Stasis is a card that many prison decks are built upon, hated by many. In this Premodern deck we turn our extra cards into mana by using Forsaken City and untapping lands while our opponent is not able to do so. We also take advantage of the original Alpha cards, Howling Mana and Black Vise, defending the combo with blue alternative cost cards from the Mercadian Masques block counter magic and efficient draw spells.

This was really good. Just what I've been curious about for years. I even tried to find it a few times and couldn't but now finally well done. I remember playing with 4 strip mines, 4 berserks, with kird apes giant growths unstable mutations and Black Vice and it was way too good. I thought Strip Mine was restricted sooner along with black vice and berserk but I guess it was just berserk getting restricted that made me take the deck apart.
25:50 the water wurm is so disgusting he was passed over in silence 🙏
Bahahah, you're right! Thanks for watching, it was a long time ago already. :) But believe it or not, a year later I wished I had more than one copy, when I was making this deck: ua-cam.com/video/sf_ntbDzgJs/v-deo.htmlsi=9ila41IxctkQfyOH&t=129
Do you think this deck is still competitive today in premodern? Or you need to include survivals to make it competitive?
That's a good question. All in all, if you're up against the current meta, this essentially Type II version stands no chance. Looking at the top-performing UG Madness decks today, I can tell that they all pack a playset of Squees and Survivals at least, there are some other changes and a splash for red too
What would you include in this dexk to make it competitive against current meta
Which platform for play is it? Ty
@@donmakaveli4671 this is called Forge, avaliable for Android and PC
31:10 I watched this far, so I must comment. I played from mirage block to invasion, so premodern is my nostalgia.
@@didymussumydid9726 thank you, appreciate it! :)
Did you ever authenticate the Chris rush signature?
No, I never sent it for grading, but everyone in the signature authentication groups told me it was authentic. I bought it quite a while ago, back before the Old School boom, and when Christopher Rush was still alive
@@mtgphil42 it looks authentic and I can’t imagine someone forging it on such a card. It certainly has to be real and was sorted as a scribble instead of a signature by someone sorting a bulk collection. Nice one 👍🏻
👌💪
my only issue here is the player should be able to fill his hands very fast. in this case if there are any cards similar to deep analysis i think which can fill your hands
You're right, it can be problematic for sure, the deck can run out of fuel quite fast. However, it's still a mostly aggro deck, if it doesn't win by the mittelspiel time, it will most likely lose. Using some slower card advantage stuff like Fact or Fiction doesn't work here, it's been tried many times...
Very exciting deck ! Thanks for the idea
Haha, I'm glad you like it, it's a very marginal idea, but it's fun to try to make it work at least in some way :)
wow what an interview, i did not expecting this. Indeed those old card have an stories, insane hand art and playabilities. Play them as you like they are a part of us.
Jesus Christ, you have an AWESOME collection! Thanks for sharing the video. Mine is much more humble, but I also have some good cards; not on the level of the Alexandria Bookstore or Tabernacle, of course. Greetings from Spain...!!!!!
Late comment but Ive gotten into premodern thnx to you and brightdaysmtg. Also now might have a friend hooked on it too! Thanks for your vids on these formats
That's great to know, Nathanael! I 've been a strong proponent of Premodern since 2018, then I got somewhat disappointed with what it evolved into. But now I'm rediscovering it not as an uber-powerful format per se, but just as a collection of great old cards from 1995 to 2003.
Don't eat too much of that sugar-free stuff, it will give you diarrhea. 💧👄💦

