    Wasn’t Jesus anxious in the Garden of Gethsemane?

    • @irondeep
      @irondeep 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment, Josh. Good thought. Most anxiousness that scripture talks about that I've seen and what we're speaking to has to do with worry about trying to control what will happen or not knowing what is about to happen. It comes as a burden because of lack of faith in trying to control things yourself in a sense. Christ knew exactly what was going to happen. He could control everything if He wanted to. He could call on a legion of angels. He wasn't anxious as scripture speaks of anxiousness. In fact, in Luke 12:25-26, Jesus says, "And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?" The word anxious there in greek is 'merimnaō' which means to be anxious or troubled with cares as we would understand the word anxious. It's the same word used in Philippians 4:6 when it says, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Again it's 'merimnaō' and the stress we put on ourselves by worrying if God will care for us and provide for us, etc. In Luke 22:44 when Jesus is suffering in the mount of olives in prayer, it says, "And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground." The word agony is 'agōnia' which means a struggle for victory like a gymnastic exercise or wrestling. Jesus did have strong emotions happening as anyone would. When we follow Christ, we're promised suffering which will come with emotions. Father God has deep emotions of joy and sorrow. Anxiousness caused by where we focus our mind and faith is different from hardship and deep felt experiences. Does that make sense? Again in Mark 14 Jesus said, "Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” Being sorrowful is something Jesus and all of us can experience while we walk in faith and obedience. It's not roses all the time walking in obedience to God. But if I let those circumstances effect my faith and in believing who will carry me through those circumstances, that's a different story. Hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Young people are leaving because they're not stupid. And they're not the only ones leaving. But some Boomers who would otherwise walk choose to stay on as in-house unbelievers (70% of Christians surveyed as not believing Jesus is the only path to god/heaven), but they also choose not to risk losing friends, losing their routine, losing their opportunities for "good" doing. They stay because they prioritize social community more than authenticity. I was in church for 40 years when I finally got out. But the young people today are smarter. They can smell BS a mile off and they have an object in their pocket to give them all the reasons they need NOT to stay: the bigotry, the outright r@cism, the endless violence in the bible, the misogyny, the ritual male genital mutilation loyalty oath, the human enslavement. They're leaving because they're not stupid and they CAN. They're not having to weigh things like a spouse, children, home, job to be LOST if they uproot and go. And no, there's nothing you can do.

    • @irondeep
      @irondeep 7 місяців тому

      Jenna, thanks for your comment. I think you're right in a lot of ways about "smelling BS" as you put it. Part of the point of this episode, Dennis refers to Constantine and that era, which we didn't have time to deep dive into. But to your point, in that era, the church was greatly altered in negative ways, and has in many ways been turned into an institution rather than the living body of Christ. I agree with you that many Christians in church through centuries have followed a deceptive and even harsh religious system and not really encountered the true and living God. That's part of what Jesus battled with the Pharisees. He hates a dead religious system. He wants us to experience the true and living God. I think the Bible is pretty clear about warning how these very things would take place through the ages and to be on guard against it. So I can appreciate many of your observations and felt experiences. I think you're hitting on many elements of truth. However, where I believe we disagree with you, and I would hope you might take time to think on and do more deep diving and reconsider, is that just because there has been a broken church system, doesn't negate the fact that Jesus is very real and has the power to bring us true spiritual life and redeem us from the power of sin and death. If you want to talk about many of the specific topics you listed, we can get into many more side conversations. I think you're partially correct, but also misinformed on some of these other topics you'd criticize Christianity or the Bible about. Many people today subscribe to a very critical and deceptive agenda-driven 'humanistic' doctrines, that are just another type of religious system when you really look at it. Many of the patterns of 'social-justice' or 'climate-change' and many agendas that have an appearance of 'good' are themselves deceptive. The spirit of people in these movements seem just as angry and harsh as those in eras where the roman catholic church had its crusades or inquisitions. Many are jumping out of the frying pan & into the fire. The truth is, many of us at Iron Deep have lived so "freely" in the world without Christ, and it kept taking us down deeper and darker paths. Jesus Christ was the only person who met me personally, and had the power to set me free from so many things destroying me. He gave me a love, joy and peace like I've never experienced. And since I've walked with Him personally, not just in a religious system, my life has been completely changed and renewed for the better. It's made me a person who is more loving and kind and able to better help others in need. The reality is, while many churches are broken, there are still a lot that have a portion of the life-giving power of Christ. Because let's face it, nobody is perfect. People are still on journeys. And we need to have grace for each other. It seems to me, you lived much of your life in a religious system, but never actually met Christ. I believe if you personally actually met Him, you'd gladly receive Him, and your life would never be the same. I appreciate you watching and honestly sharing your thoughts. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and I don't want to try to force anyone to agree with me. God gave us all free will, and even He won't force anyone to believe in Him, let alone open their hearts to Him. Part of why we do this, is to have honest conversation and dialogue. So I appreciate your. Thank you for sharing, Jenna!

Not sure from your message if you liked the show or not. I mean, most podcasts have guests promote something to some extent. Whether it be a new book coming out or a service offered they specialize in. We love to let our viewers know how to reach out to a guest if they find the conversation helpful and want to learn more. But I also like to think our podcast conversations typically focus on valuable conversational content that people can learn from. Did you watch the whole podcast? What did you think about everything discussed about scaling down a business? Or about the importance of family life in balance with business? Or stress level, etc.? Did any of the advice Tyler offered help you in thinking about business operations or life balance?

    This was a great parable. I love the animation and the easy explanation. Great take away in comparing the two brothers.

      Thanks for watching. This is a great parable that helped teach me a lot about the realities of humility and pride and hidden pride. And it helped teach about self-righteousness in a different kind of light. Glad you liked it!

    Really like this, but not everyone is in a financial position to walk away from their career or business. In those instances, where people still have work to create the financial security needed that would allow them the freedom to not work and only serve God. I'm thinking of those individuals having to work overtime just to put food on the table for their kids, and pay their rent.
