BMW R1200RT Motovlog - Channel Introduction
Great video mate, was good to catch up again we are back at emmas on 3rd nov
I'm glad you liked it. As for the 3rd - I might need to break out the heated clothing. 🥶
Nice ride out mate, some sweet bikes there
Yeah - and it was quieter than other times I have been there.
What a journey you’ve had with the BMW connected app, fair play to you for your persistence. I do really have to question BMW Motorrad’s wisdom and even their customer satisfaction approach, as to why they didn’t just go directly to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? Surely it ultimately would’ve been a more stable platform and it would’ve allowed the customers more choice in navigation apps, as well as the various others apps available on Apple CarPlay and Android auto. I’d be gob smacked if the future 1300RT doesn’t go down this route, it works so well on my Africa twin 1100.
Thanks for the great comment. I don't know how mature the CarPlay and Auto systems were back in 2021, but then it seems the BMW tech wasn't brilliant either. (That said, I feel all these systems feed into the "it's ok to rely in your customer's phone for a premium feature" mindset - and I don't like that at all). I suspect the reason BMW made this decision has a few factors. When they were designing the bike it would have been at least a couple of years before '21. At that point maybe they weren't sure how good the Apple and Android systems would be, and opted for the safety of something that they had full control over. It should be mentioned I have had better success when using a newer phone, but it still has problems. The general principle of a premium bike's navigation relying on a phone that could be of any number of wildly different specs has always been deeply flawed in my opinion. My car nav doesn't do this (it is also BMW) and it is far better. You mention the Africa Twin. I believe the Goldwing's system is similarly better. I have a feeling the 1300GS still relies on the (not)Connected App, so I won't hold my breath for the RT.
Yes, those Sprints get everywhere! Bloody things.....🤣🤣
I should probably stop putting in-jokes in my videos. 😂
Super nice bike! Congrats :)
Thanks, man.
Love the Nine T's, I recently got into the second motorcycle ownership crew. No going back
My brother has three. I have wondered in the past couple of months how long it will be....
@@throttle_up I can't fit any more bikes in the garage 😫
Is it really a new bike day if it doesn't rain? 😀 (Happy New Bike Day) 2 bikes are much better than 1 Ahh, I wondered why you looked familiar... SloRida is a lovely chap. I nearly got the first of the R9T's, sadly couldn't make a deal work with my local BMW dealership.
It definitely was CGI......🤣 Crackin' video, and as much as I hate to say it, that's a nice bike.
Not too cringe, then? 😅
@@throttle_up Not at all.
Fair play, I am impressed with your perseverance! I would have given up and bolted a Garmin ZUMO XT on long ago 🤣. Great video, keep up the good work :)
I'm hoping the system on the R1300RT (ahem) will be better. Thanks for the comment!
Glad to hear the transmission comments. Was so disgusted with the water cooled transmission, I sold my 2015 r1200r soon after purchase. Tried a 2017 supposed improved trans. Wasn't impressed. The real kicker is you could simply forget about the quick shifter and use the clutch because it was impossible to use 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Without completly slowing and deliberate shift and then continuing. Just horrible. Love the bikes otherwise and am excited to hear the 1250 may have improved.
I've found that I use different techniques for different changes at different throttle settings. Sometimes I use the clutch, sometimes clutchless and sometimes quickshifter. (Althought the quickshifter's presence makes clutchless a little more tricky than on bikes that don't have one). All I can say is, try one out, and thanks for the great comment.
Great review....Great comparaison. Factual...empirical. Better than most re-hash of published specs! Keep filming.
I'm very glad you liked the video. It means a lot to me when people leave comments.
The map is nice, but it is a problem, and I can't rely on it been dealing with it for 9,000 miles...It makes the bike unattractive to me.
I totally understand that point of view.
With added epic music. Thx .
I'm glad you liked it. I'll have to grab some more for the next episode.
This really does make me think I need to sort out my audio. I'm genuinely looking forward to more of these. .... and it's about time too.....
Audio is not easy. And motovlogging is among the most challenging genres for it. I just (jokingly) chewed out Uncle Red for his release schedule. I'm such a hypocrite. 😂
@@throttle_up 🤣🤣 Yeah, that's a bit rich.... you both need to sort yourselves out. 🤣🤣 I don't want to wait another six months for the next part of this.
Yay!
It has only been six months.
