A weakness of drug development and manufacturing is that testing the quality of their medicinal batches requires manual sampling and time-consuming tests on a complex and fragile instrument called a mass spectrometer.

This testing process takes anywhere from four hours to days. However, bad broth from contaminants can develop in as little as an hour. At this point, significant filtering and purification of the drug are required before making pills or syringe solutions.
