FANzine Live - Classic Zines - Beat Comics #1 featuring ThunderStorm
We have a great-looking hero comic in the FANzine Live Classic Zines video spotlight today, Beat Comics #1. Great art aside, I love the unique approach of telling the story from the perspective of the hero's real-life spouse. Take a look!

Tom no sound again during your intro.
Darn it! I'm removing the offending section. For what it's worth, I've started a new method upload the videos. Seems to work more reliably. Hopefully this problem will pass!
I do have to say, being a fan of War of the Worlds media, that this reflects H.G. Wells' work. The scene involving the H.M.S. Thunderchild, described as some sort of ironclad "ram," is only one chapter. It is a celebrated chapter as, spoiler alert for an over a century old story, scores a win and many folks thirst for more. Giving it a backstory against the 1898 invasion (mind you the astronomers in the books describe the launching of the cylinders as happening way before it lands while most modern versions start with the landing or shortly before) is in keeping with the story. I'd say, you need all three parts.
I will admit to not having read the source material. I have seen the films and of course listened to the classic Orson Welles radio broadcast. So you could very well be correct in your assessment. Problem is, the creators chose to publish it in three parts...so I have to judge each issue on its merits. I don't discuss vaporware. Sure, there could be issues with finances, logistics, etc. in only printing one part at a time -- I'll grant that. But is that my fault? Should I have not discussed that which was in front of my face? Also, they charged a lot of money for this comic. Because of that, I hold it to a higher standard than for, say, an 8-page photocopied minicomic. I praised the parts that I felt were worth praising...and discussed the rest. It's a quality looking comic and sounds like something right up your alley. If that's the case, I highly recommend it.
How would someone contribute to your zine?
At present, I don't have any zines in production that require new contributors. I may have an issue of Strange Times coming...that probably would need some. If you like doing hero comics, that might also be an option. Contact me via DM at Facebook (Phoenix Productions) if you want to pursue further!
That gene day story looks great!
It is!
Thanks so much for the kind review! The late Al Hanley was greatly influenced by CC Beck and the Fawcett Captain Marvel comics of the 1940s and 1950s. But he had his own style as well... CC Beck's Captain Marvel artwork was wonderful, but he never did anything as dynamic and complicated as Al's cover for this issue. Not only that, but CC Beck saw Al's work and said that Mr. Hanley was his personal choice to succeed him on SHAZAM! (the 1970s revival of Captain Marvel). He told me after he created this terrific work of art that he just got carried away... he couldn't stop adding to it! lol By the way, the original artwork was done at a large size... almost 11" x 17". Gene Day did do work in mainstream comics. He also did the STAR WARS newpaper comic strip that was circulated in the mid to late 1970s. I used to go the Nostalgia Newsstand when I lived in Greenville, NC (where I attended East Carolina University). My understanding is that this great comic shop is still around, although the address may have changed and they have adapted for the times, as it were. anyway, thanks for a fine review, you left a very big smile on this old small presser's face. :)
Great insights, SKeet! Thank you for sharing!
That center story looked incredible. Beautiful ink work. It reminds me of what Bernie Wrightson was doing in the 70s.
Wow, i remember skeeter from mid 70s fanzines i was getting as an 11 year old... used to order zines from the Comics Buyers Guide. Sadly all thrown away when my family moved.
Wait a minute! Damian Kilby is myself! I never knew i had a letter published in Mantra!
Thank you for the kind words and comments about the Mid-South Cartoonists Association’s The Good the Bad and the Sketchy books. We have a great group of artists who do cartoons and other styles of art (photography, sculpture, painting), and still promoting cartoons as art since 1987! 🎉
You folks are doing it right! Love your work, glad to help raise your profile!
Thanks for the kind words, Tom! Glad you enjoyed the reading experience; I'll share the word to the other GB&S contributors!
Just wanted to let you know that I'm glad I found your channel. I used to have a lot of independent comics and I know a place that sells a large selection of them. I'm sure you must have heard of them Forbidden Planet.
Tom, no sound on your intro!
#@$%@$#%!!~!! Blast that UA-cam uploading! I was out of town last week and couldn't make the changes in time. I guess I'll just let it go. Thanks for pointing it out, Larned!
The personal Laser printer is the same address as the Saddle-stich stapler.
Fixed. Thanks, Larned!
@@FANzineLiveGuy I have that exact printer
It's great, isn't it? Have you tried making minicomics on it? I find it's a champ for that purpose.
