This channel is dedicated to revealing lost treasures in gaming, literature, and visual media like movies and comics. It is inspired by the Joubert quote, “The worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.” I want to give you a platform to discuss older works, explore things you may never have heard of, and engage with the greats of these genres.

Hello Happy UA-camrs!!! I hope your day is going amazingly well! I just finished rereading the H.P. Lovecraft longer novella ghostwritten for Zealia Bishop called “The Mound” that was not published in his lifetime and introduces his take on Clark Ashton Smith’s Tsathoggua and brings it into the Mythos. An unabridged version wasn’t published until 1989. Enjoy!!! Here it is for free: en.wikisourc...

Awesome video! Played all of these apart from blaster master, most on computer emulation, apart from a few on my first console (which I didn’t know at the time-I was a little kid-was and NES emulator!). I’d say my number one would be Star force, a little bit because it was the first video game I ever played (outside of arcade stuff) but I still think it’s design is great though very minimalist, and I love the graphics! Thanks for the video Abe!
WTF was that ? LOL
The concept is good, but the book is not nearly as good as I expected. It’s written in a weird way. It doesn’t seem relatable or real. I don’t want to say that’s it’s bad writing, but it’s not convincing - especially the conversation Quail has with the agents when he’s disarming them. And the mice story at the end? Kinda lost me. I will have to read Do Androids soon.
Sure thing, thanks for the thoughts, good ones too.
I knew him through his daughter, Vicky. He was creepy. Vicky and I went to a couple of proms in High School. She played Dorothy in our "Wizard of Oz". The family lived in Havertown, Pa. Vicky said: "My dad writes westerns." I lived in Drexel Hill near Lloyd Alexander. Lloyd wrote fantasy. He was cool. He had gigantic cats and a lovely wife. Good times at Lloyd's house.
Thanks for that!
Mons Fractus is Latin for Brokeback Mountain.
Thank you for the info
I watched the episode of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery written by Serling based on Lovecraft’s story which I then read. If you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it. It does change the story into a love story and it is character driven but it makes you feel more for Dr. Munoz.
Awesome, thanks!
That was grrrreat, Abe! I've seen only the two final Harry Potter films, and I really wanted to see "The Green Knight". Tolkien wrote an interpretation of the original Green Knight poem, and I love that one. I wonder, have you ever written any poetry or fiction? It would be fun to hear you read some, if you have! Take care!1
Hello! Thanks for your kind thoughts, I've written some unpublished shorts and then an epic fantasy novel that's also unpublished.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006wow! Have you ever considered publishing them? Or self-publishing? I love epic fantasy, I’m so curious now!
I think that, at a certain point, an author making tons of references to mythos beings is less storytelling than it is recitation and list-making. The cataloging of things that have been added to a mythos is less creativity than it is memory, and I wonder if that was a lot of the problem with this story?
And many Gen 2 and 3 stuff. I hear you.
Pre watch...I'm guessing the #1 spot is Grasshopper
Agree completely with the Javelin, but not at #1. It's not iconic enough. Need some star power. #1 for me in 3025 has to be Warhammer. Then Battlemaster, then Awesome! #PPCRoxx
Nope, sorry. It's great, I loved it in Battle tech the video game more than I expected, but sorry. But it is a jumping mech...
Pathfinder or the Inland Sea by Femimore Cooper. Then you for reminding me. I love it
Sure thing!!!
It started okay, but it really derailed for me when: 1. I learned that the claws was meant to kill everything witb a heat signal. That is a very dumb weapon design. It is almost like you are trying to create the end of humanity. 2. I could see Tasso being Second Variety from a mile away, bug the protagonist couldn't. He would be more helpfull if he had kept his mouth shut. Very frustrating
Sure thing, thanks for your thoughts.
1E Locust 7F Jenner 1 Whitworth 1K Phoenix Hawk 1L Vindicator 5M Wolverine 1A Catapult Grasshopper 8Q Awesome 7D Atlas Not in order besides weight , I could hear arguments for other mechs like the Spider
Hello, thanks for that!!!
