**Exposing the Falsehood of Prosperity Preachers: A Biblical Examination** The rise of prosperity preachers has led many Christians into a dangerous misconception about wealth, giving, and blessings from God. These preachers often use manipulative interpretations of Scripture to demand money from their followers, promising wealth and success in return. However, a deeper look into the Bible reveals that their teachings are far from the truth. Let's examine some of these falsehoods, using Scripture to expose the lies being told, and present a more biblically sound approach to giving, wealth, and faith. Abraham Didn't Leave Isaac on the Altar Many prosperity preachers suggest that just as Abraham was willing to "sacrifice" Isaac, Christians must sacrifice their "Isaac," often interpreted as money, by giving it to them. This is a complete misrepresentation of the story of Abraham's test of faith. Genesis 22:12 shows us that God did not require Abraham to actually sacrifice Isaac: _"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."_ God didn’t want Abraham’s physical wealth or possessions. This test was about faith and obedience, not money. Christians today should not be deceived into thinking that their money (or "Isaac") needs to be left at the altar of a prosperity preacher to prove their faith. Abraham didn’t leave Isaac on the altar, and Christians shouldn’t leave their finances in the hands of manipulative preachers. First Fruits Is Not Money Many prosperity preachers twist the concept of "first fruits" into an opportunity to demand large sums of money from believers at the beginning of the year. However, the biblical concept of first fruits has nothing to do with money in this context, and more importantly, "Jesus" is our first fruit. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 clarifies this: _"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep... For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."_ Jesus is the firstfruit of resurrection, meaning He is the forerunner for all believers who will follow in His path. Prosperity preachers who demand money as "first fruits" are misapplying Scripture. Our first fruit offering has already been made in Christ, and no further financial transaction is required. "Tithing Scams: The New Testament Teaches Voluntary Giving" The prosperity gospel often teaches that tithing (giving 10% of one's income) is mandatory and that God will only bless those who faithfully tithe. This teaching is false and rooted in a misunderstanding of the New Testament's teaching on giving. In the Old Testament, tithing was part of the Mosaic Law, specifically for the Israelites, and was given to support the Levites (Numbers 18:21). However, in the New Covenant, believers are no longer bound by the tithe system. The New Testament teaches "voluntary" giving based on one's ability and willingness. 2 Corinthians 9:7 emphasizes this: _"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."_ Notice the contrast: there is no fixed percentage, no compulsion, and no promise of personal financial gain. The goal of giving is to support others and honor God, not to manipulate God into giving us wealth in return. Giving to Gain Wealth? A Deceptive Practice. The claim that giving will lead to personal wealth is a dangerous lie. While God blesses generosity, there is no biblical promise that giving to a preacher will make one rich. In fact, the Bible warns against the love of money and the pursuit of wealth. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 warns: _"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."_ Many prosperity preachers urge their followers to give in expectation of receiving wealth in return, but this only enriches the preachers while impoverishing their followers. The math behind this is simple: A Practical Example: The Reality of Prosperity Preaching Let’s break it down with an example: A pastor like Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners’ Chapel or Matthew Ashimolowo of KICC has a congregation of 100,000 people. Each member is encouraged to tithe 10% of their income, which for simplicity, let’s assume is an average of $1,000 per month. This means each person gives $100 in tithes. - 100,000 people giving $100 each = $10,000,000 per month. Now imagine that all of this money goes to the pastor’s organization. Even if only a fraction is used for the pastor’s personal benefit, that individual is accumulating a significant amount of wealth-far more than any of the individual givers. The congregation, meanwhile, continues to give faithfully, but their overall wealth decreases because they are losing 10% of their income monthly, while the pastor’s wealth exponentially increases. This is why these preachers can afford luxury cars, private jets, and multi-million dollar homes. The followers who are giving to "sow seeds" of wealth into their lives end up with less, while the pastor's wealth multiplies. This is not biblical; it's exploitation. God Doesn't Spend Money God doesn’t need or use money. The wealth collected by prosperity preachers isn’t being given to God-it’s being used to fund their luxurious lifestyles. The Bible teaches that God cares about our hearts and obedience, not our material wealth. Psalm 50:10-12 states: _"For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills... If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it."_ God doesn’t need our money, and we cannot bribe or buy His blessings. Instead, God calls us to give generously and joyfully out of love and concern for others, not with the expectation of material gain. Conclusion: Be Wise and Discerning Prosperity preachers have twisted Scripture to create a false narrative of wealth and success tied to giving. But the Bible teaches that giving should be voluntary, motivated by love, and without the expectation of personal financial reward. Jesus is our first fruit, and we are called to be faithful stewards of what God has given us, not manipulated into funding the luxurious lifestyles of a select few. As Christians, we must be discerning and test all teachings against Scripture, guarding against false doctrines that promise worldly wealth in exchange for financial contributions.
