me in your next video.

I disagree with you at 10:30 mark of your video. A FDC is a stamped post card and/or enveloped with a first day of issue dated cancellation over the stamp, whether it is addressed or NOT.. Officially, an unaddressed FDC cannot be reused as an unused stamped envelope because the stamp is cancelled, although an uninformed postal employee may accept a reused FDC. Basically, any markings on the face of the stamp other than the ink from the printing of the stamp will be deemed as a cancelled stamp, thus the stamp cannot be used as unused postage. Think of this scenario, you found some old crumpled and dirty stained stamps in the back of your drawer desk, and you affix the stamps to an envelope, you may find your letter be returned back to you as insufficient postage or improper stamp usage, all because the stamp looked like it was reused and prior cancelled. However, in philatelic terms, that crumpled stained dirty stamp will be classified as UNUSED collectible, but the postal service will classified the same stamp as cancelled and invalid for future postal use for mailings.

I do contract work for Canada Post Corporation, and some consulting as well. I can assure you that they will accept these FDC's as Unused, pre-paid envelopes. I even have a memo from the director stating to allow them through as the philatelic clubs/societies went to the board of directors about the subject some time ago.... And took a few years to finally get a response.... But they can be used and sent through the Canadian postal system. I can't speak to other countries but I'd assume it's similar. @@coryledoux8536 ...You are absolutely correct on "unused" FDC stamped envelope, but in your vid at the 10:30 mark you held up a "used" /cancelled stamp FDC (although still unaddressed), and said that this example could be used for future mailing which would be wrong. Any stamp whether it is on or off envelope will be considered invalid for postage use.

I'd love it if you would sell some stamps. The world and especially North America needs more stamp sellers.... In fact the better stamps do quite well on whatnot, however selling a stamp that has a catalogue value of $.25 for $800.00 (which we've seen lately) is deceptive and if you're part of any philatelic organization, would get you kicked out as it's considered unethical. I'd be glad to give away a bunch to that person who is selling them or anyone considering buying them to help them understand the market, value, and rarity of these beauties. @@coryledoux8536 wonder if the same stamp club would throw a member out for selling any stamp dirt cheap . I find it hard to appreciate anything marked" RARE " BEING SOLD FOR A DOLLAR. I hope this mentality stays in stamp collecting and doesn't spread into numismatics . . Though I wouldn't mind it spreading into the car business I'd totally be down to buy a classic muscle car for $500 bucks

We use high quality 23+ megapixel semi-pro photos. For whatnot a phone pic (modern smartphone) would be perfect. The new iPhone or Pixel phones do an amazing job for pics and video. And yes you just take pics and post them or you can go live on whatnot. Check it out.

Again... It pains me to watch someone trying to sell mint 4-blocks or common singles by the piece and get no sales.... Or worse, they get someone paying $10 for one.... It almost always leaves a bad taste in the buyer's mouth when they realize they can buy dozens, and sometimes hundreds for $10.... It turns them off platforms and items they don't know much about. I respect them for wanting to collect but I'd love to give those people some value and share some upcoming shows as how things should sell.

This is what I'm trying to help people avoid..... Once stamps take off on apps like Whatnot and we do high volumes there, buyer's will understand the value better. As for eBay, I don't bother letting them know anymore, I just add a few hundred of each to a lot and it seems to sell quite well.

Hello, we don't have any certification issues??? certification isn't required for most regular stamp collections or medium value items. We sell hundreds of estates and collections that don't have certificates. We only certify or buy certified items in the thousands of dollars per piece range. We specialize in British North American issues and can certify/expertize them with a few of our colleagues, however we use various organizations for many foreign issues. To be straight, certified stamps and sets is a very old fashioned and romantic idea that will go away eventually. The only certificates that will matter are the top values and issues which will likely transform to slabbed, graded, or very rare items that end up fractionally traded like the World's rarest stamp. Fractional trading of the most expensive issues in the world will be the future of collecting. I'm not sure this helps with your questions but I hope it does.

I had a very similar experience when first collecting. I was even more discouraged when the local club members started ripping me off and trying to "school" me on collecting stamps or postal history. Luckily I can now "school" them, based on 9.5 million in sales and close to 500,000 transactions of philatelic nature.... And almost double that in all collectibles. It's a goal to help collectors keep the joy in the hobby rather than negative experiences. Thanks for commenting.

I sometimes buy out dealers and very large collections. However I do work with local antique dealers and auctions to get them yes.

If you don't have an eBay account then it's quite easy to set one up and start selling.