You earned my sub due to your phenomenal audio quality! The lack of wind noise, picking up the engine tone, clarity of coms is all fantastic. That’s something I really struggle with, I think because I use a flip front helmet. What’s your audio set up? I’m always looking to improve. PS : You’d be helping out a fellow biking ‘tuber by throwing a sub my way. Very near to the 1000 goal now!
Thank you for the compliments. Audio is something I've always struggled with. (Check out my earliest vids for proof of that). I think the first thing I did was to care about it. (And I know you appreciate that). That made me go and learn. I was fortunate enough to come late enough to the game to benefit from using DaVinci Resolve as my editing suite. It has a ton of features and a really healthy tutorial community on YT. So that software is a vital piece of the setup. The only mic I've used throughout is a Purple Panda lavalier. One thing I have never done is wire it up to a camera. At first I plugged it into a cheap mobile phone, but that didn't have a proper input gain, so I bought a Tascam audio recorder which I carry in my pocket. Set the levels at -12db, press record and it'll keep going all day. I also now have a DJI radio mic kit whose transmitters can be used in the same way, and they are small enough to be clipped onto the inside of my summer mesh jacket. The Tascam is too big for that. Even with all that, though, wind noise is still a problem. Even with all the EQ, compression, noise reduction that Resolve offers, it all still needed one final thing - spending a bit more money. I bought an audio plugin which uses a machine-learning powered Voice Isolation feature. And then, of couse, Black Magic Design incorporated the same kind of feature into the Studio version of Resolve, and that was even better, so I bought that too. The clarity of comms is something of a cheat. My brother and I shared each others' audio recordings. :-) But trust me, I still spend hours in post on the audio. Just one last tweak.... I'm hugely uplifted at the thought that you have subscribed - it means a great deal because I can see the effort you put into your vids. I've found motivation for editing somewhat short in supply recently. This has really helped. Oh, and I've been a subscriber of yours for a few months now. ;-)
What's going on with the speedo? It never goes past 55, even when your tach continues climbing (and I can hear the revs going up). See for example 9:40 - 10:40.
Well spotted! It's magic! Well, the magic of editing, anyway. 😉
Indeed, good explanation for the rules 👍 I find in modern days people don't bother with grammar rules. One of my biggest bug bears is the use of "should of" instead of "should've" and similar
Ooooooo, don't get me started.....
Good to see your solution to the 360 selfie stick bounce. I do something similar, using double ended claws to grab onto crash bars.
Great minds think alike... 😀
Which dealer is your rt in. Thanks
Reiten Motorrad in Suffolk is where I go. CO10 7QU Although that particular RT was sold some time ago.
I suspect the reason your 360 contraption moves about is because you have fixed it to the pannier. BMW panniers use a floating mount rather than rigid. Grab hold of a pannier secured on the bike apply light force up down side to side etc. and you should feel movement. Food for thought…..👍
That's something I hadn't thought of. Thanks.
I’m that immature. Sorry. 😂 About the 5 years on the lid. Really? Even if it hasn’t been in a crash? Cheers.
Glad I'm not the only one. 😅 Helmets degrade over time, even if they appear undamaged. The five year thing is only a rule of thumb, though, and a lot depends on how often it is used and how well it's cared for.
Five years is suggested on CBT courses I think, I know I've heard it from a source like that.
I always knew you were good at maths....😆😆 Nice lid....
Hey mate - if you're passionate enough to do a full motovolog episode about apostrophes, AND end it with an animated Apocalypse Now pun, you've earned my sub 🤣 I wouldn't call correcting "it's" vs "its" as being pedantic. It's a confusing rule for someone for whom English isn't their first language, and I think pointing out that kind of thing could be seen as being helpful. In the case of "nos", I would immediately wonder if they're talking about a nitrous system. I'd be inclined to use quotes, as in: How many "no"s did I say? Of course, that's also probably not grammatically correct either... but at that point, you probably *would* be crossing the line into pedantry 😀
Maybe I got the balance about right 🙂
Brilliant vlog pal 👏🤜
Thank you. It's always great to know there are people out there that appreciate what you do.
In fairness even I wouldn't suggest going to Scotland much earlier than late March..... 😆😆
Best way to avoid those first ride of the season problems... Ride all year. 😂😂😂
I think you underestimate the heat of a Cambridgeshire Winter.
