Reactive Dog! Root causes and training solutions for different types of reactivity
There are different underlying causes for dog reactivity, and depending on the dog as well as the context we need to apply different approaches.
Ultimately we aim to change the dogs emotional réponse but when this is not a realistic goal - we can at least teach dogs to focus and develop self control in order to manage situations that were previously unfathomable.
In this video we look at 3 different dogs and the approaches for their training.

I need to know HOW to stop my Border Collie from chasing cars. She's a little rescue and terrified of anything with wheels.
Can't understand conversation or what's going on.
Extremely helpful video. I fostered a really shy/fearful 4yo mixed breed last week. We’ve made some progress with traffic and bedtime. She still doesn’t quite trust me yet, so great lesson to take it at her pace rather than mine. Subscribed!
Glad it was helpful! Welcome aboard!
Questions about reactivity? Leave them here and we can discuss!
If the gsd is combustible why is there no muzzle? Lack of safety and reckless
🤦
Great info! But respectfully…the music while talking, distracts and is extremely irritating.
This is s fantastic video!
Glad you enjoyed it - appreciate the kind comment.
....dogs are colorblind, so maybe don't hire color blind painters? What's the lesson here again? I'm confused. Lol
You're a fool if you accept a job where they don't designate color or finish.
Of course. However, the dog has no say in who they work for - the point is to elevate our ability to lead clearly and effectively.
Very good. Also, I've been told that you can't let the dog win too many times because otherwise they can become possessive of it. I don't know if that's true though
It's not true. If you take things from the dog all the time when the dog is enjoying it, without returning it, then it may become possessive.
Good Drop training also is a must. What a good doggo
My dog is lazy, wont play tug very long, wont play fetch, doesnt do very much at all. Shes a staffordshire, and getting over weight.
Not every dog has a high level of drive to play. If she’s getting heavy just pull back in food a little. My last bulldog was not the biggest player and that worked well for her and what I recommend to clients.
Great looking doggo 😊
Thx!
I have a rescue who is terrified of tools like nail clippers and stethoscope at the vet. Any tips to get them used to thrse
I’ve got a video coming out on shaping behaviour. It will touch on some concepts that if applied for your needs can be very effective.
Qué hermoso lugar, de qué país eres?
Canada 🇨🇦
Do you have a video on how to have a border collie to focus on you ??
Not specifically.
wow
🙏
You give me hope, thank you. I plan to watch all you have here because your way of being with the dogs is beautiful. Sincere thanks. We are on the right track and there is hope for calm existence. Our new doggy guy is an adult, with us 4 weeks and there is so much to learn but you describe in this and other videos exactly the things we are doing and he is thinking .. thank you.
I’m glad you found the videos helpful - that is the whole purpose in making them. To help empower dog owners to be better informed!
The item in my hand is a monopod for the camera - an insta 360. The camera is designed to crop out the monopod but I also have a small tripod attached which is what is visible. You’ll see in the clips where the camera/tripod is placed on the ground away from us - motorcycle clip (07:07) there is nothing in my hands at that point because the camera/tripod setup is on the ground. The dog was trained solely on a flat collar and leash.
Big deal. All this clown did was use a shock collar. His hand carrying it is concealed. Dog abuse
Great video 👌 my dog barks at people we are meeting, any advice? And where are you located? Thank you
It really depends why your dog is barking. Dogs get excited for a variety of reasons. Sometimes happy excitement, sometimes fear or stress and in some instances aggression. It indicates a high emotional state and depending on the dog, history and context how to deal with it will vary. There is no “one size fits all” approach or answer to behavioural issues unfortunately.
@@Mtldogtrainerfamilyk9it’s refreshing to see another trainer say this.
Is he an olde English bulldogge or a boxer?
He's an English Bulldog
He is eating way too fast , please get him a busy bowl , it slows down how fast they eat , makes them think too . Love how well trained he is though. Good Job!
Psyhopate
Most dogs will happily give you a gallon of drool in return! 🤣
I love people when they show what they achieve. But ,,,,,, where is the point if u made videos, without show , how?
Love him to bits. That face!.😅
Oh yeah. I still love my dentist, now his son who followed in Dad's footsteps as a dentist. Couldn't wait to get our prize after our visit. So great! Even went on a white water rafting trip for a mother/father/kid event. We still talk about it.
“Lets check it out” was my phrase i used when my pup was scared. To this day my boy will look at me when scared seeing if “we should check it out”.
And his quality of life benefitted from your guidance to explore and take chances rather than look to avoid or seek comfort. Well done.