Thx again mtgphil for showing this pre modern decks, it really helps me learning and builiding some funny decks to play with my girlfriend 👍😁💪🇵🇹
Nice! What decks built so far? Casual play is all I care about in Premodern. Also, I've just been to Portugal for the third time - Lisboa, Sintra and Cascais. Lovely places. Wanted to buy some Portuguese Magic, but didn't find an LGS. :(
The last One i built was a mono green elves deck to make it more Simple to my girlfriend to understand the interactions inside the green Collor, so the idea is to ramp faster, get as much elves as possible INTO the Battlefield, win life using the number of elves in play and for example use voice of the Woods and tap 5 elves to put a 7/7 green elemental with trample on play, and as a surprise use natural affinity to surprise, i like to cycle gempalm strider to get all my elves +2/+2 and make a surprise powerfull attack, this are some of the cheap cards i ve been able to colect in the past few months.( Sorry if my English was not easy to understand) i love mono white decks, but this Next time i think i am going to build a blue and red deck, were i can use curiosity or unstable mutation to enchant metathran elite and make it unblockable and also use Howlin mine and some blue cards i have to draw more cards and i was thinking in words of war to pay 1 everytime a draw a second card each turn and instead give 2 damage to any target, bit it is still an invention in my head to use some of the cards i already own. Thx for teaching me more about old school MTG. I hope you had fun here on Portugal and Next time if you can explore the south near the ocean its completou different experience and the people and places around out south coast are amazing. Next time you come go to "Mercadia" um Benfica its in Lisboa you have more then 400 000 cards for sales there maybe more and if you want to play its a really Nice LGS 👍💪
Thx again mtgphil! 💪
Thank you João ! :) I am supposed to do at least weekly uploads, so now I am finally back on track :)
Red Elemental Blast and Blue Elemental Blast are quite the staples in Old School Magic 93-94 - destroying a permanent at instant speed or countering a spell for only 1 mana is definitely a good deal! They are solid cards for sideboard and can even see some main deck play. However, there is no guarantee that your opponent will play Red (they will most likely play Blue, but perhaps only as a splash color), so what do we do? Paint! Use the Alpha rares that nobody wants to open in a pack - Chaoslace and Thoughtlace (as well as Dwarven Song and Sea King's Blessing) to paint the spells and permanents blue and red and then blast them! Another strategy here is to use Sleight of Mind to make our Beasts of Bogardan, Spinal Villain and even Elder Spawn more relevant!
The dark expansion: my personal favorite expansion....anyway cheers from Philippines...
Yes, it's a really special one, really different from the others... Turns many things upside down. Thank you for your comment!
After playing out 5 or 6 lands, would it be better to just hold the rest of them to help power your Psychatog? At one point I was seeing about 11 lands on the table and room for 6 of them in your hand; that would be like an extra 9 power and toughness plus the opponent might think they still need to overcome a full grip of counters and removal.
Absolutely, you are right, sometimes I didn't keep that pump Psychatog. As for bluffing, sadly it doesn't make sense when playing against the somewhat basic AI, so sometimes one can forget to try hard to do that
I have an android phone and I downloaded this as well as the pics. But I can't find the forge app or access the data due to android 14 restrictions. Do you know how I can add pics of cards ?
Hi, sorry for the late reply. It really is convoluted with the newer versions of Android and storage access. Now pics have been moved to /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/forge.app/Forge/cache/pics

Awesome video! But it’s painful to see your mismatched counterspells and foreign mana leaks!
Yeah, I hate mixing new frame with the old frame :(

I definately are a Johnny 😅🔫 I’m so happy with a 3/3 record 💪 Close to playoff! Almost always loose after sideboard when my opponents has seen the interactions. 1/1s for three mana with a decent effect? Bring me on, Druids, Sorceresses, Enchantress, Assassins, Imps, Tims… ❤️🔥
I feel absolutely the same :)

