lets check the fuel tank sending unit resistance, 2002 Trailblazer
This is quick to the point demonstration of checking the resistance of a fuel level sensor on a 2002bTrailblazer. We are checking at what I feel is the quickest easiest place for this quick check, and that is the C101 connector adjacent to the underhood fuseblock.
One thing not in the video is that you must NOT jab anything large into the wiring terminal. Not here, not ever anywhere else either. Doing so can spread open the connection and then you have a bad connection that you might not have had before. In fact there is antest called a "pin drag" test where you use a new mating terminal pin and test for tightness in all suspect wiring terminal connectors. They need to be snug.

Testing fuel level gauge on a 2005 Yukon by sending Class II serial data instructions. The messages sent mimic the messages the PCM sends. The 3 byte header is "A88310" The secondary ID is "12". And the fuel level is a hexadecimal value between "00" and "FF" where "00" is 0 percent and "FF" is 100 percent.

This sensor is required for all electro-viscous fan clutch systems. It cannot be eliminated as long as an electro-viscous fan clutch is used.

I use a bluetooth OBD2 adapter as the interface between my android phone and the vehicle data network. The brand Inuse most often is a Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBDII available on Amazon for about $15 US dollars.
What are you supposed to be showing
Is there something specific you didn't understand in the written description?
So the inner gear is permanently connected to the intermediate shaft splines and the outter gear is permanently attached to the cv shaft...these do not move...what moves is the collar sleeve...the collar sleeve moves forward so it is connected to both the inner and outer gears allowing the axle to then be connected? Is this correct?
Pretty much, yes. Each gear is splined to a shaft, either the intermediate shaft or the CV axle shaft. Each gear has teeth on the outside diameters and these teeth get coupled together by the collar that is moved by the shift fork driven by the actuator. The actuator (at least an original one) has a coil spring inside so if the external teeth of the gears are not aligned and the shift collar cannot easily slide over the mismatched gears then the coil spring of the actuator compresses allowing the actuator to go full travel. When there is a little movement of either of the 2 gears and the teeth move into alignment the coil spring will move the shift fork and collar coupling the gears together.
Trying to diagnose my highway speed vibration...my disconnect also has a lot of play... I know both cv axles are moving...but is there also movement occurring at the intermediate shaft from the driver side cv axle? Does the driver side cv axle keep the intermediate shaft moving? Or is it all moving but just not being connected? This would help me diagnose if this bearing failure from I side the axle disconnect a possible suspect in my highway speed vibration concern
Yes, the intermediate shaft is nearly always spinning. Generally the front driveshaft spins due to friction inside the transfer case clutch pack and the rotation of the drivers side cv axle. It may surprise a lot of people that most often, while rolling down the highway the intermediate shaft is actually spinning backwards. When cold at 65 mph mine spins about 1200 rpm backwards. This drops to about 700 or so once all the fluids are fully warmed up. Don't discount the possibilty of a driveshaft being out of balance. It happens.
I did replace the disconnect unit. To address the old comment that a tri-pod moves this way, NO, it does not. The movement shown here is a failure of the outer bearing of the disconnect. There should be no such movement as seen here in this video.
Did you replace the 4x4 disconnect?