WhT do you have in your hand
The leash is in one hand and I’ve got a 360 camera in the other which eliminates out the monopod It is attached to except for the end, which is the part in my hand you’re seeing. You can find out more at insta360.com
Thank you for this. I have a new rescue thats avoiding coming in the dining room because of the lampshade hanging in the middle of the room, so i went and stroked it and showed him that its ok. If you have a tip on how to get him excited for a walk because atm hes avoiding going from the front room to the front door. Once hes at the front door hes fine, but getting him to the front door is a challenge as he just lays down and doesnt want to go. So we almost have to pick him up to get him to the front door, but hes big so this isnt sustainable. Any tips on how we can rememdy this would be greatly appreciated. Apart from this hes really good at everything else in life and is doing so well. ❤
Without knowing the dog or watching the scenario directly, it’s impossible for me to speak with any real specificity. Some ideas you can try are finding whatever your dog’s “reason to live is “and then show the dog that this will be delivered to him as soon as he crosses the threshold of the door. Think of not wanting to get on an airplane if you had a fear of flying and then imagine if every time you stepped on a plane, someone would hand you a certified check for half $1 million. The other aspect which is directly tied to this is the drama that leads up to Getting him to the door. We want to minimize the fuss about getting to the door, both in terms of his emotional state as well as the amount of time it takes us to get to the door because the longer it takes the more he gets stuck in quicksand. Go about playing with him in the house and feeding him treats in the house and have him follow you around on a leash for short periods of time in all directions not solely towards the door. Once you have his trust and cooperation, then periodically make the direction be towards the door. Think in terms of “pressure release” in other words don’t simply apply pressure to the dog (mentally and emotionally) give the dog a lot of easy wins. Let him follow you and make a game of it in every easy direction much more so than towards the door so that the odd time towards the door can be absorbed inside of your practice session very easily. Glad you found the video helpful best of luck with your dog!
He was vaccinated.
What a good boy
Love my dog! He always works his heart out and is a sweetheart.
Ya but how did you do that?
Nobody comment it yet
Just found this-I appreciate and agree with your kind and respectful training methods. It's a joy to work with a dog like Mia-she reminds me of my 10 month old GSD pup who is endlessly happy to work for a tug or toss of her favorite floppy frisbee. It's wonderful to hear a UA-cam dog trainer speak knowledgeably about the intelligence and special personalities of the dogs they work with. Thank You!!
I’m so glad you found it useful. Dogs need to achieve satisfaction and require someone who understands how their instincts and minds work in order to have training make sense. When we make the training work and “fit” the dog we are simply making our jobs easier in the process and the training has much more longevity and durability. Best of luck with your dog!
❤❤❤❤
Hooligan says thanks!
Would have been nice to see how he got the dog to focus on him
Nick thank you so much for this video, it’s been very informative. I’m in TX fostering a dog that was captured after being loss for about six months after being dumped with 3 other dogs. We have had this adult male dog for a month. He has not shown any aggression at all but totally avoids us. He basically lives in our living room and does not come into rooms where we are except to walk through to go outside when we open the door and if he wants to go out. When he wants to come in, and he would rather be in, we cannot be anywhere need the door. He freaks out if he sees a leash. I’m frustrated because I want to help him to have normal life.
I’m glad you found it useful. Dogs like the one you are fostering need to be challenged in a very careful and structured and measured way in order to help raise their tolerance to stress. If this is done properly, it will help create a stronger dog with a larger comfort zone and give them a better quality of life. Best of luck with your Foster Dog - what a wonderful thing to do for an animal in need :-)
That dog has the biggest asshole I've ever seen
"promo sm" ☝️
I had a member of the city's shelter once tell me that a dog I had adopted would be back in a week. My response was "challenge accepted." That was thirteen years ago. Keely's still here. She's getting old and she's slowly going blind. But she's still here. Right now, she's asleep in her bed next to my mothers bed. But she's still here. Why?. Because while Keely was VERY hard to train. We were able to get through to her and reassure her that it was okay to be herself. But she had some really BAD PTSD stuff that never truly cleared. She still has issues, even after all this time.
They shouldn't be running a shelter if they don't understand dogs. It's very rare to have a dog with serious aggression or mental issues that can't be fixed. Breaks my heart to think about all of the "bad behaved" dogs that will never have a chance because of that sort of thing.
Amen!
Lotsa shelters have volunteers who know little about dogs, and much less training them, but their ❤ is in the right place. They do give a s**t, and probably don’t have the need or the time to spew criticism on youtube.
That is dangerous shelter staff behavior
Hi great content. Do you have online content about high leash reactivity cases? Thanks
Thanks, glad you like it. Definitely have a look through the older videos. There’s a bunch of videos on training, reactive, dogs of all types, and all issues ranging from dog reactivity to car, chasing and much more.
The light in his eyes when he looks at you is amazing he’s so happy you can tell
So glad they’re banned where I live
Lol What was the point of this video?
I've never been to a dog park. I've often wondered exactly what happens in them. I'm glad you easily explained the dog park for me. Having an old boy and a Neo that plays hard i will never bring them to a dog park sounds like all I'd have is issues
Glad it was helpful!