I just realized her shirt brings out her eyes. 👁🗨👁🗨
Every old school mtg card is a piece of art! Vintage is difficult to find because of prices and their use, but also pre modern art was always amazing to me, some new cards have nice art but old school is the best👌👍💪
A few of us dealer-types (I knew, worked with a lot of Magic dealers in 1994-96-ish as I was a comic dealer) all agreed that if you stood across a room and held up any random Magic card, we would get like 98% correct. The art was that iconic.
@@Rorschachqp I was born in Portugal in 1996, in my countrie MTG was not something easy to find out if you lived in the countrie side, So i still remember the first day i saw MTG cards, i had a friend in school that his mother owned a shop who selled newspapers, tabac and she selled mtg boosters, so my friend had an older brother that was in love with magic and gave my friend(his brother) a small but still large plastic Treasure box full off MTG cards that he did not use, so my friend bringed the box to school, and i still remember the feeling when i saw my first magic cards and the magic i felt inside of me, i was 6 years old, and i remember spending almost 2 hours just looking at the different arts and enjoying myself, the element symbols, the lands, everything got my attention, old school Magic the gathering really fills magical
@@joaoalves-rn3yj Sounds good! Yes during that time of 1996, a huge amount of Magic cards left Los Angeles/Southern California and went to Europe.
So for rarity, several factors are in play that will make a card "rare". And I'm talking ABU mostly because as time goes on, people change in WOTC and they may change the design philosophy. 1) What is it? (Creature, Spell, Land, Artifact) 2) How often is it encountered? Power is not necessarily a consideration. Fireball can be very powerful but it is a common. For example, we all know the color pie and what each color does. If a card does something that is totally color pie, it is often a common. If the card does something in color pie but also in an allied color, it is uncommon. If the card does something of an opposite color, it is a rare. There is also a food chain philosophy for creatures. A commonly found creature that is designed for just within the color is a common. You can have a 1 mana Llanowar Elves that taps for G. But you can also have a Craw Wurm 6/4 for 6 mana. Both are normal green creatures despite one being much bigger than the other. But then Birds Of Paradise is also 1 mana that taps for one mana but it's rare because it also can tap for opposing colors of mana, not just same color green. Then you have Thicket Basilisk, smaller than Craw Wurm but is Uncommon because it has Deathtouch (It should be rare but at the time, they hadn't figured out what color DT belonged to...I think it's black but don't quote.), a special ability where Wurm is just a big dumb green creature. Then compare Cockatrice to Thicket Basilisk. Why is Cockatrice a rare? It's because it has Flying, normally a blue ability, along with Deathtouch. Thicket Basilisk is more useful but the Cockatrice is weirder. Force Of Nature having Trample is normal, being 8/8 makes it uncommon but dealing damage to it's owner (or breaking owner's permanents, sacrifice, etc.) is a black characteristic, like Lord Of The Pit, so it's rare. Another condition is also there for artifacts and lands. Both are similar as the weirder the card, the rarer it is. If the artifact grants pure color ability to any target like Helm Of Chatzuk, then it is rare. If it works within one color, it is uncommon, like Iron Star. Sol Ring and Basalt Monolith generate only colorless so they are uncommon. Black Lotus and Moxen generate colored mana AND cost 0 mana so they are rare. Mana Vault damages you like a black card so it is rare. Last thing to consider is some abilities are exclusive to a color while other abilities are usually in a color but can mildly be shared with allied colors. Flying is mainly a blue ability and any power and toughness. Blue's allies white and black can have flyers but they are like 1/1 (common like Mesa Pegasus), 2/2 (uncommon like Hypnotic Specter), etc. If any other non-allied color card has Flying, like Cockatrice and Shivan Dragon, they will for sure be at least uncommon and if it's a big body, then rare.
i dont believe it
Juzam is interesting to find in played condition. At one time, 99% of the Juzam's were pack fresh back in 1995. Then I played mono black and destroyed the entire local meta in Los Angeles, after Fallen Empires came out. After that, many people played mono black in LA and then in one day, one show, Juzam Djinn went from a junk Arabian U1 into a $70 card, like the price of a Mox Jet. Eventually another player added Nevinyrral's Disk as many people played black vs. black, and Disk controlled tempo. Then, a few months after Ice Age came out, Necropotence, a junk Ice Age rare, was added in and it worked great with Disk. Juzam was dumped since it had poor synergy with Necro and the Type 1 and Type 2 formats were created. So, Juzam was mostly unplayed due to the mental block most players had at that time due to losing life from your own creature and by the time it was played, most people knew about sleeves. However for a few years, official WOTC tournaments had people playing with no sleeves so many worn down Juzams were worn down due to tournament play.
Incredibly cool to hear that story from yo since you experienced it first-hand, I do remember reading about Black Summer. As for Juzam, I can imagine that back when decks were not so streamlined, Serendib Efreet, which is now a staple, was also far from being a star. It would be great to let more people know about that, maybe you would like to do an interview with me? I know you've got amazing things to share
@@mtgphil42 Maybe one day! Also, it was not a staple but it was prominently featured in the deck of the French Champion Bertrand Lestree who was the Finalist in the first World’s where, in my opinion he should have won. 1994. 4x Serendib on the sideboard. It shouldn’t be a staple card, although it’s played like it is in current 93/94, but it hits a lot against control/permission.

