    Hi Michael. I have the same bass and some of the "faults" you found are very minor. I don't think I have ever purchased a guitar that didn't need some sort of neck adjustment. Having owned a few of the China made Hofners over the years, none of them came with the groove in the saddle for the strings, though I also like putting in a very small groove, too much of a groove and the strings will touch the wood bridge. The floating bridge is as quirky as it can get but that's a Hofner for you and I feel the tunning machines where just basically following the line of the headstock. This is as close as one can get to sounding Hofner like for a LOT less money.

    I have 2014 Squier VM 70s Jazz Bass in Candy apple red, and recently i got Fender Japan International Color LTD Jazz bass and i have to say Fender is so much better built, perfect fit and finish, no blemishes at all, hardware is so much better, sound as well. Neck is a dream on Fender, low action and straight. So you get what you pay for.

      Thanks for your message, indeed those guitars made in Japan often come out well in terms of quality. Squier guitars can often be surprisingly good both in terms of sound and overall build quality, but as you rightly say, you get what you pay for in many instances. As for set up and playability, this is something I tend to view as dynamic rather than static, ie that many guitars will need review for set up over time according to factors such as ambient humidity, use etc. (please take a look at some of my set up videos). It's all very interesting. Best wishes, Michael

    My father had a Ranger XII from the late '60s which I have recently inherited. Aside from needing a bit of a dusting down, a new upper D string (probably my fault from trying to retune it after 20+ years of not being played), a minor chip to the body and the scratchplate becoming detached (any help would be appreciated!), it feels and plays like it was made yesterday. Unlike many which apparently suffered the problem with the bridge becoming "detached", this remained remarkably unscathed in that area, although I do recall from my youth the number of upper D and upper G strings that needed replacing! I remember it as a beautiful guitar (Dad was a pretty useful ragtime guitarist) and even today, without the care and attention it might have had but for many years of disuse, it remains a remarkable instrument. Please feel free to get in touch should you want to check it out.

    • @michaelsguitarreviews
      @michaelsguitarreviews 23 дні тому

      Good to hear from you and to know that you have inherited a much loved guitar. Scratch plate may be refixed using a non-solvent adhesive (sparingly). As for strings, depending on your preference, you might find lighter gauge more comfortable to play, though will sacrifice some tone / volume. Either way, it may be that the strings need replacing as they deteriorate over time. Many players of 12 string guitars prefer to detune to 'D' which eases string tension. If you wish to return to 'E' tuning just put a capo on the second fret space. With best wishes, Michael

    Yes the bridge was pop riveted on in the factory. No the pickup and preamp are recent addition. If the screws in the neckplate are slotted then it's pre 1968 as in 1969 the factory switched to cross head (philips) screws, also if the pick guard is quite thick it's pre 1979. That one with that lable type and rosette looks mid 60s, (can't see the neck screw heads).

    Now in late 2024, Markbass is selling these as rebadged Markbass MB Yellow line (3 models). One is the JB which has two of the jazz pickups, calling it the JB model. Just got one and looking forward to learning bass on it. And they're cheaper than Fender-badged Affinity ie. Chinese-made models for Fender or whomever will take them. Would have been nice to hear the amp more here, it is mainly ambient physical noise from the bass and not the amped sound.

      @@alexishunter-craig5457 fantastic news. For a lot of bass playing you will benefit from understanding basic patterns. These are at least major and minor scales which are simple but very effective. Bass often relies on good time keeping so keep it very simple to begin, concentrating on root notes, ie the note. having the name of the chord, so if the chord is E them play along just with the note of E. When you get comfortable with timing then you can add in another relative note, for example a B which you will find is a companion in the scale of E Minor etc. Start out focusing on time keeping as without that the bass becomes something different. Play along for example to a very simple and slow blues. Most blues uses three chords so basically you need know three notes on the bass. It's fun and absorbing. The sky is the limit. The bass is amazingly adaptable and in the right hands is arguably more essential than some other instruments. Enjoy, Michael

      Thanks for your message. The bass was loaned for the review and is now back with its owner, so I no longer have access to answer your question. As for the action on your bass, I would first check the neck relief around the middle of the fingerboard when the string is pressed at the 17th fret. if the relief is high then it might need a neck adjustment. 12 string guitars should always be tuned down to D (1 tone) and a capo place on the 2nd fret. Why someone doesn't make a 12 string that takes this necessity away, I don't know. I had this guitar in the 70s and never had any problems with the top or the neck. The new version is very affordable and comes with a pickup and sealed tuners. Tuners works well, although I would prefer 19:1 gear ratio. In the 70s, the logo was under the lacquer which I prefer aesthetically. This guitar was used in studios. The laminate top was the clincher and the bracing. It was a cheap way of building and giving it a robustness - while at the same time, the tone would always be consistent. Many would take the advice to steer away from laminate guitars, but in 12 strings, I think it's a lot safer, especially if you like the tone and want to keep it for decades. When people played my 12 string, they all wanted one and then asked me to set it up and put pickups on etc. These days, you don't need to do that and it comes with a warranty. The vintage model does have a nicer adjustment screw on the saddle. Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

    • @michaelsguitarreviews
      @michaelsguitarreviews 3 місяці тому

      Your message is a pleasure to read, thank you. What you say makes perfect sense, both in terms of detuning and also the debate re laminate tops and stronger bracing patterns. As you rightly point out, these instruments have provided great pleasure and utility for many players. As with guitars in general, I too appreciate that modern versions can replicate the benefits of older guitars, whilst adding features that enhance them. Thanks again for taking time to share, it is very much appreciated. Kind regards, Michael

    Michael, I have a 1967 model - very similar to the one you demo-, but I have a pick-up fitted to the bridge inside the guitar. I play through a Marshall Acoustic amp, which has a chorus effect. This makes a wonderful sound for a lot of songs, especially when they date to the same as the guitar - 1960's. It has been a wonderful friend and I hope my grandsons will continue to enjoy it when I'm gone.

      It's a while since I recorded this review so I can't recall exactly, but judging by my comments it would seem like a worthy choice. I'd recommend revisiting the review for how it might sound, though making allowance for the quality of sound reproduction. I hope this helps you. Best wishes, Michael

    Bad information you're giving out here. The Tanglewood Winterleaf TW4 is laminated top, back and sides, not an all solid wood as you mentioned.

    Also they tend to sound better with a pick for most music.

    I have a 2019 cherry sg bass and a 2020 ebony sg bass and I love them,100%stock ,no need to change the bridge or anything,just learn the volume and tone knobs and you’ll find that they sound great.make sure the bridge is leaning towards the rear.
