#181 - phiik & Lungs breakdown 'Carrot Season' - Album Alchemy
On the heels of their first Euro trip, today’s guests, phiik and Lungs/LoneSword, have seen their brand of innovative one-of-one rap garner its most success yet. They have impressed new crops of listeners with each and every passing day, who are spellbound by their lyrical wizardry, sharp sense of humour, and unique production choices.
On their latest album Carrot Season, the phiik & Lungs world of rap expands to incorporate wrinkles of more traditional boom bap drums, but still with a contemporary twist, and still with the alien-level rap acrobatics we’ve come to know and love from the New York-based duo.
In today’s episode, we discuss their thoughts behind their polarizing style of rap, working with producer savant OLASEGUN on Carrot Season, how the shift in sound from the Another Planet series to Carrot Season influenced their approach to their raps, and much more!
Intro (0:00).
The Plug (0:56).
The Interview (2:26).
The recent BIGGER THREE TOUR phiik & Lungs completed in Europe (2:34).
phiik & Lungs’ perspective on polarizing audiences, and the infamous Top Shelf Premium freestyle (10:59).
The heightened accessibility of Carrot Season (16:51).
How important the value of doing something new and fresh is for phiik & Lungs’ creative process (20:39).
Partnering with OLASEGUN on Carrot Season (25:18).
The thought process behind the consistent beat switches on Carrot Season (29:57).
How the drums and beat switches influenced phiik & Lungs’ rapping approach on Carrot Season (46:08).
Upcoming projects from phiik & Lungs (57:19).

#180 - E L U C I D breaks down "REVELATOR" - Album Alchemy
Переглядів 1,6 тис.21 день тому
If I had to think of one word to describe today’s guest, E L U C I D, and his latest album, REVELATOR, it would be “fearless” in every sense of the word. Fearless in its sonic direction that infuses industrial noise, South Asian / Middle Eastern instrumentation and more, into this one-of-a-kind take on hip-hop. Fearless in its boundaryless, ultra-poetic vocal stylings. And also fearless in its ...
#179 - ØKSE INTERVIEW (w/ Dash Lewis)
Переглядів 108Місяць тому
When thinking about today’s guest, it reminds me of that famous Shakespearian saying, “what’s in a name?” Since for certain artists, their name can be completely meaningless, having no bearing on the kind of music they make, or has no insightful backstory for how the name came about. But for ØKSE, our guest in today’s episode, their name actually says a lot about their art, and what they stand ...
#178 - Yungwebster INTERVIEW (w/ Dash Lewis)

The worlds of electronic and ambient music have been guests within the world of hip-hop for a long time now. Artists like Travis Scott have successfully integrated these two previously separate guests into hip-hop to great effect. Though at its core, the music of a Travis was hip-hop first, with other ambient and electronic sounds added into the mix on top of that. But with the music from today...
#177 - J.U.S & Squadda B INTERVIEW
Переглядів 492 місяці тому
Bruiser Brigade has been slowly but surely building a killer crew and catalogue of work - with us today are two of its rising stars. J.U.S is an entertaining and distinctly unique lyricist, producer, and engineer. Squadda B, formerly of Main Attrakionz fame, helped shape the dominating 2010s psychedelic cloud rap scene, and is still innovating and pushing his craft to new places as a solo rappe...
#176 - Alaska & steel tipped dove breakdown 'Reverberations of a Dead Man's Ego' - Album Alchemy

As I get closer and closer to my 30s, mortality, the future outlook of society. and my fading youth are consistently ideas that are occupying my mind. So art that speaks to these topics in a thoughtful and insightful way have been especially appreciated as of late. But unlike other genres out there, rap is still quite young. Therefore, there isn’t necessarily a ton of artists out there who are ...
Conversation Pieces - Why Lawd... a cautionary tale of f****** up a good thing
Переглядів 1753 місяці тому
NxWorries’ Why Lawd came to me at the perfect time in my life. A time where I find myself in the best most healthy and rewarding relationship I’ve ever had with a remarkably beautiful and smart woman, who is sweeter than [insert sweet substance]. So the thought of it ever coming to an end feels mortifying. It’s for all these reasons that Why Lawd has had a profound impactful on me. It is an ode...
#175 - Seafood Sam INTERVIEW

Music and art in general is special because it can’t be quantified, calculated, explained, or re-created through algorithms. Surely, through the rise of AI you can create technically accurate facsimiles of music. But that special IT factor that turns music from simply aesthetically pleasing to special, cannot be replicated by robots, and is often impossible to put into words. With today’s guest...
#174 - ShrapKnel & Controller 7 breakdown ‘Nobody Planning to Leave’ - Album Alchemy
Переглядів 2453 місяці тому
Likely due to my incessant thirst for control and structure, whenever I take in a piece of art and consider how the creator approached the making of this thing I find so great, my mind immediately assumes that there was this rigid, almost scientific forethought put into every detail. And while some artists work with more of a structure than others… as you will learn in this free-wheeling conver...
#173 - Wave Generators INTERVIEW

As purely a consumer of music, one of the most rewarding and genuinely valuable things to me is to be able articulate why a particular piece of art resonated with me. It’s a big reason why I started this podcast. Even without being a creator of the music myself, I think there’s a lot of insight and provocative thought that someone like me can provide, that can hopefully colour your experience w...