Fantastic deck! I've build one that kinda a mix between this and the wombat deck from brightdaysmtg. It is BWG and uses black removal like yours combined with white for spirit link. Enchantress is powerful if she sticks around. Never thought about underworld dreams though! Gotta try it out
Wow, interesting! Spirit Link is just such an amazing card, it could actually work just as a defensive card, without the crazy huge Wombat. :) Underworld Dreams might be hard to cast earlier, but it's so powerful that even in mid-game it can be a decisive card.
Phil is back 🎉👌👌
Thank you for sticking around! :)
Avoid fate to protect the enchantress from swords and bolt. Demonic tutor to tutor for enchantress.
Of course, how could I have forgotten about Demonic Tutor! As for Avoid Fate, I always end up being too greedy and not reserving a slot for it here. I actually tried using Animate Dead because it's an enchantment, so that would be a bonus, but it wouldn't save from Swords...
Good to see you Phil! I like this version of enchantress. I never had much luck with the more standard version of the enchantress deck. This version looks better and I'll have to try it out.
Thank you, Matt, great to hear from you! This one is bit more diversified meaning that you don't put all your eggs in one basket and don't rely on combat at all. Since not every deck runs the Disk or Tranquility, your opponent will most likely have trouble dealing with all the enchantments you put on their permanents, and destroying your own permanent to get rid of Warp Artifact or Wanderlust is a terrible 2-for-1 for them!
And what about Unholy Strength, Hyppies, Rabid Wombat and Paralysis?
Here the idea was to cast as many enchantments that mess with our opponent, casting buffs on your own creatures is so punishable nowadays with all decks running efficient removal... But as for Wombat, that guy is certainly going to appear in one of my decks soon! It's a whole different beast
I made a deck like this but I ran 4x Howling Mine, with Time Walk and Timetwister and used Fastbond, Dark Heart Of The Wood and Gaea's Touch.
Nice! It's like a Turbo Enchantress build, it definitely should play Blue, I even think it can go near-infinite with Time Vault combo, I should definitely look into that!
@@mtgphil42 Sounds good! In 94/95, it was easier to pull off 4 color than it was to do 2 color since dual lands and City Of Brass.
Please support me on Patreon, let's get from Camel to Leviathan! www.patreon.com/mtg_phil Verduran Enchantress is a creature that started the whole Enchantress archetype that spanned over decades, and while the most intuitive thing is to play some buffs on your creatures in a White, Green and Blue deck, this just makes them even more vulnerable. However, here we are taking a look at the Evil Enchantress in Black and Green, with Cursed Land, Warp Artifact, Underworld Dreams and Wanderlust that will damage our opponent every turn as well some card advantage and control elements, it is a truly unique archetype in how it plays and what it is based on.
This is one of my all-time favorite decks! I was first exposed to Magic back in 1997 but didn't get seriously into it until the Odyssey block. I have SO much nostalgia for this era of Magic
Yes! There is something absolutely amazing about it, many people say it was a pretty underwhelming era in Magic's history, but it's all pretty subjective

Yes, Floods were very underwhelming, not matter how promising they looked. :( I just lacked the Worms, never thinking I would ever need them as a playable card :D