Talk about tldr! I would’ve really appreciated your summing up your experience of the navigation system and the vicissitudes you encountered in a succinct précis. Watching this was like watching paint dry.
I always appreciate constructive criticism as I learn this UA-cam malarky. It's a shame the video left you feeling disappointed. I guess my style is not for everyone.
I have my bikes ceramic coated flys are a breeze soapy water none stick flys sorted lol👍
I have some plastic coating on my paintwork, but next time I'm seriously thinking about the ceramic coating.
@@throttle_up I’m getting both this time the ceramic coating will go over your ppf. Coating
I’m trawling through RT posts as I’ve just ordered one so on my test ride 5hrs it worked great and more to the point my iPhone 12 Pro Max fitted with the case off yippee lol I’ve subscribed as your two vids have been helpful and you must be local you was within a mile of my place on this ride ( do you use Reiten in Glemsford?) looking forward to seeing what comes next 🏍🎉👍👍
I'm glad the videos have been helpful. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, it's Reiten in Glemsford I use. They're about an hour's ride for me, but the roads are great. It's been a while since I posted a video, but there are a couple in the works. Editing takes more time than I ever expected when I started the channel.
That’s why we ride RTs, they are the best in my opinion for protection from the elements and wildlife. Even the mirrors provide great protection from that cold wind. I’ve had 3 RTs then onto a K1600 but I’m going back to the RT next month
Interesting. Why the switch back? In my case the reason for not going for the K is I tried taking one off its sidestand once, and it's just too heavy.
@@throttle_up firstly the K is a great bike and engine. But when I do fully loaded with a pillion touring, it’s just too heavy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. The reverse gear certainly helps but when I get lost as I often do abroad and get into sone tight squeezes it’s very heavy to get out and whilst I haven’t dropped it, I’ve come very close a couple of times. Had I been 30 years younger it wouldn’t have been a problem, but I’m getting a bit long in the tooth now
4:30 blimey it sounds like the ice cream van ticking over outside my house. The dash looks just like my 330e which I hate. I don't think technology is being used for the right things anymore
Haha - the sound recording solution I was using at the time probably didn't help. And the engine sounded much better after the first service. So a year on, I think my biggest disappointment with the tech is that the nav software is not on the bike; it's on a phone app. And it has been no end of trouble.
@@throttle_up sorry I meant to say you did a great review, very informative. I find my car asks me too many questions and advises me of too much before I even mentally release the imaginary handbrake. And there's some sort of EU mandated no doubt online account it tells me my credentials are out of date for which requires a lot of cancelling and back buttoning before I can enjoy the infotainment. I spent time trying to alert it to the voice recognition of nazi gobshite instead of hey bmw and that term is on a banned database in Munich somewhere evidently as Zis Ees Not Permitted! Are you keeping her it must be an incredible ride all that aside. 👍
@@throttle_up oh and my car is parked the other side of the wall from the router and it responding to the app is pot luck. Oh and it needed brake pads on 1st March 2002 and has insisted on it in it's 30 month miserable life. I'm waiting for the day it refuses to move because somehow the EU has directed a non grey car mandatory stay at home day to save heat and virus transmission
I only say all this because i love bikes and they've turned an accomplished machine into a bureaucratic nightmare
@@miles-thesleeper-monroe8466 Well, no bureaucracy on the bike so far - I just had a 12 month service 3 months late (unavoidably), and although it nagged me it was no issue. Whether I keep it or not will depend on whether a future model has on-board satnav, and comes in red. I loved the Mars Red on the 2018 model. The blue is nice, but the red was far better.
I gave up and fitted a Nav 6 no more problems!
The old adage “you never see a motorcycle outside a psychiatrist office” certainly rings true for me. Feel a bit down, go for a ride, works every time. Interested what phone you are using? My RT is loaded up with firmware version 012_008_040 and I have an iPhone 11 running iOS 15.5. I have no issues at all with the Sat Nav, love the tidiness of it and planning routes off the bike. Only gripe is not being able to name “favourites” but hoping BMW will fix that.
I'm using an old Nokia 5.1+. I started with a 3.4, but that didn't work very well at all. On reflection, instead of calling the software buggy, I should perhaps be more expressing my dissatisfaction with the approach of not having the core navigation features on the bike itself.
Can you tell me which position-mount ypu have for go pro?