Hi I'm looking at this on mine. If I can spin one front tire and the other does not spin could it be this box? I can push in to engage with my finger but it doesn't connect to the other wheel.
You might need to push in where the actuator pushes in, using something like a long screwdriver, and slowly turn the passenger wheel at the same time so the two gears get lined up. If you can push all the way in where the actuator pushes, and spin the front passenger wheel, with neither the drivers side wheel nor the front propshaft (between the transfer case and front differential) turns then it is possible that this disconnect has something broken inside. But it could also be something broken on the front differentail.
@@thomasjbaker7688 Thanks for responding! I took that disconnect off and opened it and it's fine. I guessing it's the diff that's messed up but it's new it was replaced last month. But the transfer case and front driveshaft lock up so It almost has to be the diff
@@IkeCoblentz Maybe drain the front differential fluid and check for metals? Are all the splines OK on the CV shafts and intermediate shaft?
@@thomasjbaker7688 Yes the splines look fine. Ok I'll look for metal
I should not have used an auto-ranging meter. It would have displayed the 5 volts vs 0 volts better. Anyway, you can see the black test lead is grounded by sticking it a seam of the PCM. Any good ground will do. The red test lead is connected to the dark blue wire in terminal "D" of the harness connector. You can tell which terminal is which by looking for terminal "F" which has no wire in it. That tells you which end is terminal "A" and which is "F". When the key is ON there should be a 5 volt supply at terminal "E". This powers the sensor. There is a second 5 volt signal sent from the PCM on the blue wire at terminal "D". This one is not for power. It is where/how the PCM senses the speed. As the fan rotates the speed sensor grounds out the 5 volt signal 6 times per revolution. When grounded the 5 volt signal drops to 0 volts. This is what I am showing in this video. I did not disconnect any wires, I used a 'backprobe' to poke into the harness connector and get the connection. If you don't have a backprobe a small thin sewing needle sometimes works. I have another video where Inshow the system tested on a workbench. There I have to supply the 5 volts for the sensor and I measure continuity from the terminal "D" to ground at terminal "C". ua-cam.com/video/g_xTDsiiugc/v-deo.htmlsi=h73gn3zd3zvRYJyA

I have my disconnect on the bench. I am rebuilding my engine and I am cleaning and repacking this disconnect before putting it back in. I will bench test the actuator. I just find it seems so mickey-mouse to have a little hobby motor and plastic gears operating the the axle disconnect. I guess it works though so who am I to argue?
I would closely inspect the outer bearings that accept the passenger side CV axle stub. Also the seal there. These are a very common failure point. I have read where some have replaced the original outer bearing with one that is just a little wider but still allows the original seal to be installed. The idea is the wider bearing carries the load better?
Your seatbelt light doesn't come on either. Did you do that or is it a common issue?

Just saved me some trouble thx
It's the ignition switch. My 04 does it every winter. Moisture gets into the unit and then it acts dumb. Unknown driver message different warning lights flashing and truck door chime going off randomly. Truck always runs and operates fine just annoying beeping. I used to switch it out every year after winter but I switched the radio to aftermarket and the annoying beeping runs through the radio to driver door speaker. So with new radio there is no beeping so I just drive it and let the lights on the dash dance away. It's like Christmas every day in a Chevrolet
This is NOT the ignition switch here. Read the description of the video. This is a demonstration, NOT a problem report.
Exactly a waste of time
How do you test it
In vehicle or on the bench? Off the vehicle you need to connect 12 Volt power to terminal D, ground to terminal B and then ground out terminal A to activate the actuator. Remove the ground from terminal A and it should retract. I have another video showing this being done but the connections are not shown clearly. ua-cam.com/video/SpVxIPz5oN8/v-deo.html
@@thomasjbaker7688 I can hear the motor when I reset it but the switch for 4wd is stuck in in auto but I can engage 4wd with a screwdriver and locks in... Sometimes I can hear the transfer case motor and sometimes I don't
@@terrywilliams2860 Is the "service 4wd" light on or has it been on before? Best is to read the codes, but a standard "code reader" won't do it.
@@thomasjbaker7688 code is C0321 transfer case lock I have switched out the switch motor part under the dash and the front actuator and still can't 4wd to work
@@terrywilliams2860 Ahh, well the transfer case lock circuit goes to the shift encoder motor under the center of the truck. Not the axle disconnect up front. What the "lock" is is an electrically released, spring loaded brake that stops the shift motor from turning when it is a given mode and isn't being shifted. Do you have a test meter to check voltages? There is an orange wire that goes from the ATC fuse under the hood all the way down to the shift motor. This wire gives the positive side of the brake circuit power. The ground side of the brake circuit goes from the shift motor to the TCCM (4wd control module) in the left side of the dash. This wire is Tan colored. The brake is released when powered and on when not powered so when the system needs to shift then the TCCM grounds out that tan wire which releases the electric brake and then the TCCM turns the shift motor to where it needs to be,,, then disconnects the ground for the brake so that the brake is on again and holds the shift motor in place. You probably have a bad wire somewhere, either that orange wire is not getting power down to the shift motor or the tan wire is bad going from the shift motor to the TCCM in the dash. It vould also be just a bad connection.
Mine does that when im driving.
can you show how you set this up? i cant get my misfire info to go green on 04 trailblazer, thanks
