Thank you very much for sharing this information with us.
Very clear instruction 🤝
What about the "Phases" section? Do you use it?
Good video. Thanks. Where did you get the material?
Thanks for this! Does this print in color or just black and white?
Hey - yes you can print in colour. In the print settings you can let them know what paper type you would like and whether it's bulk/wht or colour. Be careful as colour is WAY more expensive with prints this large.
Thank you very much, Connor!
Glad it was helpful :)
Haven’t met a takeoff guy that gets it perfect. I always need something more.
It's hard to nail your takeoffs if you haven't built something similar.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Can I get an email of your set of plans?
Hey there, these drawings were provided for our classes at George Brown College. Unfortunately, I am not able to share them with people outside of my direct students.
Informative video. . . I'm a truss designer it's a pleasure if I can help in any case of trusses designing
Thanks
Is this something that I can study in university and what would that degree most neatly be? I love this content and can see myself doing this type of work.
This course support our 3yr Building and Renovation Technology program at George Brown College. If you can let me know where you are based I can see if I know of a local program.
@@connormalloy8383 North East I’m willing to drive anywhere and better yet have employment that allows me extreme flexibility. Thanks again.
@@davidavila-medina2228 Take a look at the different Ontario colleges offering skilled trades education. There are some great programs that you may like.
Sad that i just found this series of videos and some look like they have been taken down :(
I was thinking the same thing
It's been a while since I have made videos. If you like these, I can make more.
great video, but you got to get with Bluebeam takeoffs ; )
Ha - yes. I do like Bluebeam IF you know what you are looking for! This video was made for a 2nd year carpentry student new to plan reading and estimating. Sometimes programs can add a learning curve that confuses the learning outcome of a particular project. You'll be happy to know we teach Bluebeam to higher level classes :)

Hello, I'm new to the construction industry I'm still learning but I want to know how to calculate the square fee6 of a roof, we set the trusses and do the sheathing but often I get sent plans and asked to figure out the square feet, thanks in advance!
Hey there - you need to consider the roof factor when measuring the area of a roof. To do this, measure the orthographic area (length x width off the plan). Say this is a 10' x 10' shed. The area of the roof from the roof plan is 100sq. ft right? We're close, but this does not account for the roof slope. We need to multiply this 100sq ft. by the roof factor (added area) to account for the slope. For a 12/12 pitch, we multiply the 100sq ft by 1.4142 to get 141 sq ft. WAY more material right?? Look up a 'Roof Pitch Factor Chart' and keep this by your desk. Hope that helps.
What kind of education did you get to learn all of this?
Long/short story. My Dad is a builder, worked for many years on-site and in the office developing projects, studied design at school, ran my own projects and then learned how to teach others what I know!
Lovely
This was fantastic! Thank you for uploading this!
Glad it was helpful.
Is there a software for estimating?
planswift, bluebeam
There is a bunch of them including Bluebeam and STACK. I would say if you can't break a project down successfully on paper, the software doesn't do anything magical for you.
If it possible, would i import the schedule of excel
Buildertrend is interesting where you need to build the schedule on their platform. You may be able to download the schedule you create as an excel file though.
Can you schedule in tasks based per hour, not days only. When I used BuilderTrend few years ago it didn't have that option. All scheduling goes per day and some tasks are hourly so it is hard to make a proper schedule.
Hey there, yes you can schedule by hours but I would suggest you look to another software tool if this is the kind of schedule you build. Likely something that also offers time tracking to benefit from the detail you are pre-planning.
Do you also take into account the material wastage in your estimations? if so then how much percentage is that?
25%
25% is pretty high, unless you want a lot of waste, average is more like 15%.
Great question, and 'it depends'. Conventional waste factors for framing are +10% but this is dependent on the project complexity and how closely the dimensions of the build align with standard material sizes. Sheathing a 12/12 gable wall will produce more waste plywood than sheathing a flat roof facade. Same goes for flat roofs and hip/valley roofs. Get it? I would suggest you estimate /takeoff to the plans and start with a factor you are comfortable with (say 10-15%). When the framing scope is complete determine what your actual overage was to learn your actual waste factor. Track this overtime and you till learn how well your estimate and team does with material. I will say that the higher was factor you estimate (and deliver), your team will certainly make more waste!
great city trees always look great compare to neighborhood city trees toronto ahead of any city i have seen
If you don't protect them, they won't be around! You got it.
Thank you very much, very simple yet thorough teaching, making it easy for an estimator-in-training like me to understand.
Glad this was helpful for you.
Excellent break down
Thanks!
How about trims and skirtings?
Inner face linesr meters of each room or area you intend to have them. It would be x2 if you intend to have those finishes on the floor and ceiling
Linear takeoffs. I round to the nearest foot on each wall.
The red dot!
Pretty helpful!
Thank you!
Happy this was helpful.
great video thank you, one thing i'm missing is why you're using diagonals for area. I googled it a bit but I don't understand the purpose instead of using length and width
He measured the LxW for the calculation, but drew out the diagonals because that’s usually how area is indicated on floor plans.
Subbed thank you
Thanks.
Great Explanation. Thank You so much!
Glad to help.
Well done instructional video for "scheduling" using Builder Trend. Thank you Do you plan to present an instructional video for estimating construction costs using Builder Trend?
I can look at that if you (and my class) think it could be helpful.
great video!!!
Thanks!
Great video, Try fixing the audio or talking louder. It's very quiet and sometimes hard to hear
Will do - I made these cheaply using an iPad hung from the ceiling during the first lockdowns. I have a much better setup now!
Which college in Ontario do you instruct at? I would love to know what program this is for.
Hey Andraya, I teach at George Brown College in Toronto. This series of tutorials was developed for a class in our Building and Renovation Technology program. If you like these videos, you should see what we get to do in class!
@@connormalloy8383 Funny enough that's the only college & program I know of in the province. I work remotely for a board member of the program I believe. A few of our team members have taken the program over the years, it's neat getting an insight into what they learn during it. I haven't heard of a similar program here in BC, I'll have to go looking. I watched each lesson in the series, you're a wonderful instructor, so clear and concise.
this video needs more likes.
Thanks, Angel.
Hey Connor, just came across your video and just wanted to leave a comment that the videos are very helpful, and I've gone through most of the videos just taking notes and stuff, just wanted to find out if you would be making any more estimating videos in the future?
Hey - yes, will be making more videos at some point soon. I make these for my students in class when they need help, and make them public. If I get more questions this semester on Estimating I will share them with all of you too. Appreciate the feedback.
@@connormalloy8383 No worries thank you, look forward to any future videos
this series was great, thank you so much for the information
Happy to share, Sara!
Hi Conor, I’m from north of California. Really like your videos. Do you do estimate by email? How much do you charge? I just got my general contractor license and I’m having trouble with the take off of big plans.
Hey Marlene, appreciate the feedback. I would not recommend using any service that estimates by email (and why I do not do this either). Estimating materials is depended on the quality of the drawings (the set in this video cost $20,000) but they don't share much of the existing conditions. You don't want to miss out on items not shown in the drawings. The other reason you need to learn to estimate your own work is ONLY YOU know the efficiency of your own labour (your team or subs). Pricing books are useless as your team will work fast/slow and you might pay them more/less than average labour rates. All to say, try and take a more in-depth Estimating course somewhere. Let me know if you need some links to this.
@@connormalloy8383 Could you let me know some courses you would recommend to learn take offs - I'm doing foundation/slab and framing hardware.

