    Hello, I'm new to the construction industry I'm still learning but I want to know how to calculate the square fee6 of a roof, we set the trusses and do the sheathing but often I get sent plans and asked to figure out the square feet, thanks in advance!

    • @connormalloy8383
      @connormalloy8383 2 місяці тому

      Hey there - you need to consider the roof factor when measuring the area of a roof. To do this, measure the orthographic area (length x width off the plan). Say this is a 10' x 10' shed. The area of the roof from the roof plan is 100sq. ft right? We're close, but this does not account for the roof slope. We need to multiply this 100sq ft. by the roof factor (added area) to account for the slope. For a 12/12 pitch, we multiply the 100sq ft by 1.4142 to get 141 sq ft. WAY more material right?? Look up a 'Roof Pitch Factor Chart' and keep this by your desk. Hope that helps.

    Can you schedule in tasks based per hour, not days only. When I used BuilderTrend few years ago it didn't have that option. All scheduling goes per day and some tasks are hourly so it is hard to make a proper schedule.

    • @connormalloy8383
      @connormalloy8383 2 місяці тому

      25%

    • @joesands8860
      @joesands8860 6 місяців тому

      25% is pretty high, unless you want a lot of waste, average is more like 15%.

    • @connormalloy8383
      @connormalloy8383 2 місяці тому

      Great question, and 'it depends'. Conventional waste factors for framing are +10% but this is dependent on the project complexity and how closely the dimensions of the build align with standard material sizes. Sheathing a 12/12 gable wall will produce more waste plywood than sheathing a flat roof facade. Same goes for flat roofs and hip/valley roofs. Get it? I would suggest you estimate /takeoff to the plans and start with a factor you are comfortable with (say 10-15%). When the framing scope is complete determine what your actual overage was to learn your actual waste factor. Track this overtime and you till learn how well your estimate and team does with material. I will say that the higher was factor you estimate (and deliver), your team will certainly make more waste!

    • @connormalloy8383
      @connormalloy8383 2 роки тому

      Hey Marlene, appreciate the feedback. I would not recommend using any service that estimates by email (and why I do not do this either). Estimating materials is depended on the quality of the drawings (the set in this video cost $20,000) but they don't share much of the existing conditions. You don't want to miss out on items not shown in the drawings. The other reason you need to learn to estimate your own work is ONLY YOU know the efficiency of your own labour (your team or subs). Pricing books are useless as your team will work fast/slow and you might pay them more/less than average labour rates. All to say, try and take a more in-depth Estimating course somewhere. Let me know if you need some links to this.