'Black sheep' is an idiom used to describe a member of a group who doesn’t fit in with the rest. Now while this is often used with a negative connotation, I feel there’s a flipside to this concept that can be a positive. Where not exactly fitting into any one group can allow you to pull from many different influences, and combine that all together into something one-of one. This is a dynamic I ...

Making a name for yourself as an artist with a unique perspective, and a unique sound is impressive in its own right. But doing so outside of a major hub for hip-hop, Edmonton, a city in Western Canada, is an even more impressive achievement. This is what today's guest, Cadence Weapon has done. Cadence Weapon is here to discuss the making of his new album, ROLLERCOASTER, and gives his take on h...
#170 - Cavalier INTERVIEW
Переглядів 4706 місяців тому
Throughout my experience listening to music, one of the most important life lessons I’ve learnt is that of patience. I’ve had too many instances of an album initially not grabbing me, but then as I continued to revisit it and give it an open and curious mind… I fell in love with it months, and sometimes years after I initially heard it. Art has a way of connecting you to the present. No better ...

Intro (0:00). The Plug (0:43). The Interview (1:49). As a longstanding champion of the music from today’s guest, it’s been such a rewarding experience to witness the growth and incredible artistic vision found on Temple Needs Water. Finally got my hands on that episode like a week ago, this is beyond dope, Elucid's train of thought, sources of inspiration and details that he picks up in music is what really strikes me the most. Thank you for this conversation and never give up what you do, cause content that you make is really unique
Happy to hear this, thanks for the support!!
E L U C I D is a dope fucken rapper, been !
100%!!!
See these guys cause arguments in twitter every time a clip is posted. I don’t regret checking them out!
Glad you did! You're tapped into an elite wave... thanks for tuning in fam!
🥷🖤⚔️ EAST!
!!!!
Damn another Sadistik fan in Toronto.. one of few
Glad to know there's more of me out here haha
Haven't watched it yet, but I'm about to do that for sure. Do you take suggestions from subscribers? If, so it would be interesting to see 454 or YL and Zoomo on your podcast, i haven't seen a lot of recorded interviews with RRR on youtube and these guys definitely deserve more shine
I definitely take suggestions! I'm a fan of all of those guys, so would I'd certainly be open to having them on. Let me know what you think of the episode when you finish!!
Complementary podcast, great questions without bullshitting, keep it up 🎉
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate the kind words.
Is there a way I would be able to contact you through DM? I'm doing a research project on rap & linguistics and I would love if you could guide me through some artists' careers and find reputable information regarding their work.
Email me at qlctv.podcast@gmail.com
Whenever i listen to elucids solo work i feel like i have to fully pay attention and re listen again and again . With Woods i can grab on to the common language of pitch black humor you gain from being raised in southern africa and having a keen understaning of the political forces that move shit around these parts. But elucid demabds that i sit my ass down and really grasp at every word. Reminds me of what it felt like reading english books when i could barely speak it
That makes a lot of sense. E L U C I D's music has this way of burrowing into my psyche with repeated listens, that very few artists accomplish. It always tends to just resonate more and more with time
XOLO is arguably the most interesting song I’ve heard a while.
Yeah structurally it's just so ambitious... can't imagine how hard it must be to accelerate your flow up mid-verse like that
Come back to Toronto E L U C I D!
If we spread the word and run up his numbers enough, maybe our wish will be granted... one can only dream, I NEED to hear this album live goddamn
Great convo! ELUCID makes resistance music and Im here for it. Free Palestine
🍉🍉🍉
Underrated channel and a severely underrated rapper. Great pod, thank you for this.
I appreciate the support. E L U C I D is a genius, I expect he will receive the love he deserves before it’s all said and done. Thanks for tuning in 🙏🏽
Damn. I"m sitting here preparing my review/analysis and this drops. What the hell can I say that is not already said in this interview!?! Seriously great conversation.
You're too kind Skye! Hope this conversation helped sparked some thought for your review, excited to listen to it.
Love you nerds
@@august_truly haha thank you!
You're so good dude thanks for this
And thank you for listening! Appreciate the support
Excellent conversat
Thanks fam, glad you enjoyed
Amazing convo!!!
Thanks for tuning in!!
Revelator is what people in the mainstream think yeezus is, what an amazing fucking album
REVELATOR will be remembered in time, that's for sure!! Thanks for listening!
Great conversation! Thanks for letting us in on it
Happy to have you tune in!!
@@rapmusicplugpod ❤️
the explanation of slum of disregard is mind blowing 🤯
Fr, it adds such an extra level of realness to that track goddamn
nice
thanks fam
killing it man
much love, so happy with how this turned out!!
These guys some really inspirational dudes, would love to see another interview in the future
Likewise, their latest album is freaking insane!
Dope. Their album is so good, man! Love from Brazil!
That's awesome to hear that this thing is making its way to Brazil. Appreciate the support, and yes, this album is phenomenal!!
So happy you got these guys on here! Great interview. Thanks for your work!
Glad you tuned in and enjoyed this!
Still waiting on the collab albums he mentioned at the end...I know that Benjamin Booker project is going to be incredible
Based on Doves, my anticipation for that Benajmin Booker project is sky high!!
tired of seeing loser bandcamp rappers known for stealing from fans and producers in the recommended vids. sleep is trash. ask him about if he plans to rectify his dishonesty issue next time, perhaps ask about his proclivity for protecting predators in the rap game too despite having full knowledge and not caring. the receipts are out there but no one seems to care. these folks would rather act like celebrities online whilst selling 12 albums on Bandcamp to their other rapper friends but never actually doing anything except be a trash human. that tiny Bandcamp rap scene is cooked.
this makes me wanna listen to his music even more, i guess it's time to revisit I Told Bessie before the new one drops
Absolutely!! Thanks for watching this bro
Insightful interview. Looking forward to hearing more music from Yungwebster...
Glad you enjoyed, and likewise! What he's got coming seems super intriguing...
great interview ! huge fan of the record and glad to have this insight
Appreciate you tuning in! I know he rarely, if at all, does interviews, so it was an honour to have him on. Glad you enjoyed it, and goddamn the record is so dope.
s/o web, this is amazing to see 🤍
Thanks for tapping in!!
I’d love for him to do a project with JUNIE.
that would be dope, JUNIE is sick
1:07:13 that “t-shirt bar” conversation is truly important for a lyricist to grasp. Appreciate this.
100%, Dan was really on point with that comment. Glad you appreciated it!
I love discovering smart people who appreciate the brilliance of someone like Ka . He's truly not just a lyrical genius, but he's a literary savant . A genre unto himself, his approach and intention with his narrative just has a way of making even dope hip hop feel almost juvenile in comparison. It's high-minded yet grounded. It's not pretentious like say a Lupe project .
totally agree, thanks for tuning in!!
Sadistik what a freaking great artist. Love his music cant wait to see him live again
Still haven't seen him live yet, I'm sure he's a incredible performer
Where can I find the picture of Jpegs pants he was talking about?

