I emphatically agree w/everything you suggested except the side dump headers. For me, too ugly, too noisy, and too fumey. I totally get your rationale though. I solved all my AMC V8 issues (including the guaranteed to leak rear main seal, and pathetic V-belt (lack of) tensioning system), by swapping it for a 4.0L w/multiport fuel injection.

I'm going to be critical of these 5 things. I only own one Jeep at the moment, a FSJ. It is my 19th one. I have owned a couple CJ's as well. ALL with the third generation AMC V8, the oldest a 1971 and the newest a 1989. Each of the five modifications are a choice that one can make and start down the path of making your Jeep a Chevy. A big part of what makes a Jeep a Jeep is that it's different in ways that create and reinforce it's unique characteristics. By all means do what you want with your rig, but the Chevy mods just make if more Chevy and less Jeep. Now if those mods were Buick sourced mods than maybe the Jeep could still be Jeep. A Buick HEI distributor, a Buick 60A alternator, a Buick Q-jet, and then that electric fuel pump in addition to a factory mechanical pump, and an aluminum intake that accepts the q-jet without an adapter. The q-jet is missing so many pieces that it would barely run in a cold environment. Completely removing the choke except of the electric housing is just asking of a reliability problem some cold morning. When are you going to change out that Ford/AMC starter for something different? A Chevy perhaps??

if you replace the front timing cover and oil pump with regulator, do not run your oil pressure at 70 psi like modern engines make sure your oil pressure is not more than 45 psi or else you will be stripping timing gears quickly, if you replace the oil pressure regulator spring, with a new spring you will have to cut two rings off the string to make the oil pressure 45 psi. this is the biggest mistake made when rebuilding the AMC V8.

A couple of things regarding the intake manifold. You may pay more than $100-150. I couldn’t find one for less than $275 a couple of months back. Also, there are 2 manifold styles. One for the 67-69 cylinder heads and one for the 1970+ cylinder heads.

Might I make a humble suggestion? When replacing a disturbator, install a new distributor drive gear on the front of the camshaft. Older and wiser folks may know if switching the gear from your old distributor to the new one might work. But new distrubitor gear on old cam gear will result in cold wet walk home.

This is an awesome video, I was almost regretting just purchasing my 74 until I seen this. MY current dilema is that I have 33" tires on it though and I think the lift was done poorly. Way too long of front shackles are being used so it would be great to know what springs... you are runing with your 33" tires. I only see 4" kits for 76 and above, they're are known that I know of for this era Jeep. What is that? Thanks though and great video!

    • @junkyardjeep744

ya long front shackles will destroy you're drivability if u don't re angle the front diff, mine just had 2 inch lift springs and stock shackles

Super - that's what I am trying to understand - "how much to lift it for 33". I was or am considering an EMU YJ conversion but not sure. Good to know you have sufficient clearance with your setup. I am not looking to rock crawl... - just DNR trails in MI and OH mostly, which are mostly pretty mild.

Cool video. Seems no single year is the perfect Jeep. I own a '77 CJ 5. 258, t-18 wide ratio, 4.10 gears, power steering, Dana 30 with discs, Dana 20 t case, AMC 20 with Moser 1 piece axles. Not a bad set up, basically factory except the Mosers. But to make it closer to my idea of a better CJ I have a narrow track Dana 44, a Tera 3.15 gear set for the Dana 20 and an Advance Adapters output shaft upgrade for the t case also. Of course its got a winch, modest lift, full cage and other bits. But you know what happens. You make the upgrades you have and then youll see a whole new set of things that could be improved. Limited slips need to be true lockers, 33s need to be 35s, how difficult can it be to cut a tailgate into this thing? It never ends. Just Empty Every Pocket.

Be careful with the cheap Chinese HEI distributors they are junk. The gears are bad and they can ruin your cam gear. Run the motocraft distributor with a cap adapter and larger ford style cap and rotor. Trigger it with a 4 terminal GM HEI module. Mounted in a gutted duraspark case or a heat sink GM#10474610 with some heat sink paste. MSD CDI is better if you have the money. Look up Jeephammer or Junkyard Genius for more information 👍🏻 Keep doing the CJ videos

My current Jeep is an '83 CJ5. I'm partial to the early 80s CJ5s, although I've owned a 1970 CJ5. My '83 has a (I think) factory steering box brace that clamps around it, and extends to the passenger side front spring mount and connects to the frame there. One of the five CJ5s I've owned was a 1980, and it had manual steering, manual brakes, Iron Duke 4-cyl. engine, and pathetic SR4 transmission. It was still fun to drive, but I prefer having the power steering, and brakes. The skidplate ecosystem and goats from different planets comments were funny. I noticed you were missing a lugnut on the front driver's side wheel.

It is my holy grail car since it was my first Datsun.. Consider saving one for me, if you can find one in your area. I cant seem to find any in southern FL. If it was not for that humble nimble little car I probably would not be here to tell the story of my life. I am so grateful to Datsun for the high quality almost indestructible cars they built. They can be revived easily...... as long as the engine is intact. Cast iron block.

That alternator is the worst GM alternator ever made! The diodes used in that hunk of garbage are the smallest ever used in a Chevy. Use an older GM version, which Carrie’s a universal rebuild part number of 7122. It has the largest diodes ever used and will last much longer. The only down side is that you have to be smart enough to wire in a separate voltages regulator, but that’s fine. It won’t overcharge your battery like the internally regulated alternator will. As for the HEI ignition, buy a modern one and use the best quality cap and rotor you can find. Early distributors had a bushing in them that ate itself up, and the bronze material would coat thee inside of the distributor causing misfires. The Quadrajet? Great carb, but hard to tune. Get Doug Roes book on Q-jets and modify your carb accordingly!

Very hard if not impossible to find parts. Its a battle. 72 to 75 being the intermediates. My jeep is just like any other jeep when it comes to how much money you will put in... but its just more difficult and unfortunately less desired. If anyone is getting into a CJ id say anything 76 to 86 (correct me if im wrong). If anyone knows which parts are interchangeable please reach out to me. Thanks.
