FANzine Live - Crowdfunded Zines - House on Fire

Living the Line has been making some fantastic work, often with seed money from crowfunding. A great example is Matt Battaglia's House on Fire, a short graphic novel seemingly born out of the COVID pandemic-fueled dystopian wave of comics and GNs. With a raw script and some of the smartest three-color art you will see, this is a book worth looking over. We do just that in today's FANzine Live C...

kuš!, the Baltic Comics anthology, offers a dynamic array of creative work that stretches our notions of what comics are and can be. Beyond that, the "mini kuš!" series of longer-form minicomics allows for creators to take their ideas to the next level. We'll look at a sample, Doghair by Ganmu, in today's FANzine Live World Zines video. If you want a copy for yourself, go here: kushkomikss.ecra...

Small press comics cartooning legends Tim Corrigan and Ted Bolman got together in 1987 on a jam comic, and the results are amazing! Thank you so much for reviewing the book! I'll keep my thoughts to myself here about the ending. But I really enjoy hearing how everyone reads and interprets the whole book.
My pleasure! It was great, and I love stories that truly make you think.
It's wonderful to see some of these classic zines that don't deserve to be lost to obscurity or some university collection. Photocopy machines could be bad in the 90s, as well! You were really at the mercy of what was available back then.
Well said!
that page one logo is pretty darn cool. seems like ALL zines from the times have that it's-meant-to-be-black printing. was a kind of shrug-yr-shoulders way things seemed meant to be. you sure do pick interesting choices.
That logo was cool, wasn't it? On the blacks, I only made a deal out of it because this was really the first time since I started doing Classic Zine videos where it was REALLY obvious that the photocopier couldn't keep up with the artist. And that's worth pointing out, especially if a younger viewer doesn't realize the technological limitations we worked under (at the same time, WE HAD CHEAP PHOTOCOPIES! Democratization of technology!). And yeah, I do like keeping the mix fresh. Most all of these classic zines, I haven't read in 40 years! So it's just grab an interesting looking one and go for it!

Orange good
For zines? It works. 😊
Keep up the good work! I have fooled around with a couple 8 panel comics on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. I would love to do more for my own amusement but struggle with the story. Thanks for the renewed inspiration! ❤
Glad to help! Don't give up...if you're having trouble with story ideas, start from within. Tell the stories you know. IF you don't want to be autobiographical, use the stories you know as springboards to something else. That's how I wrote Heroes Now: Patriot...as a reflection on having lived through the end of the Cold War, on how the world around us has changed. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/2l0klwzd6jI/v-deo.html Everyone has stories to tell! Just try telling one or two of them. :-)
Ha! Can't believe someone held onto that for 35+ years! Hope you have a good Halloween!
You bet I did! 🎃
"zeigt" means "presents"... so the Zine is by Mr. Lorenz... thanks for showing (got me some Wobbys on your recommendation and they turn out to be very fine, thanks again)
Thank you for correcting my honest mistake!
"orange is one of my things" ... kinda weird statement these days ... but thanks for your videos 🤣
Oooh yeah.... you're right! Well, I didn't have any bronzing agents in mind when I said that. As you can tell, I'm pasty white these days! (But I'm glad you enjoyed the video!)
I remember back then being really jealous of (and impressed by) you guys and the local connections you were making, as I hadn't come across any other area cartoonists in my neck of the woods!
Well you certainly did something about it! The Mid-South Cartoonists Association ( facebook.com/midsouthcartoonists/ ) is VERY impressive.
thanks for the showcase. I no longer collect but i do like to see comic art.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
This is so good, wow :00
So glad you liked! Chris made a fantastic zine.
The Nib great looking magazine. I’ve heard of it before. Too bad the price no longer $5 and for someone living on the other ride of the pond the price would be just too high. Thanks for showing us.
Ugh! Sorry it didn't work out for you.
It never occurred to me there was a market for these. Could you tell us more about that? Where do you find them, what are common price points?
Oh wow, that's a number of broad topics. Perhaps a future Editor's Note? 😊
Thanks for the PDFs those were fun to read through.
Glad you like them!
I reallly appreciate your enthusiastic and informed looks at books and events. You’re a much needed voice in the world of zines!
Aw! Thank you so much! I'm just having fun, sharing the hobby I love
The was a Kevin Collier fanzine. Maybe the first small press zine I ever saw. 1984.
You know, I'm not sure that I have more than one or two Collier zines. I was more of a SPCE guy...that was my entry point into small press publishing.
I just acquired a bunch of fanzine books. This one and the Comet #3 (with the Wolfman on the cover). As well as Thunderbolt, Mysterious Adventures, The Nymphs In the Woods #3, Fandom Funnies #1& #2, Bombshell Ama-zine #'s 8, 9, 10, Infamous Funnies #1 and the Neal Adams Index. Plus 8 different FOOM books. I don't know much about the non FOOM books.