I've been a big fan of Steve Willis since the mid 1980s and even met him back in 2014 or so. Glad to hear he's still kicking around!

3:59 that looks a lot more like the style of Ivan Brunetti than Peanuts. I think this is the very first time I've seen Brunetti referenced anywhere!
And THAT'S a big reason why I love doing this video series. I have never heard of Ivan Brunetti. Off to Google I go...
I love your stuff man, i was wondering do you find all these zenes or do people send them to you?
Thank you! Glad you enjoy. I probably purchase (or in the case of Classic Zines, have owned) about 90-95% of what you see. Some folks send their new releases in for me to discuss, but a lot fewer than you would think. I'm always open to taking a look if people want to send anything along!
That is so cool man I just finished my first 8 page comic, do you mind if i send it to you?
You are welcome to send it along! Info at 23:55 of this video.
Great review. I am going to check out their web site.
Wise move! Try to get all 3 issues if you can.
Comics F/X was produced by the "Seattle Four," Edd Vick, Hal Hargit, Wade Busby, and myself. We decided to produce the newszine after we heard the news of SPCE's demise.
And you guys did a great job!
@@FANzineLiveGuy, it was a lot more work than we had anticipated! After a couple of years, we were totally burned out. Not only was it physically demanding in terms of time and focus, but we unavoidably covered controversial topics which were emotionally draining. Overall a good experience, but the project needed a bigger crew to serve the fandom properly.
Kevin Collier produced Fandom Times. It was the very first small press newszine that I had ever purchased. Must have been 1984, 1985? Not sure.
84-85 would make sense. Thanks, Jeff!
I did three covers (I think) for Self-Publisher after this issue, even though I had moved on to direct sales by then. Too much fun. I used to have that Guest Check comic from Dolphin Moon, it was a sister of Gosky Comics. Collier's titles prior to that were Fan Scene and Fandom Times, FYI.
No kidding! I think I only have that first issue, had no idea it kept going for a while. And thanks for the reminder of Collier's zines - I drew a blank!
Great video, Tom! Thanks for your reviews and the kind words about the only remaining (and always the best) co-op in small press! Your rock, and we appreciate you so much. :)
All three of the zines reviewed are top notch! I enjoyed your comments-- John Muller (one of the best of the best), Joe Ely Carrales (one of the most talented and original creators out there), and Kurt Erichsen (former UFO Chairman from the 1970s, a lifelong pal, and a super talent): great stuff all around. See you in the next TF! :)
That's very kind of you, Steve! As every video states, I am and remain a proud member of the United Fanzine Organization.
Thank you for the great review!!
My pleasure! I enjoyed your zines (if you couldn't tell)!
I remember Tom Cagle. Used to trade books with him. And checking my small press collection I do have a copy of the second issue of Starguy.
PS: I just subscribed to your channel.
Great to hear, Doug! Welcome aboard!
Thanks for liking my comic! Perhaps even more than I do because there are a lot of things that I wish were done better with the figure rendering, pacing, etc, and that back cover. I had adopted kid's rejection trauma that was badly triggered by recent events. The leonine character is Flexia Bast. The stars and other white and black effects were done with Sanford Cloud White Fluid (does that stuff even exist anymore?). The printing was done on Kurt Wilcken's dad's offset press. I am currently working as an electronic technician for the USPS Omaha P&DC. I am currently working on cartoon illustrations for a forthcoming book that is a fictional history of women's bowling. Oh yeah, I was finally clinically diagnosed with autism three years ago.
It was a great zine, Doug -- you should be proud of it, especially for your age at the time! I greatly appreciate the additional details.
there's an old paper that was used especially back in the 80s it was called Business Paper and you can get it in white and you can get it in a green kind of chart lined version too, it came in rolls, but it also came in 14x11 sheets, they were actually a little wider than 14 but the sides of the sheets had the peg holes in them for the old style printers and plotters, this was fairly cheap paper that you might find in several different kinds of settings medical, office, research, etc
That might be it! Thanks - I had no idea.
Thanks for the Moore link
Of course! It's a great video, tons of tips.
This is so cool! I got my start in zines basically at the same time. It was 1987 and me and some friends at my high school made a comic zine.
Yup! That's how a lot of us started. 😊
I should add that this story hails from the days when SnowBuni was losing her clothing in creative ways in almost every episode.
The good ol' days?
I seem to recall that, even though I have a writing credit, most of the story was detailed by cartoonist Juan Alfonso.