need mor kon interviews out der. this dude is a sick rap cat!
he's dope as hell!
I love this dude. I grew up in South Africa the things he says you have had to have lived there to understand.
Glad to hear that it rings true and authentic to you.
I've been enjoying the album and certainly relate to the subject matter. I really enjuyed the interview too. Great work!
This is what we need to hear.
Indeed! This is must-listen for 2024
KEEP IT UP G LOVE THESE PODCASTS. hope to one day be interviewed by u dawg keep it up !
Thanks so much fam, appreciate the support!!
brother that was so beautiful. this and sage’s album are probably my albums of the year and you’ve given me a new appreciation for the genius of nxworries
That's so nice of you to say, really glad you feel that way! NxWorries really outdid themselves... this album really moved me.
Child Actor is one of the most talented producers in the art rap genre (peace to Fake Four)...
100%
I THINK HE WAS TALKING ABOUT "WU WEI" AT 8:39.
Great interview. Sam has 1 of the best albums of 2024.
Yeah it's so damn impressive, thanks for tuning in!
Where’s he’s been? Hasn’t dropped in over a year
Back in the day, a year wouldn't be too long of a wait. Plus there's a Mutant Academy album that is set to drop soon, so you'll hear him on that
@@rapmusicplugpod yo he on the album?? Quelle on der too. AOTY!!!!
Knxwledge has been among my favorite all-time musicians for a while and I've been a fan of NxWorries since the Link Up & Suede EP. I had to wear that record out while waiting for Yes Lawd! I totally agree with your thoughts on this. I can listen to Yes Lawd! and Why Lawd! as fun albums with pimperific moments, and it also has that classic "begging and pleading" sound from the 70s and 80s etc. But if you are in a relationship and want to key in on the lyrics, both albums have moments where you can put yourself in the mindset of reminding yourself not to be that guy lmao. Like yes, there's always other options out there, but if you have a good thing going just work on that! The four track run of Where I Go, Daydreaming, FromHere and FallThru is unfair. Just like you said it's a breezy fun listen with enough layers if you want them.
Appreciate your thoughts on this. There's definitely good reminders to be a good partner on all their albums, but this one was the most coherent statement IMO. And yes that 4-track run is CRAZY. Thanks for tuning in!!
Timbaland fathered indian samples in Hip Hop and Pop.
His work was vital on that front