Outstanding! Some serious small press zine history there.
Chuck insists on giving me credit for the story, but really I just make suggestions and Chuck develops the entire script, layout, gags, and everything else himself. As the smart man once said, any project is about 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Chuck does all the hard work, and deserves respect for his efforts.
It's so great to see him back in comics, Jeff, and you surely had a part in that. 😊
"Handburger." A subset of "hand grenade."
🤣
Excellent, thank you for sharing! Any tips on selecting zines (aside from personal taste) from the tons there are to choose from?
Great question! I think that personal taste is the ultimate arbiter, but you can also look at elements like the price, the production values and the connection you may form with the creator. There might be other considerations...anyone else have ideas? Regardless, the volumes of zines out in the world require a certain amount of patience to wander through in order to get that proverbial diamond in the rough...especially when you purchase at a show like an SPX or a CXC. Take your time, be deliberate with your wallet...and have fun with the experience!
The video has an issue with the sound?
Sigh. Sorry. I'm on the road today, will fix when I get home tomorrow.
I reprocessed the video and uploaded it again. Here's the fresh link...now with 100% sound! Enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/ZcuV6O0-Blo/v-deo.html
I just picked up a copy of the fanzine, I hadn't known it existed. And the 21 comic issues sitll have
There's a second issue of the zine... 😉
@@FANzineLiveGuy Yikes! a new quest to follow
So glad you featured Wandering Star. Was lucky enough to catch it with the start of the series (I have 1-21, which I think is completish) and even get a few sketches featuring the characters.
It's a great one!
Interesting technique. The fake ads are fun.
They really are! And it looks seamless with the digital technology.
@@FANzineLiveGuy Great video.
@@bernieoconnor9350Thanks!
OH SHOOT ... did I give you a French language copy of A-T Walker #1? If so, let me know and I'll mail you the English version
Yup, it's French! "C'est la vie!"
That's quite the impressive haul:)
Gotta pick and choose your moments.... 😏
man youre making it to all the big shows!
When negotiating time away with the Mrs., one learns to make that time away count. I'd love to do a lot of smaller events, but they take more time and put more strain on her.
Fun fact about Sharon: She and John are still happily married to this day! They're both retired, and still making lots of art in their spare time!
That is so great! Thank you for sharing!
ah, Jonny Quest for me, too. Strongly recommend two from this year, but 'back-issues' or collected (I hope) by now, newly re-read: Batman/Dylan Dog, the best portrayal of Batman for me in years and at today's prices, a LOT of pages for a low price. Traveling to Mars constantly surprised me: a (very) laid-back travelogue filled with philosophical pondering, at least two very surprising moments--warding off a would-be spaceship war, finding out (logically) who actually populates Mars.
I think I'm more or less Batmanned out. Just too much. Traveling to Mars - I ended up missing out on the front end and am trade waiting. Sounds fantastic.
The subtle humour cracks me up. I hadn't heard of Pressman either but loved the in the know references.
Oh yeah! A classic 80s rise and fall epic, all in an 8-page mini.
Astonishingly enough, I have Dishman mini-comics, maybe all? Don't think I ever knew about Science Cruise. But I can see Vanna dumping whatsisname for Pressman. Nice showcasing here.
Thanks for showing this off! Definitely something different than what I've come across before!
Glad you enjoyed it! This "World Zines" theme is going to be a lot of fun. Some zines will look familiar, but others...well...it will be so exciting to explore!
Thank you!
I hope you enjoyed!
damn cool channel
Thank you! Tell your friends!
cool thanks for this video!
Glad you liked it!
Absolutely! Konyu has a great visual style
Love the art on this one!
Good ol' Steve Willis. Glad to hear he's still kicking and making zines! I was under the impression that some Morty Comix might have been a bit ephemeral, as in he drew and numbered them in sand, snow, dust etc. and posted the pics on his blog, which I believe he took down long ago.
Steve's doing great, churning out Cranium Frenzy zines and Morty Comix!
Pro tip: List all of the contributors for each zine under review with the description on UA-cam and also any links that you post on FaceBook or other aggregators. My experience in small press indicates that folks LOVE LOVE LOVE to see their own name in print.
Nice idea! I may just start doing that.
For many years, Slam Bang by Allen Freeman's Fan-atic Press was the gold standard of small press anthologies by which all others were measured.
This!
Thanks man! This first one is embarrassing.
@@AllenFreemanMediaGuru It was a harbinger of great things to come!
Thanks for the shout-outs! I think the MSCA members are doing good work in GB&S; it's been the first time being published for some of the contributors...
What a great group!
Congratulations! Super cool
Thank you!!
