LIRR Trains and the Blizzard of 1978 Syosset NY.
Just some bad 8mm silent film I took back in the day. I wish at the time I took these films a little closer to the tracks. I took most of the train films from the window of my upstairs bedroom. Trains going to the left are westbound heading into the Syosset station. Trains going to the right are eastbound approaching Syosset-Woodbury Rd. Snow is from the Blizzard of 1978. Took the town about 3-4 days before they cleared our street with that heavy equipment. No school Monday - Thursday.. I extended it to Friday.

I found this clip recently and put it up today, a year after I recorded it. I recorded the eastbound trip but forgot about the westbound. It was a warm 45 degree day and foggy about 4:50 pm. Even the horn sounds eerie at 00:14 and then, the train just disappeared at the end. Here's the link to the eastbound trip that day. ua-cam.com/video/kqZuPHR8gfo/v-deo.html

That grey-haired "car knocker" (we call 'em "conductors" now) is a "gas"...no yellow "high-vis" vest, no radio, no "3-step"! How things have changed in 38 years. Classic (nowadays "Fallen Flag") boxcars everywhere...L&N, Family Lines, N&W, Frisco, UP, SP, Cotton Belt...Wow!!

That lumber yard is still there but not sure if it is still Georgia Pacific. It is still a lumber yard and still have rail freight service but now is done by New York & Atlantic railroad. Motive power is no longer the C-420's but now performed by ex-LIRR GP38-2's and MP15's.

3:37 I love the footage. My father worked the Ronkonkoma yard back in the 70s and 80s. He worked the midnight shift and that gray building in the back was the LIRR employee shop. He used to take me to work with him back then when I was a little kid and always remember when he took me to the Jaws plow and into a GP-38. Great memories watching this and how much I miss my dad. Thanks!

The LIRR ran trains on this mainline for City People headed to Boston, that was why they built the LIRR in the first place, middle of the 19th Century.
