Shows a collection of home videos which were taken during the repair of a badly designed timber frame house which was shown on ITV's "Homes from Hell" programme. These repairs took over 6 years of fairly continuous work by the owners. All due to an architect who didn't understand the Laws of Physics and consequently designed crap, allowed crap to be built, signed off on crap and didn't have insurance adequate to fix his crap.
Architect's design: A Bath "homes from hell" episode 1
Taken from ITV "Homes from Hell" series, first of two episodes describing the technical failure of a timber frame house designed by an architecture practice without adequate indemnity insurance.

Shows the repair of a timber frame wall, this was done from inside not outside, shows fungal decay caused by interstitial condensation.
Architect's design "home from hell" inspect damage
Переглядів 1469 років тому
This video shows the removal of a retaining wall, concrete block and 10cm poured RC. To expose the original timber frame which was being destroyed by water, which was from interstitial condensation caused by idiotic design by an architect who thought that the laws of nature didn't apply to him. It shows a piece of OSB being squeezed and water running out of it.
Architect's design "home from hell" wall plate replacement

Off foundation problems winter spring 2007
Переглядів 289 років тому
Shows problems from incorrect design spec when building on a land-fill site where the main foundation is a piled foundation and other items which relate to the building are placed on strip footings and allowed to subside as the land continues to settle.
Water flowing out of foundations Autumn 2006
Переглядів 959 років тому
Shows investigation of excessive humidity under building, shows water flowing out of foundations when it rains, shows how surface water drainage needs to be at the correct level to avoid problems.
Drainage trenches preparation spring 2007
Переглядів 209 років тому
Shows original surface water drainage, shows excavation work to put drainage in at an appropriate level to prevent water penetrating under the building and presenting high humidity to sub floor void.
Architect's design: A Bath "homes from hell" episode 2
Переглядів 47 тис.9 років тому
Extract from "Homes from Hell" about an Architect's failed design in Bath, the consequences, and how dreams are shattered.
2 ugly buildings i would have something smaller built and out of bricks and morter That big out building looks like a school gymnasium ugly as hell and why do they need a big property when its the 2 of them. They could have saved money on a smaller building and something that looks nice
Architects seem to be a law unto themselves! We got caught too by an Architect's "folly" - turning our simple design into a "castellated" behemoth that, while it was nice, virtually doubled the cost of the build!
How are these guys doing now? I'm a roofer do alot of timber work as well would be happy to offer my spare time
Have a look at the link from 4 yrs ago
Why did this happen?
The architect didn't understand the laws of physics, interstitial condensation within the wall created the conditions for the wall to become wet, the design of the wall didn't allow for any drying to occur, result = rot. Entirely design related, entirely preventable by good design practice.
Welldone
A couple of morons. Makes you wonder how they ever made any money.
Even if it wasn't badly built it's such an eyesore in such an attractive area.
this is hard to believe
Dreadful, probably looked good on paper, the skills required to build a house fitting in with Bath -Georgian properties , just aint there now and too expensive, this looks cheap, almost like a pair of shipping containers.
That house is hideously ugly. It looks like a factory outlet and is seriously out of place in that environment.
I'm amazed that they can be so jolly! Well done to them!
Knock it down - real eyesore ............!!!
That`s the most horrible house design ever as people have said on here it looks like a warehouse, prison, community centre or hospital. Not a house where any sane person would want to live.
They should have gotten more than 130 k damn . Depressing.
Glad there was a good outcome . Did you not do your research before building ?
what the heck is it with you people and music??? am I somehow supposed to be fascinated by your music? grow up
@Jumpy Cat why do ppl have to add music to a vid that is demonstrating something
Sorry but these two houses are so ugly!
its a bandade phone Vancouver Canada they have delt with that design the problem is not fixed
they have to build an over hang around the hole of both homes to protect the windows and wall from the elements (rain)and yes it has to be gutted for mold that is the cheapest worst design ever created
4 minutes and 21 seconds of regurgitated footage from eps 1
how does ANYONE think a single layer roof like the "conservatory roof " is NOT going to drip ? ... warm moist air WILL CONDENSATE against ...ANY COLD SURFACE .... kitchens produce alot of this, humans breath out 4 litres+ a day .... I have always disliked open plan living spaces where kitchen moisture can go where ever it likes ...bathrooms have doors and exhaust fans for a reason .... this couple needs to buy several dehumidifiers .... to dry this place out
Shocking architect and builders to allow it to hpen
get a trailer and live on the property...
who needs such a big barn ...unless your building an ark
Lovely and resilient folk, shame the place looks like a Russian toilet block. Good luck to ya
Build a gantry, and swing the architect
What a nightmare for you. Doze the place and walk away with a million bucks. LET IT GO
Money attracts sharks pure and simple. You still have an amazing home though whilst other families have none at all
Easier to knock it down and start again. Cut your losses and stress.