Cool stuff. How do you find out about the minis and zines? I used to get newspapers from comic shops (30 odd years ago) and saw stuff to order as well as once a member of an APA but I thought that was all defunct with the Internet.
You've hit on one of the conundrums of the modern age. I'm guessing that more people are making minicomics and zines than ever, but it's almost impossible to find out what is being made. Life was easier with a single source of information like Small Press Comics Explosion, but I think it fair to say that those days are long gone. I subscribe to a number of Facebook groups and follow a number of social media accounts across a host of platforms by searching using terms like "zines" "minicomics" "fanzines" "small press" and the like. I also look at the "likes" and "follows" of those whose work I enjoy/respect to see if we might have any potential common interests. It's a lot of work, and I know that the results are incomplete. Then there are other UA-cam channels found with similar search terms. Another VERY incomplete way to discover new minis and zines is to attend zine fests and zine-centric cons. You get a fantastic slice of comic/zine culture, but only insofar as it is represented by those tabling. There are some GREAT shows out there - every major city pretty much has such a venue, and many smaller towns have smaller shows - but make no mistake: Going this route takes a lot of time and commitment. At risk of being accused of tooting my own horn, your question is integral to why I started this channel in the first place. Very few people have the motivation to methodically build up a library of like minds over time. But...will they watch a 10-ish minute video every couple of days? That's my core premise, that people will do just that. So I'm doing my best to present a wide variety of works from all over time and space. Old zines, brand new ones...and, soon, zines from around the world. It's an admittedly incomplete approach, but the lesson I've learned is that One Single Source no longer exists. Thus, I do my best to help build awareness and appreciation of minicomics and zines (and related works). Hopefully, it satisfies the needs of some folks...or serves as a jumping-off point to people as they dive down their personal rabbit hole of self-published comics research.
I just posted a report from SPX 2024. Make sure to take a look!
Great episode! Y'all are doing unique stuff! 😄
Thanks so much!
Nice to see more MORTY COMIX, it's hard to review CRANIUM FRENZY without repeating "Steve Willis is a genius" over and over.😅
@@garyusher2876You aren't kidding. The man is creating on a whole other level.
That's funny; funny-odd not funny-haha; in that the SnowBuni bookmarks were printed three times x 100 each. I had not seen the second printing, as it was shipped directly to Rick Bradford of the Poopsheet Foundation. This video is the first time I had seen the results from the 2nd printing, and it is a misprint- the artwork was designed to be a full bleed, but apparently the art was reduced and given a "margin" around the edge front & back -but only for this printing! The first and third printings were done correctly. I would not have known otherwise, had I not seen this video. Very odd. I still have a stock of correctly-printed bookmarks at the time of this writing, but it is dwindling fast. Perhaps I should do a fourth printing.
Wow. I have been doing small press so long that I don't even remember making this version of my "SnowBuni Goes to Canada" story, which has been remade at least once since then with all-new artwork (same old jokes though). And I don't remember the "I Survived Expo '86" pinup, either, but it is true that a bunch of friends and I spent some time at Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada (the longest time I think I have visited that country to date). Good times.
Ummm...glad to be of service?
@@FANzineLiveGuy I gave away my entire fanzine collection to Edd Vick and Andy McQuiddy when my wife and I moved from Seattle in 1991. Most of my artwork went in the dumpster at the same time, to "lighten the load" while we were going to school. Hundreds and hundreds of pages gone, although frankly most of it was not of a collectable value. I enjoy seeing these snippets again after all these decades, and having a reflective mosey down memory lane.
hey Tom. thanks so much for the nice review of Broken B. Let me comment on my intention (not with the story but with the art approach). The "pixilation" of the cover photo is actually a Photoshop filter to give a painterly effect, hoping to go with the characters in watercolor. And the repeat of the front cover on the back (sans type) is an homage to the old Gold Key Comics of the early 1960s. They would do that as a pin-up. And speaking of Gold Key, you mention that there's some panels with a bold color behind the figures. Well, GK was crazy for an odd coloring scheme. No matter if it was Donald Duck, Tarzan or Lone Ranger, from panel to panel the sky might be blue in one, yellow in the next and green after that! My intention is to highlight those dramatic moments with a more intense color, hence a rich blue or red at times. I have a lot of fun, and the coloring is done in Photoshop ... each page is like a painting, quite time consuming and labor intensive but I think the results are worth it!
I would 100% agree, Larry! Thanks for those insights on your creative process.
One of my favorite Larry Johnson comics ever! This is the whole package... creepy, exciting, emotional, with Larry's amazing artwork in full color and quality production! One of the finest comics I've read this year, thanks for your review! :)
And thanks for mentioning TF! I was very happy with the way #276 turned out, with a tie in by John Muller to your upcoming comic! Also good to see a new mini from Ian Shires. Small press continues to rock, and it's great that you're out there doing your part to promote all of us creative folk!
