Chris Packham: Overgrazing is Killing the New Forest (2019)
Переглядів 662Рік тому
🎬TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham has called for fewer animals to be allowed to roam the New Forest. He claims if nothing is done the national park will be left "bereft of life" due to overgrazing. In defense of the current grazing numbers, Natural England said it has spent the past six years assessing the habitats and "it would not be possible or desirable to set a target number" of a...

🎬Pine martens are extremely rare in Britain. But, this is the second time anyone has filmed a sighting in the New Forest - with one first caught on camera in 2016. The mammals are elusive members of the weasel family. Experts say pine martens were widespread throughout the country but their numbers began declining in the south around 200 years ago due to habitat loss and predator control measures.

Beautiful
Is it possible to get permission to use clips of this for my own vlog work?
The guy serving at 0:45 looked uncannily like Leonard Rossiter
And its still held every year.
No way is that 400 square miles not even 100 square miles but a lovely video
Do you mean the size of the New forest?
Love this. The film was part of my childhood. Just wiped a tear at Josh Gifford
Did not know the crown estate owned the new Forrest.
I remember as a little lad on the slide at Bolingbroke Playground in Battersea. Watching her come past on her way to Brighton having come through Clapham Junction. All of her engine included in the Pullman colours. Hope they bring her back we need nostalgia. I'd book to ride on her.
Bring her back.
Innocent days no WiFi no phones No druggies cheap petrol cheap Food
That’s my great great uncle
brilliant.. great way of life .. happy days indeed. i hope they are still at it.
Brilliant. Doesnt look "bitterly cold" though, like Jack said. Nobody wearing gloves and no frost. 😉
These are new forest folk. Gloves? 😊

Another bonus of these old vidoes is seeing the cars that are now gone. The names still spring to mind.
Fantastic......
I grew up around the New Forest and often heard of this. Interesting film.
I hope that England's beautiful culture and country are preserved for all time. Especially in these current days of globalists trying to destroy the precious history of so many peoples.
18:40 „These large wasps“? What’s their specific name, please?
Hi, These are Hornets.
@@newforestarchive Well, t'was you called then „large wasps“, but what is their specific name? Hornets? Yeah, I guessed as much but hornets can still be many things. It’s not that I haven’t tried to find out and I do think it could be the European hornet (Vespa crabro) but is it?
@@Hallands. Quite right these are Vespa crabro, filmed in the New Forest. They are larger than the Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina), which are now in the UK. The Asian Hornet is more of a threat to our bee population. With two nests found in Southern England in 2021.
@@newforestarchive Thanks, but I think they’re smaller than the Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia)
@@Hallands. Hi, The Asian Giant is a different species.
Superlative, evocation of place and time which ignites history, rights and wrongs……. Now I understand what happened to my own beloved Enfield Chase north of London whoose scraps I grew up in as a child…… and which has ‘shaped’ me Thank you for this 29 year old ‘gem’……..
I recall seeing this, as a kid. Thanks for posting!
The narrator doesn’t sound like Barnaby.
He was a lot younger then, so sounds more like Bergerac.
Beautiful place ; we dont hv them in ireland , the english cut 'em all down
It is beautiful to see the rhythm of life of our ancestors, as well as the natural world that we are part of, body and soul. Ytene, lovely.
I hate snakes
Oh dear. Whatever you do, don't watch this: ua-cam.com/video/es6qMDL8NeQ/v-deo.html
Very boring out of date production.
Are you, by any chance, the John Nettles from the show Midsomer Murders, aka Tom Barnaby? If so, how cool. Thank you for this video, either way. Quite an interesting subject.
Hi, yes it is Tom Barnaby.
Fantastic cinematography
Absolutely beautiful to watch and listen to to calm the senses. ❤
Have you explored the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean stunning very ancient oaks and chestnut and beech trees.😊
Brilliant documentary loved every atmospheric second of it
It is interesting to note that when the BBC first released this on video, they decided to call it 'Ytene The Ancient Forest', removing the word 'England's', so as to not sound too parochial. 🎬newforestgateway.org/Media-Archives/Film-Archive Has lots more New Forest Films
THANKYOU MR BARNABY...
Back then we always went on outings in our Sunday best! Great documentary. I also remember picnicking on roadside verges perilously close to passing traffic and rattling as lorries went rushing by whilst we tucked into our sarnies!
Connifer plantations are so sterile.
That is true although conifer plantations are a great refuge for Red Squirrels as Greys prefer deciduous woodlands.
Great all round when's the next one!
So what IS the rare fungus that only grows on the dung of horses grazing natural pasture?? It would have been good to know! Some of us are interested in such things. Yes, I know this film is 30 years old, but it falls short of the standards of the time, when I was also a scriptwriter.
Not knowing the actual name of the fungus that grows on horse dung is perhaps not as important as the knowledge now gained that such a fungus exists. It is the script's gift that keeps on giving.... 🍄Nail Fungus (Poronia punctata) ua-cam.com/video/7oP84ZfhoEY/v-deo.html
It’s a shame the scriptwriter didn’t know a bit more about forestry, or have a s riot editor to corral things like confusion between pollarding and coppicing. Not a bad programme, but lightweight when it came to giving the historical truth about how a privileged elite took everything and limited the commoners to the bare minimum on land that had once been theirs to share. Andnothing has changed. Britain is still infected with the cancer of feudalism that holds a tiny minority can own all the land and its resources ( think of Crown rights over any mineral wealth you might discover on your property). This suppression of or people’s rights will never end until the populace stops tugging its forelock to the rich and powerful and gets on with serious land and wealth reforms.
Script editor.

the words, “hunters, farmers, foresters” become despicable in this context, signaling the demise of old-growth woodlands
You mad bro?
EAT more meat
Its not an original forest but man made by Willian the Conqueror who forcibly removed the original English for his hunting activities.
I wonder what changes have happened since 1995. Nature will survive in spite of us I believe.
if you are that concerned why not go and look?
Packham needs to get a proper job as he is obviously desperate now. Compared to hundreds of yrs ago there are far far fewer deer in the forest
You are quite right, there are fewer deer now, as their numbers are controlled. This item is about livestock.
Not sure quite why the introductory music would be Irish (at least it sounds Irish to me) considering this documentary is about The New Forest in Southern England ! We have an ancient forest atop Shooter's Hill, in S.E.London, which the local people have had to battle to have protected status against its destruction by construction companies. Once such a forest is destroyed, it cannot be so easily replaced, nor should it be.
We know that Chris is 'Marmite' (love or hate) to many people. He is however, in a position to raise public awareness of a perceived problem. The important thing is to encourage dialogue between all the interested parties. Commoners, Verderers and the various national bodies. Get the balance right to encourage, tourism, wildlife and farming. If there are to be farming subsidies across the UK, make sure they are fair to all. If we avoid personal comments, a constructive narrative begins.... There is much to be gleaned from visiting the various websites including: newforestcommoner.co.uk verderers.org.uk newforestassociation.org newforestassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/NF_Grass_Final_Report.pdf hlsnewforest.org.uk/projects/verderers-grazing-scheme/
