I needed this today, I just started sewing in September and it's so frustrating sometimes. I'll take these tips and improve my work. Thank you so, so much!
You are welcome!! Learning to sew can be frustrating at times. Just learn one new thing at a time and enjoy the process! I’ve been sewing for just over 10 years and I know I will always be learning new skills.
I sewed myself a tailors ham and a tailors roll as soon as I retired, when I planned to finally have time to sew a lot ! And I have !
You made a tailor’s ham?!?! That is so cool!!
I use my tailors ham all the time, and the seam roll, too!
Hi Amy. My husband brought me a size small denim jacket from the Goodwill. I will use that to practice embroidery on. Thanks.
Very nice! I think you will enjoy it! You are so creative.
Love all of your makes especially that bold diagonal stripe knit dress - You are very creative to make some changes to your patterns creating a different look. I have always had troubles matching the best fabric for the pattern I want to use. I have had to resort to purchasing fabric online (tricky) because the only place with fabric in my town is Hobby Lobby with a limited selection. Just found you and am enjoying your informative videos!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked these ideas! That diagonal stripe dress is one of my favorite things I’ve made! Buying fabric online is tricky. Amazon is hit or miss- read the reviews! Mood Fabrics and Vogue Fabrics are good options.
Great idea about washing your fabric first!
The tips are great and so very helpful! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! 💕
Wow you definitely improved that dress - nice fabric that was just begging for a new life. Can’t believe we used to wear such frumptastic items! 😮
Thank you so much! “Frumptastic” is a great word for it! Knowing this dress was originally handmade made this refashion so special and fun.
Your flat felled seam is actually a French seam
Good to know! I know there are differences in flat felled vs French seam.
Hi thanks for taking the time to post your video ! Very informative! Stupid question, does it make sense to serge the edges of your fabric after you cut the pattern, instead of serging the edges after you create your seam ? ( provided you stay on the edge properly) .. in my mind this seems easier, but I’m a newbie, so I’m not sure. Thanks !
Hi. Thank you so much! That’s a good question. Normally I sew my seams and then serge. However if you are working with a fabric that frays a lot, then serging beforehand isn’t a bad idea. I’m open to hearing what other viewers think too!
It depends whether you want to serge the two sides of the seam together or keep them separate. If they are separate it will be easier to do alterations in the future if needed. If you want speed you would use th construction used in ready to wear clothes - seam, serge and trim in one operation.
Thank you for your comments. I so agree about the ironing!! I had been taught to iron the seam closed first then open. I think flat felled is great for “sportier” looking fabrics rather than chiffon which is used for more formal wear. A French seam might be more appropriate for lightweight and sheers. Just my opinion.
That’s a great tip to iron the seam closed and then open! I’ll try that this weekend.
I am a quilter. We normally "iron to the dark side" meaning the darkest print of that seam. But if I decided to iron my seams open, we press the seam first to set the seam, then open it and re-press. By the way, I love to iron.
Yes, on chiffon you would use a French seam. Flat felled seams are most commonly seen on jeans and work shirts. I am surprised you didn’t say that.
Thanks for the ironing for quilting tip! I didn’t know that and am working on my first quilt.
True! Good topic idea for a future video.
Using the finished garment measurements is also very helpful when selecting the correct size.
Yes! That’s a really good point about the sizing. Thank you!
Btw, you can also purchase refurbished sergers.
I'm learning how to sew and I really appreciate your video. I'm trying to marry sewing and embroidery. Your tips are great!
Welcome to the world of sewing and embroidering!🧵. I have a video coming out later today or tomorrow showing machine embroidery on a denim jacket that you may like!
I have a taylors ham..bought it years ago...never used it. I just did some tidying up and found it. Yay.
Nice! I had mine for a while before actually using it!
Thank you I do appreciate your tutorial on mistakes made by beginners. I’m not a beginner but I do need to be reminded of mistakes I can make. Thanks again and God bless.
Thank you!
No the real number one mistake is we are seamstress not Sewist? Women are seamstress and man are tailors. I’m a woman and dang proud of it.
I would look up the definition, sewist is a good thing?
Who care what we're called? Strategic remodelers of textile surfaces? I fix em all.😊
A seamstress is a professional with mad skills. It’s what sewists aspire to sew like. Same with tailors. Can you hand sew? No? Sewist.
That’s a good point! However I always thought of a seamstress being someone with professional level dress making and tailoring skills!
@@debraclogston9379- I love that!!!
Great sewing mistakes to avoid! I just happen to be one who likes to press my seams.😂
I don’t mind pressing either. I’d like to get a small circuit heat press.
I do too!😂😂
Thanks Amy.
You are so welcome!
I make a lot of drawstring bags to organize anything I need to keep all the pieces parts together. The flat felled seam is so nice and sturdy and keeps the inside nice and smooth. All of these are such great tips.
Thanks. I need to practice the flat felled seam more. It does make the inside seam look very nice!
Excellent Information!!! Somethings we often forget to do!! Thank You!!!!
Wow this is awesome video. I love it...
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great tips!🤩👍😊
You are so welcome!
I typically buy the pattern, then the fabric, unless it’s a one yard cut or fat quarter bundles, which are my weakness.😊 I like to machine embroider, quilt, and rarely attempt some garment sewing. I find the latter to be extremely challenging.🙄
I just bought my first quilt kit! I’ve never made one and found an easy one for beginners! Wish me luck.
I found a canvas shower curtain and made dish towels.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
It depends. If I like the fabric, I will buy if it's is on sale. I buy patterns when they are on sale. I bought the little mat from the dollar store, also.
I’m with you…. I like a good sale!!
Very nice! 💯
Thank you!!
Great tips Amy! Enjoy your hike!
Joann Fabrics will have sales on patterns. Also Hobby Lobby. Etsy has pdf patterns too that are reasonable priced.
Thanks! Those are great tips!!!
I grew up picking my pattern first then shopping for the fabric and notions - I'm more likely to actually make the project; plus I can only sew so fast! I agree on new or relatively new thread; I tend to pick the thread at the same time I buy the pattern, fabric, and any other notions. There are so many free patterns/tutorials for garments and other projects; you can also check out sewing books from the Library that often include patterns that you can trace (a roll of Swedish Tracing Paper is a must for any sewing room). I'm also curious to learn about drafting my own patterns that also include variation hacks.
Great idea to check out a local library!! Pattern drafting is on my list of things to learn!
Used sewing machines sometimes come with notions. Sometimes a lot, especially if you're buying someones machine in a cabinet. I've scored 3 that had years long accumulations of everything needed to just sit down and sew.
That’s a good point!!
Love the sheet prints
Hi Amy. I'm new here, from Ohio. Hello !
Hi! Thanks for your comments and welcome to my sewing channel!!
Definitely, definitely fabric first! Love thrift store fabric shopping and the thrill of a great deal!
Me too!!
Fabric first… but trying to have a pattern in mind first now. Yes…I need all the fabric…Lol!
I just need more storage room for fabric!!
I love the thrift stores and estate sales ideas. Great tips!!!
Thanks!!!
Great Tips!!! Love the idea of Sheets/Shower Curtains. You have Wonderful Ideas!! Thank you for sharing with us!!!!!
Thank you!!
😍🥰
Leave a comment-what do you buy first; the fabric or the pattern?
The key is to buy both at the same time but not ones that are necessarily matching one another. So then you do a second shopping trip, to get more fabric for your patterns, and to get more patterns for your fabrics :)
@@ifeoluwaogunkola8328 love this!!!
The jacket turned out great! I'm so impressed with your vision and how you bring it to life! Oh, and I do prefer the finished sleeves.