Banshee 3s
Great list, great channel, I am subscribing! keep up the good content and positivity.
Sure thing Matt and welcome!!!
Awesome stuff Abe! Definitely agree with your rating, and as always thank you for the videos!
Yup yup!!!!!
I thought Crispin Glover did a phenomenal job as Grendel; I also loved the John Gardner novel (before it became popular). The problem with Beowulf: he's so one-dimensional. But I think they did an admirable job with it. I think it's cool that you mention it. I always love your lists, Abe. They're always carefully thought out. You're a tough but fair critic (and connoisseur).God bless.
Thanks! For those Top Ten lists I make them a few days early, and then sit on them and come back a few days later. Same thing with my Top Then Gen One Cthulhu Mythos stories or my stuff in D&.D, or tomorrow's BattleTech stuff.
Hi. Thanks. I haven't watched Edge Of Destruction for ages. I do remember enjoying it though. Much like a play as you say. It's strange and has lots of atmosphere. You suggest that this story and the way it's presented might have been influencial on the style of the show throughout the classic period. Just as or more influential than the Daleks... I hadn't thought of that. Thankyou. I agree. I'm going to did out my copy and rewatch. Regards, Ian.
Hello sure thing! Enjoy the rewatch!
Great list. Got fond memories of early roguelikes I played all those years ago. Alphaman was a fun, quirky one but probably unplayably bad today. Also a big fan of ADOM, Omega, Hack, and Nethack. I was just looking for something to play on those computer terminals at university - no graphics, colour, or sound. Some of the big roguelikes today, like CDDA, Caves of Qud, and Cogmind are a bit daunting to get into. Prefer the smaller ones.
Glad you liked my list and thanks for sharing yours!!!
I once took a cruise ship from NYC to the island of of Bermuda for an observation session under truly dark skies. Issac Asimov was with us and gave a talk both on the ship and at the observing site at Bermuda. A line formed to look through the telescope...one of the first items viewed was Saturn. I was first in line, but Asimov's pushy wife pushed herself in front of me.....she looked and then astonishingly proclaimed, "Why, it's got a ring around it!" Yeah, lady...a well known fact ever since a telescope was first pointed at it way back in the 1600's! BHE
Thanks for sharing that fun anecdote!
Hi, Abe! Thank youuu! This was a great review! I agree with you about how important this was for the characters! This bottle episode allowed the writers to focus on the major players and let their interplay really give the audience a sense of who they were. While the introduction of the Daleks allowed the show to gain a big fan base, this was the breakthrough (along with small flashes of character sensibilities in eps like "The Aztecs") that let the writers see that they would be able to work within the format to allow for mild, but not overwhelming, characteristics to shine! I think contemporary "Who" since 2005 has focused too much on the "companion" and emotion, rather than the weekly plot. It's partially because the producers lobbied for and got the one-hour format rather than the cliff-hanger half-hour, so they often seemed compelled to finish a plot in an hour and then, to mimic the cliffhanger motif of the golden age of Who, they focused on "what's the mystery of the companion" and had that float over many more separate stories. Each of those separate stories really was thin on plot for its own sake, and often was silly, not at all the way Phillip Hinchcliffe worked on the tales with Terrance Dicks and folks like Robert Holmes, or the way Dicks, Barry Letts and others worked on the stories during Pertwee's era. Thank you, again! You made a great day even better! Love ya, man!
Sure thing!!! Glad you enjoy it...
Love the idea, but you may tap into nostalgia more by showing the module's themselves and just focus on narration along with your thoughts as to why the modules rank where they do, especially if you ran/played them when they first came out. Keep rocking!
Hello and happy day to you!!! Thanks fr your thoughts! I often do mention briefly where i ran them like "zthe Day of Al'Akbar", or "The Hidden Shrine of Tomoachan" in my Isle of Dread campaign or but adding in images for free takes a lot of time and since i am not reviewing them but just a fast Top Ten that amount of extra time for a project that's not monetized is rough, but i hear you. Good thoughts though, if i had the time or staff or was getting money from this? Absolutely!
