I'm yet to see a video addressing a dog that won't get his nose off the ground. I've tried Beakman's method, food restriction and he's perfect with leave it when using treats. As soon as I try to walk him, his nose goes down, stops for everything he sees and puts it in his mouth. He will drop on command but has to put everything in his mouth. I can't get him to stop even when I use high value treats and he's gone without food for 18 hours.

Thank you for putting up this video. My Border Collie ( iknow shes not a gundog but she is a working breed) is so chilled on most scenarios but unpredictable with other dogs. im not sure if it is her herding instinct coming out but she will snap and nip at other dogs. She will sometimes sniff noses but then snaps and circles round. She was very fearful when i got her at 7 months but has overcome all of these fears and is oblivious to cyclists, horses, other people. It's just dogs. Advvice needed

I have a reactive German shepherd I walk her at 5am in the morning to avoid other dogs I have taken her to three different trainers and feel that nothing has helped she walks fantastic sits and waits for food and at the front door luckily I have a big back garden so we play in the back as she cannot be trusted of leash as my recall is rubbish with her I walk her everyday for the past three years and know that it’s my fault her reactivity as it’s me that panics when I see other dogs cause I know what’s coming I try to stay calm I have used prong collars slip leads and a toy and treats but nothing can get her gaze away from another dog once she has made contact I subconsciously probably stiffen up and cause more anxiety for her it’s been so difficult from the dog that I wanted someone I could visit the park with and go on trips with to the beach but nope 5am everyday and then back garden

Hi, I really feel for you on this. I have not had much to do with german shepherds as I specialise in gundogs. I have worked with police gundog trainers and the training is very different for close protection dogs and gundogs. I hope you can find a trainer who can help you out as I am sure the issues can be overcome.

Lost credibility when you said "they didn't come like that", implying the dog previously followed the person around as a puppy. Anyone who's ever acquired a dog that wasn't a puppy has, in fact, had a dog that came like that, or a dog that doesn't think we're the most interesting thing, didn't follow us around, and maybe even had trust or other issues.

My Lab was doing well. Recalled to the whistle every time until two days ago when he chased a pheasant! I’m going back to a longline as I know he will now attempt it again. I was still putting him on a longline around other dogs and he was recalling well around them. He was off lead when he chased the pheasant. I feel it’s my fault for not building in distractions in a more methodical way. I know a sausage won’t trump a pheasant but the other issue is, I’ve been rewarding with treats all along! Back to the drawing board. He’s 7.5 months old.

You will need to apply the same principle in all new areas. For example a sit in the garden might mean something totally different to a sit on a high street, all behaviours need to be taught in all environments. Hope that helped!

There is great advice here. I have a beautiful black working lab, he's 10 months and the most wonderful house pet. He came to me at 5 months from a breeder; his litter was bred for odor detection work. My boy didn't have enough drive to make it through the program but he is perfect for our family. Very well settled in the house but plenty of energy when he's out playing. The breeder assured that if we continued encouraging calm behavior and worked his mind a little he would be a great pet and she was absolutely right.

It’s getting to me so much that I’m beginning to resent him and seriously thinking about re homing him. It’s a shame as he’s a brilliant dog in the house but as soon as he out he goes crazy. I'm no expert, but have a hungarian wirehaired Vizla who I rehomed at 8 months old and had difficulty with... First thing I'd say is 3x per day is too much for a dog who doesn't know what it's trying to do. Try leaving it for a week and then restart but only practise for 5 mins per day and keep it to the back garden or somewhere not too exciting until you have it mastered, then move on to the street, then the park when you're ready. Don't kid yourself, and definitely don't get frustrated. It's not an easy thing to do especially once bad habits have developed. You might have to use training treats to get the dog interested in the training when you restart to give it a new incentive.

I bought a slip lead in a local pet shop a few days ago. The shop owner asked, "why are you buying a slip lead ?" My reply - My puppy goes to gundog training. We use slip leads on gundogs because they don't wear collars when working." I'm sure he thought I was jumping on the bandwagon where certain online "dog trainers" use slip leads as a tool to correct poorly trained/poorly handled pet dogs 😆 No. She started going to gundog training from 4 months old and I trained the basics on a flat collar + clip lead. She will be 9 months old in a couple of days and has so much natural ability. Not a pure bred or pedigree gundog breed, but a 3/4 Gordon Setter, 1/4 GWP who came from an accidental litter. Her parents are just pets, but grandparents and beyond are working gundogs. My puppy has inherited her natural ability from hundreds of years of working Gordon (British and Eurpoean) and working GWP ancestry.