Wow hideous buildings. I wonder how their neighbours reacted to the big builds. Also why didn't they look into the problem immediately and pursue it with an outside professional assessment of the water issue ?! Would have caught it before it sustained serious damage.
It looks like an medical building horrible design. Did they research the builders or architects? That's on them you just dont hire the first guy on google
You needed someone to tell you if the house was good or bad? Really?
how can someone be so utterly stupid?
The guy had an " engineering business" yet he hired an architect? He didn't realize that there would be massive condensation? And what flimsy building materials! Dumbass...
Here is a dilema, in this case who you sue? the engineer, or the architect, or the builder? or everybody?
The answer to that is straightforward: The designer (architect) produces information (drawings) The manufacturer (builder) makes whatever the drawings specify. If something doesn't work, compare the product to the drawings, if the product is not to drawing the manufacturer is at fault, if the product is as drawn then its a design fault.
I don't understand how an engineer and arcquitech made this thing that does not look like home and besides so defective that you can not live there with all the mold. What they were thinking using wood on the bottom of the home in swamp area, but even so, homes should be made only with bricks or rocks. I hate homes made of wood. It's a hell in summertime or huge airconditioner bills. Gosh, I am just a humble high school graduate, I don't understand anything about home. but this construction is not home, it's a disaster. If I was his friend I would tell him: "are you sure you want this design?"
Such nice people, but I think they should have put in a small cottage and a smaller guest house instead.
Aluminum window frames in this day and age??
As an Engineer the homeowner should have immediately recognized the homes ventilation problem and instituted a cure...it would have saved him many thousands of pounds. By the way was the hideous connected factory building masquerading as a home extension finally demolished? I'm surprised the City of Bath saw fit to approve such a monstrosity, since the entire finished build was little more than a catastrophic eyesore. The carpentry and finished millwork looked like it was readied with a hand axe.
seems nice enough now. ua-cam.com/users/redirect?event=comments&stzid=UgxEMVnfHooDOblhKPp4AaABAg&q=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.giphy.com%2Fmedia%2FenqOTPyVvoCypNT7B5%2Fgiphy.gif&redir_token=2DJc8NP-EPcX5L5-Bvg3Cs2YVad8MTU2Njg0NjY4M0AxNTY2NzYwMjgz
Wow, sill plate is what that's called. Two, wow. Where was the building inspector? IDK about England but in MI they check for things like flashing, vapor barriers, and so on. It's part of the permitting process. Get a permit, do an inspection then move in. Maybe multiple inspections. Anyone with common sense would have figured that out day one.
yes ! ...AN INSPECTOR is not god ..... too often they get it wrong ...like the one who was "god" to my plumbers ...... plumbers who had to be called back ....NO SEWER VENT PIPE ..... and they charge how much ? !..... and HERE ( AUSTRALIA )it's illegal to do it yourself !!!!
So,what about the builders?Arent they responsible for interpreting the architects rendering?
No matter which way you turn it's always something.
Same as part one?
Amazing couple
Thank you sir.
Houses that size you'd be cleaning all day long. Personally after a life in the pub trade, working all day until 2 or 3 am I never want to clean again!! Now I have a 2 bedroom home a small kitchen, bathroom and downstairs wc. I am thinking in a few years I might actually move into a one bedroom flat, that'd do for me!
These people are IDIOTS! This isn't just-a "Mistake"! IF He knew-so much, how come he F....KED UP so bad!
The Man owner seems so intelligent when he lectures us about whats Wrong. So was he asleep during the building? Didn't he walk around inspecting it while it was being built? He annoys me. All he does is talk, but he only listens to himself. A NO IT ALL, who really is dumb.
Its nice to know I've annoyed you, the feeling is mutual. And no I didn't walk round it while it was being built, most of the time I wasn't in the same country, and you may not realise it but by law you have to ask the builder for permission to walk round a building site, even if you own the land.
@@aviator98 , not in America.
Would make for a bad hair day everyday
They dropped a bollock with this - totally inappropriate build.Nice people who seem very intelligent which is why it surprises me they got in this pickle. However, they got the land for a bargain in 93 so don’t feel to sorry for them ,they could have scrapped these two monstrosities and sell the land -which they would make a bomb on ....and what they should have done a few years ago. The ‘architect’needs to be named and shamed- wonder how many other people (not as laid back and able as these two) who’s lives this tit - with a big ego and no talent- has fucked up!
A case of an architects ego running away with him ,and it’s completely inappropriate for the environment. It looks like a prefab next to a large 70’s council house. The couple seem lovely and surprisingly laid back considering. I hope they finally get what they want-seen there’s a part two so.....
