An important point: Ataturk and his anti islam policies were not an overnight development, after the ottoman empire got in contact with the early modern ideological and technological developments of europe, they became aware how far behind they are especially in administration and technology. Many modern turks look with abhorrence to their ottoman islamic heritage/culture and they wish that they were born european, while many japanese in contrast are very proud of their culture.