Not really. I don't use one. I have an Insta360 OneX2 attached where the badge on the handlebars normally is. You can buy a 1-inch ball adapter (www.nippynormans.com/gps-accessories/ram-specific-ball-kit-for-r1200rt-lc-r1200rs-lc-r1250rt-r1250rs) and various ram-mount stuff to fit on it.
BMW should have installed a Nav system to the bike just like the Honda Gold Wing. Such an amazing TFT and you cannot get the 100% performance out of it! Too bad and sad!
Totally agree
I also am on the Apple platform, using a iPhone 12 Pro, and after the latest BMW software update the map mode would drop every few minutes and rarely reconnect. However, once I tried leaving my Apple Watch at home the connectivity issues went away completely and the system has worked flawlessly ever since. The watch was useful for text alerts which do not appear on the TFT display, but I can do without the alerts. And the advantage to using my primary phone for all connections to the RT is that I can listen to music (the entire library plus streaming) through my headset and take and send phone calls. It has been a frustrating experience, and BMW probably should know by now that the Apple Watch will override the TFT connections. I had to learn this by trial and error.
I bluetooth my 'real' phone directly to the Cardo for music, and do without the BMW satnav voice instructions. Although supposedly the Cardo can deal with two bluetooth devices...
Came across your channel today having recently had a new K16 delivered. I was interested in the TFT operation. You deliver great informative stuff - but Im now off to learn about Wi-Fi A having no idea what that is 😂 -Cheers
Motorcycle connected apps from BMW, KTM and Ducati were not ready for prime time. Taking a page from Apple, in lieu of proper long term development and testing, they have relied on the purchasers of their expensive products for beta testing and troubleshooting.
There is one point I would make here: Apple are in complete control of the hardware their software runs on. However, that could be turned around by arguing that the bike manufacturers also have hardware they control, i.e. the bike. Why are these systems not running purely on the bike? Especially since we know the bikes have their own connectivity and GPS, because the SOS systems need to work without a smartphone connected. I suspect they save money by using the owner's smartphone connectivity, and there's probably a revenue stream in data harvesting, too. All speculation on my part, of course.
Good review. I bought a 2021 from BMW Park Lane this week. Hoping to get it delivered end of next week. Never even ridden once but have a GS currently so should be all good. Watched you Nav video, seems a learning curve there to say the least! I'll miss my TomTom 550! Cheers
Thanks. What are your reasons for switching from the GS, if you don't mind me asking? I never rode one, but I figured on two things - better weather protection and I preferred the aesthetics of the RT. As for the satnav learning curve, watch this space....
I cant seem to get the "map mode" to show up just the arrow...
Once the Connected App is ready with the route, there's a blue button on the phone map screen I sometimes need to touch to start map mode up on the bike. Also, new nav vid about to drop.
@@throttle_up Thanks, I been able to get it up on the screen but to be honest I don't know how I did it...lol!
9,000 miles later and I still don't like it...

@@throttle_up I look forward to your newest video.
2022 1250 R/T supposed to get it this week...it's been a 6 month wait.
Well, you know you have committed to making a video about it now, don't you?
Save your money, just use one microfiber cloth/rag soaked in warm water, clean your bike with that to remove the bugs then use another dry microfiber cloth to dry it. Done. Been doing it for years. I even take a wet microfiber cloth in a ziplock bag on the road if I need to clear the screen if it gets really bad during my ride. Then if you like you can wax the bike afterwards to make them come off easier next go around. Cheers!
I'll give that a go. My bottle has run out, so maybe it's time. Thanks.
it's 84 cc more, not 50 ...
I stand corrected. Thanks!
That was a good description of the navigation system. Thanks for admitting something I have suspected applies to BMW's system, something I complain about regarding many computerized systems - the programmers' hands should be broken after 15 minutes of system design to keep it from becoming so complex that even they have no idea how to navigate through its menus.
I'm a programmer. I don't like the sound of that. :-)
I’ve heard there have been some issues regarding the TFT screen. However I’ve heard there have been software updates available. Currently awaiting delivery on my triple black 2022 Rt. I do have the 2019 1250 I’ll be trading in. That’s been a great bike.
I've not had any trouble with the screen itself. But I guess there are always teething troubles with new kit.
BMW co-owner of Here WeGo maps but they use Tomtom maps for motorcycles 😂
I do wonder just how closely the car and bike divisions work together.
