No one should ever be fired for saying a word.

To be honest, it makes sense he was fired. If someone is on the air and live, they have to follow many many rules to broadcast that. So a simple slur could actually get them a hefty fine, so it makes sense why he got fired. Now, was it too harsh? Yes, a suspension would have been better suited. But you also have to consider they had serious training to actually go live in the first place. Assume the mic is hot, even if it does not appear to be hot. And people do need to actually grow some pair of balls. I'm gay and I don't wither away at the sight of a slur. It mainly just says how badly the other person was raised more so than me getting offended.