Appreciate the clarification! Always good to give credit where due.
Colleeen’s comics are so awesome! 😍 I hope you get the chance to read the whole series 💕
That's the plan!
My pleasure! It was an enjoyable read.
I really appreciate this mini review of my comic! so wonderful to have someone notice all the details 🤩The prophecy in the book actually sets up the entire next 3 books and I often overlook that myself because I wrote this story such a long time ago!
I am loving this channel! I lived in a small rural town back in the 80s and was never exposed zines at the time. This is an exciting new world to me. keep up the great work.
So glad you liked! Hopefully you're checking out zines today. There's so much out there!
Swarma shop? Coolness.
What an interesting project. I especially like the "plot twist" when the map shows where (I'm guessing) the scenes where drawn.
Oh yeah, this was fascinating from top to bottom. The great looking zine made with different techniques. The map. The unique webpage that looked more like something out of the TV show "Lost". And then to have the zine make it all the way to Toronto! Talk about dumb luck.
Great video, can you do a review on the book the best of Witzend?
Great suggestion! I love to keep it random, but a trip into Wally Wood's world once a year might be worthwhile....
@@FANzineLiveGuy Thanks, would love to see a video on the book, i might purchase it this month as a new year gift for myself with few other books. Comic books. :D
Excellent video and subject matter. I can't wait until this arrives. We'll done. I recommend Strange Times, by Fellrath and the works of Keith Newsome. If you are new to both, this book will be a great place to start.
Thank you so much, Joe!
I read Bubbles and The Comics Blogger. Are there any similiar you would recommend?
You're a step ahead of me with The Comics Blogger! I'm planning a video on that in the next month or so. Past those two...??? You're on the list to get Tetragrammaton Fragments from the United Fanzine Organization, and that's a good source of info while not a "newszine" as much as a club newsletter with reviews and other random goodness. I'm at a loss for anything else. Can you see why I decided to start this little FANzine Live thing? ;-)
Very refreshing to see a take on superheroes that isn't just a navel-gazing "dEcOnStRuCtIoN"
You said it better than I! It's just...escapist "hero" storytelling. And fun!
My name is Terry Austin. Believe it or not! Love this video.
THE Terry Austin? 😮
@FANzineLiveGuy I'm affraid not!
@@ruthlessjobberAll good! (But I was about to go all fanboy about this...)
this is dope I'm digging you vids
Thank you! Tell your friends!
Giveaway is CLOSED. Maybe next time, folks!
Thanks for sharing. I wasn't aware of this comic. Really enjoy your videos.
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks so much for picking it up! I love the review -- your comments regarding style and process were all spot on.
My pleasure! It was a great read. The vignette-fueled "slice of life" genre was big back in the 80s, but few have mastered it today like you did IMHO. 👍
This is some great stuff. I just don't find many zines or mini comics anywhere anymore.
It's hard on the surface to find them, agreed. Perhaps I need to do a video on that. In the interim, make sure to check out the links in the show notes! You can get the highlighted zines and connect with the creators through them.
I'm not familiar with the creators and would be interested in being inntroduced via a opy of Sycamore.
Congratulations, @EdwardMooreJr! Sycamore is yours! Please get in touch with me through any of the social channels identified at linktr.ee/phoenixprods/ to make arrangements to get you this incredible publication.
Thank you so much for reviewing the book! I'll keep my thoughts to myself here about the ending. But I really enjoy hearing how everyone reads and interprets the whole book.
My pleasure! It was great, and I love stories that truly make you think.
It's wonderful to see some of these classic zines that don't deserve to be lost to obscurity or some university collection. Photocopy machines could be bad in the 90s, as well! You were really at the mercy of what was available back then.
Well said!
that page one logo is pretty darn cool. seems like ALL zines from the times have that it's-meant-to-be-black printing. was a kind of shrug-yr-shoulders way things seemed meant to be. you sure do pick interesting choices.
That logo was cool, wasn't it? On the blacks, I only made a deal out of it because this was really the first time since I started doing Classic Zine videos where it was REALLY obvious that the photocopier couldn't keep up with the artist. And that's worth pointing out, especially if a younger viewer doesn't realize the technological limitations we worked under (at the same time, WE HAD CHEAP PHOTOCOPIES! Democratization of technology!). And yeah, I do like keeping the mix fresh. Most all of these classic zines, I haven't read in 40 years! So it's just grab an interesting looking one and go for it!