Great video! Definitely disagree with hellboy 2, I remember being utterly bored and disappointed with it, and tbh not much of a fan of HP or Narnia (I’m reading the books but haven’t watched any Narnia movies, I do have some fond memories of the old tv series though!). In my top 10 I would have definitely included Solomon Kane, maybe 300? There were some really good miniseries at that time as well, it was a really rich decade for fantasy!
Absolutely thanks for your thoughts!!!
I have that in my "want" list on Thriftbooks!! Can't wait to hear what you think! :)
Sure thing!!!
I haven’t read this but I’ll read along! Love DMR, their Swain the Viking reprints (especially first 3 volumes) are absolutely amazing, best viking fiction EVER! Their Edmond Hamilton, Tanith Lee etc collection are great too, the “Eye of Sounnu” collection by Schuyler Hernstrom is a modern classic! Also really liked “a million years in the future” (something like E R Burroughs style space opera), and “Karnov” (weird S&S round robin anthology). The only story I’ve read in this collection is the CAS one (classic!), this is going to be fun! Never even read “House of Arabu” I thought it was some kind of detective story and (sorry folks) almost every one I read of them stink… Thanks for the video Abe! Hope you have a great day!
Sure thing and let me know your thougths sa i publish them!!!
I _have_ read it but this is another one I don’t remember! Hmm will definitely have to revisit this! Thank you for making videos Abe as always!
Sure thing and two videos left!
This collection looks rock solid! Looking forward to this
Yeah i was in a fantasy/Sword and Sorcery mode after two collections of Tierney and CAS's Tsathaggua Cycle.
Thank you, Abe! For some reason, this makes me want to reread the novel, "Necropolis," by Basil Copper. He picked up the Solar Pons tales after August Derleth passed away. I wonder if you've ever read any of Copper's work? - Take care, man!
That's fun. I haven't raed anything by Copper other thn two Cthulhu Mythos shorts.
Enjoying your reviews, especially the Moorcock works. Thank you! 👍🏼
Sure thing and thanks for lettingme know!!!
I loved this story when I first discovered it a few years ago.
Thanks for sharing, and I just finished the Cthulhu Mythos Tsattaghaoga Cycle collection with thi s in it too.
Awesome video! Got some real nostalgia at the beginning (though I’m the playstation/game boy colour generation, but I used to play MAME, etc., and the first 2-3 consoles i had were those cheap NES emulators) it’s really cool you’ve played all these consoles, have you thought about doing a video like an overview or ranking them? Never played any of these simulation games myself (tycoon, the one with the airport, etc.) but I did watch a friend play them for hours (He had a pc I didn’t 😂), always liked the graphics but tbh I think I would get bored playing them! Thank you for the video Abe!
Sure thing!
I've heard of that game! Always wondered what that was about! Thanks, Abe!
Yup yup!!
Yuppers puppers thanks to you Abe as well!
Sure thing!!!!!
One of the best space opera book series ever, especially for younger readers.
Harry Harrison had a devoted fan base too.
I think Im going to get this antho! Thanks, Abe!! Best to you, from NH!
You got it!!!
Great overview! I was only familiar with the rpg and have a couple of novels (haven’t gotten to them yet though 😅), it actually sounds more strategic than other wargames! As always thanks for the video you rock!
Sure thing!!!
I like the stories that combine sword and sorcery with hints of the Cthulhu mythos! Thank you, Abe!
Sure thing!!!
You are right about serials, it seems like such a missed opportunity! E.g. what if there was a Star Wars serial and an Indiana Jones every Saturday or something (and they were actually good😂) there’s no way that wouldn’t have worked!
Yup! And modern tv shows are very serialized now.
Awesome! Definitely have to reread this I don’t remember this one at all! Thank you for making videos Abe!
You got it!!!