Can you do schedule per hourly and to show on the list. Example if I want to schedule one day work broken out in hourly tasks

How do I create invoice for my clients with BT?
If you still need help with this I can make a video. Sorry for not seeing this comment earlier!
Hey Conor, really liking these estimating videos. Is there somewhere online I could get a pdf copy of similar set of drawings?
Hey Evan, we are fortunate to have a colleague share these drawing sets with our students. This set cost the client approx $20,000 to develop with their architect. As such, I can't share these! Best trying to find something similar.
Can you do more tutorials on builder trend.. please ...
Sure, I can look into it. What would you like to learn about?
Question, why don't you use Phases & Tags?
Hey Christopher, I made a 2nd Buildertrend video where I introduced Phases. As far as Tags, I taught this in-class to my students. Just to note, I developed these videos to support teaching my students in-class so the videos do not cover everything I teach during a class. Hopefully some of this was helpful to you too.
connor how might I be able to contact you directly
Hi Steve, you can DM to my instagram @design.build.educate I can't share my school email publicly.
If you could do this video while you are on program to design each page would be easier to understand.
Hi Charles, thanks for the feedback. This tutorial was developed for in-class take-offs using hard copies of plans. As such, we were teaching this old school. That said, we are using a digital takeoff software this term (called STACK) so perhaps I will share the tutorials I make again.
@@connormalloy8383 I thought it was very easy to understand and also, that you explained it like a great teacher!
Love your video ,please would like to learn to estimate labor
Great suggestion! Estimating labour is a tough one to fit into a short video as there are no simple rules. You are best to track labour efficiency on your own projects with 'labour cards' and build data based on your own employee's efficiency. Look at the writings of David Gerstel from JLC for more info on this.
@@connormalloy8383 Thanks for the guidance.
Thank you for taking the time and explain the takeoff and estimating.. is there possibility for a concrete take off or do you offer particular classes please let me know jposada03@me.com Thank you!
Hey - happy to make some videos on concrete, we don't really teach this in our carpentry courses but it's really down to volume calculations. Let me know what type of concrete takeoffs you're trying to learn about
Thank you Connor, very helpful. Can you do a few videos on cost analysis such as cost analysis for partition wall (Drywall and metal stud framing)? Thank you!
Hey Jose - that would be a great video tutorial (cost comparisons). Happy to make a few of these and will post them later this summer