I remember visiting the US in 1989 and being in Baltimore where my sister was doing her post-doc I was shocked that Maryland PBS running fundraisers to keep their lights on and they were auctioning Dr Who serials. I feel so privileged to have been born and growing up in Britain and being encouraged and enjoying Dr Who.
Thanks for sharing that fun story!!!
Oh just wanted to say really appreciate you keep things spoiler-free, even with the older stuff!
Sure thing!!!
Never watched dr Who, is there a good place to start? Could you start watching with this serial?
The classic series is streaming on Britbox. The older 60s black and white are done fast often filmed in a day each, and there are like 48 episodes a season so ton of them. They are pretty slow to modern minds, people are running into sets, and such, like theater, but there is a warmness and charm that's lost to our age of storytelling today. Each doctor has their own interpretation of the character, many fans love the 2nd and 4th. ou could start with the previous one an Unearthly Child or this for historical context, or move to the color era of Spearhead in Space that introduces the 3rd Doctor. Many episodes from this era are missing sadly.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006thanks for the response! I’ll start with the unearthly child and then this I think, yeah isn’t it awful how many stuff gets lost?
@@konstantinos-6-6-6-8 Absolutely!
Love the new set-up Abe. Looks great. Very professional. How would you feel about splicing in still images occasionally to illustrate your commentary?
Thanks! That's my new room prior to moving things in. I could do that, and once my channel starts monetizing, that's possible.
Excellent coverage, good man!! Those early stories were great experiments and showed how hard they worked to keep Doctor Who running! Rock on!
You got it!
Wow the only serial I’ve seen was the first Flash Gordon, I guess I knew there would be more but never really thought to look up and see what else there was, will check it out and thanks for the link!
Sure thing!!!
Great review! Love that you focused on the actual rules, you’d think more people would do that when reviewing rpgs… I’ve only looked at MERP here and there, the artwork was great, I can see the issue with the rules not reflecting the world! TBH hard to imagine a Middle Earth RPG that would work, it just doesn’t quite feel like that kind of world… unless maybe it took place around Silmarillion, that age…?
Yup yup! Thanks for your thoughts!!!
This collection does sound interesting but I haven’t read much Shakespeare, always feel with that kind of concept if I don’t know the background I’ll miss too much…
I've only read one play each year in high School (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Hamlet ) for classes and The Tempest in college for a Humanities class. I also just reread Tempest, Macbeth and read a Midsummer Night's and reviewed them here for this channel as a fantasy adn horror fan.
Love your videos Abe! I’d say it’s definitely in the Cthulhu mythos, it’s more explicit in some stories than others but definitely mythos! This was a great story indeed!
Yup.
That’s a great list! The whole time I was wondering if you would include “Hook”, that’s the one that popped in my mind straight away though I haven’t seen it in decades! I would only disagree with blade, I think it feels more like horror/action, not fantasy, but great movie! The only one I would add would be Roald Dahl’s Witches, that was a fun movie with some really creepy scenes! Also Robin Hood: men in tights, love that movie but it’s more of a parody…
Hello and thanks! I haven't seen the Witches film, so no context there. Sorry about Blade, did you agree about The Nightmare Before Christmas, also a gothic horror.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006I’d say yeah? I think maybe because it’s animation and more fairytale-like it feels more like fantasy! You should definitely check out the witches movie, it’s something!
I don’t remember this story at all! You’ll make me reread this and I have a million books to read😂 Have you read Richard Tierney’s Simon magus novel, “drums of chaos” ? I thought it was quite interesting, somehow pulpier than the short stories! And thank you for the video, hope you have an amazing day as well!
Sure thing! This collection is the only thing I've read by him thus far.
Read Hiero's Journey in the 70s and Unforsaken Hiero in the 80s. They were magnificent. The sequel leaves you hanging. I heard, I don't remember where that he had the next in the series outlined in his mind, but then had a stroke or something and couldn't write the final book. A great tragedy. The stories are right up there with something Tolkien, Jordan, or Sanderson would write.
Yup yup!!!!!!
